View Full Version : Why do we ride our bikes?

Found this while reading a business managment book :help:

Its a statement of the finding of a Polish psychologist on what makes people feel good

"The types of activity which people all over the world consistently report as most rewarding - that is, which make them feel best - involve a clear objective, a need for concentration so intense that no attention is left over, a lack of interruptions and distractions, clear and immediate feedback on progress towards the objective, and a sense of challenge - the sense that ones skills are adequate, but only adequate, to cope with the task in hand."

Pretty much coves it all for me

Because it's cheaper, more fun and quicker than driving a Renault Espace to work on the M58, M6, M62, M602 and Manchester's city centre roads!

Oh and because I can!

Because we would look silly just pushing them around

I ride my bike because: I dont like using public transport (too costly, too slow) and because I dont have a car or car lisence. If the journey isnt that long, I'll walk.

I also like to ride to take my mind off things, to ride just for ridings sake (its quite technical, dont you all think? I like that, technical stuff, things you have to analyse and think about in order to get better, fun) and also, I love to ride with my dad.

Oh, and now, I really really love riding with 100 or so other people from the best biking community in the world. SV650.org's Annual Rideouts!

Some spend more time cleaning and polishing than riding. What does that make them?

I would pretty much say it is an escape from everything. Nothing else matters when youre on the bike.

I ride my bike because:
It goes fast(ish).
It's loud(ish).

I like the way that when I get on a bike, I could be anyone. It's almost like adopting a new persona. Who's behind the black visor? Could be anyone from another persons perspective. I like that about bikes (or more accurately bike clothing but you get the link).

Since I was 3 I loved bikes and was fascinated by how cool the riders looked, to be in control of a machine that takes skill, courage and bravery sometimes to ride and ride well. I guess that's part of the appeal for me. Although I never felt all that cool on my old GS125! :D

It also feels nice to be part of a group. Bikers seem to stick together (although some threads here would suggest otherwise). I like feeling like a part of something. Something that is more than the sum of it's parts.

Because I can't drink gin every hour of every day (and god knows, I've tried) so I have to do something to fill the sober hours.

I like riding my bike, because its my selfish pleasure...I should carry a 'do not distub' sign on the back. Its me, myself, and Irene, no kids, no bloke.
And a woman on loud Vtwin is pretty cool, specially when scaring grannies and small children..........well ok i lied about the last bit!

I would like to point out I have never gone past a crowd of nippers and popped the cans a few times just to make them jump. Nope, never.:-dd

Had a go on a mates moped at the age of sixteen, it was love at first ride
Many years later I still get the same buzz every time I swing a leg over a bike.

I like people not knowing who I am behind the black visor, I like the freedom. You never appreciate the freedom until its taken away though, but dont worry, i appreciate it now ;)

I like going round a corner and knowing that I did that just right, and going out riding with Dad is good, so is having my better half ont he back. But mostly I ride because its so much brilliant fun :D

Yes impressive statement by the Polish Psychologist.

I also loved this when I read it and thought I would share it :D

During the night she sleeps, when morning comes I wake her from her lair.
The air is crisp and fresh, gently I wheel her to the roadside. I press a
button, she growls and stretches, then purrs with delight. I climb upon her back; she bites down on the asphalt and bounds towards the back roads. Air brushes against my face, the road streaks beneath her wheels, her sleek lines cut effortlessly through the early morning mist. She pounces from corner to corner pressing into the bends and leaning down to brush the road surface. As the road opens up she roars and sprints to catch the horizon, tirelessly we ride together, trees rushing past blurring into a green mosaic of colours. Eventually time prevails, returning homeward she delivers me safely back, she purrs as I lead her to her den, she's warm, she rests, and once again she sleeps.

I started because I've always wanted to and I couldnt afford to insure my car for my second year of driving, so sold the car, brought a zxr400 and insured it. then brought the sv and havent looked back since.. I love riding and in the future money may be enough to own a car but i'll only get one when i can afford to own a car and a bike.

Normally cos I've managed to get the bloody thing started! (is there a kickstart mod for an SV?!)

Elsewise- cos it's fun, so I don't have to suffer the mass of humanity and cost of a train journey to work, it's cheaper and more fun than a car, it's noisy and upsets (some of) the neighbours, it's fun and did I mention that it's fun?

Oh- and continually tinkering with the damn machine keeps me and my hands busy.
