View Full Version : Number plate size question (again...sorry)
apologies for what is presumably an often posed question but.....
What illegal size(!) plate will I get away with without taking the p1ss/ drawing attention from the Met?
cheers
standard is 9x7.
anything smaller is illegal and you may get fined
although most seem to get away with 7x5
i have a 6x4

I believe 1 line plates are illegal on a motorbike but I might not be correct, but anything on one line is going to get a pull from police IMHO.
I've got a 7 x 5 on my bike and never had a problem with it, Liz has 7 x 5's on her SV and Duke and its never been a problem for her either, personally I wouldnt go any smaller than that though.

yes............. but, after seeing you in the shower, i feel a bit better

The law does not specify what size the plate is.
It actually specifies what size and font the characters should be, the space between the characters, space between the lines and the size of the border around the characters.
The characters on a motorbike should be 64mm high and 44mm wide. There should be 10mm between characters and also an 11mm border around the entire plate.
The plate must be on two lines.
So the size of your plate depends on the number of characters on the plate.
This information is taken from the DVLA.
Hope this clears things up.

I went to Wales (with some trepidation) at the weekend with a 7x5 plate and am pleased to say i survived without gettin pulled by the Rozzers. However, others have been earlier this year (Quiff, Mister C if I remember correctly for example) and been done for plates of a similar size. The moral of the story, you pays your money, you makes your choice and if you get pulled, you get pulled, if you don't then you don't :D

I think there is some ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) advice around somewhere that if the number plate can be read easily at the appropriate distance (about 20m) then it should be a warning only....however this is only advice and as some have found out to their cost (see post on Notting Hill carnival) if it doesn't comply with the regs you can be given a ticket.
from the Met?
cheers
I know bikers who ride around London without a number plate - if they get pulled they just look astonshised & say it must have just fallen off, but they don't get pulled.
I also know someone who got pulled within 2 days of putting a Silver on Black (9x7) plate on their Triumph Bonny.
Who knows what the randomness is for whether you get pulled? :smt102
Touch wood I've been Ok with a lot of miles & a few Police stops with my 7x5. I wouldn't go for a 6x4 & I wouldn't go for a one liner though.
At the end of the day you want to enjoy your bike & if you are going to worry about it, an 8x6 is a nice bit smaller than standard and 'should' be OK with almost any Policeman.
First offence should be £30 no points, but too many of them & the DVLA can take your number away from you (I guess this would be hassle & some cost if you have a normal reg & outright loss if you have a Private reg)

All the above is correct.
ANPR can only read the correct font, so called state of the art software.

I usually go with the 8x6 just a little bit smaller and neater but I tend to have a coloured boarder on it and a slogan on the bottom. Just bought one today for bout £15 with lock, stock and two smoking boll ocks on the bottom of it :D

Not very well at foreign plates though, it need visual confirmation from a photograph. I got a high ranking traffic cop next door to me at home that can state all the flaws in ANPR and the font reading is one of them.

In my experience high ranking Traffic cops know very little about the actual workings of anything....You would be better off talking to someone who actually works with the equipment on a daily basis.

The bike came with a slightly smaller one. It didnt take the **** but I thought I cant risk any hastle as I do a fair bit of milage. Put the standard one back on and tbh it doesnt look any different.
IMO stick to standard size...

www.myshowplates.com (http://www.myshowplates.com) make very good plates and they come next day, you make it up online with borders and flags, backgrounds etc. They do all the sizes and and 8x6 too which is a slight reduction.

He does... He instructs, he audits, and he still works in the field.
www.vaultgraffix.co.uk (http://www.vaultgraffix.co.uk) make great plates, and at a great price too! and if what you're after isnt available online, just ask me and i'm sure i can do it!
