Ok first bike alls well and good but when im using engine braking (slowing down) going around 4-2k ish i get a whining comming from the engine. it sounds a bit like a car in reverse.

Is this antyhing to worry about?

Yea, theres a whine, theres all sorts of odd noises. I have this very fast ticking noise between 4k and 5k, which I've decided is the chain or something. Its deffo not the engine, as my cam chain tensioners where checked a few weeks back, all hunky dory there.

AndyBrad do you blip the throttle on down changes? Or is it when its already in gear and you just let off the throttle?

v-twins are noisy buggers, unless it sounds catastrophic it's almost certain to be normal...

you should hear a competition single, if your SV made a noise like my KTM (running 100%) you'd be getting ready for a big repair bill:D

I reckon it's just because you have a standard can, so all the engines wierd noises are obvious.

Its probably an Australian model whining about Rossi.

I think its a clutch whine you can hear, I changed my oil which has quietned the engine back down and I can hear the whine from the clutch again.

I have 2 SVs. One has a normal SV whine...and I ignore it, as its only just audible.
The other SV has a whine like no other, its so loud its above the noise of the race can and engine, in fact I have even reverted to wearing earplugs with it. But we know she has various probs, so have not got to the bottom of that one yet! but when the engine blows up I'll give you the answer:rolleyes:

Ok sounds good. I do tend to worry a lot you see. Cost me a grand on my mg as i was so paranoid about the head gasket i was starting to worry i was going the same route with this.

Cheers for putting my mind at rest

I've got an oil leak out of the head gasket on the yellow SV. brand new too, after we swapped the cylinder head....only a weep mind, but makes me paranoid...along with the flat tyre, the dodgy electrics, did I mention the whine.....

Another thing to check is make sure your chain tension is correct.

As an aside, a mate bought a Yam FZR600R and had it back into the shop complaining it "whined" when he revved it.

Mechanic told him it was PSP.

Post Sale Paranoia.:D

It was just the engine coming on cam but he did not believe his mates:rolleyes:
Same dude adjusted his 03'Blade chain so it was tight as feck , but only realised after saying his bike was making a funny whining noise after stopping after a blast up the A82 lochside. Lucky boy. Its a plank of a bike but it must have felt like a hardtail!

If its none of these things suggested, as said, get yersel a loud pipe and rip off the snorkel off the airbox. Sorted!:)

Its the gearbox complaining. Engine breaking is actually letting off the throttle and letting it slow down. Dropping gears then dropping the clutch is basically using the gearbox to slow down.

Try to learn the almighty blipping technique (Basicaly matching the engine revs to what it would be in the next gear down...if you know what i mean) before releasing the clutch. This way you will allow for engine braking and probably not get the while as much.

+ 1, check your chain tension though as a precaution.

I noticed soon as i bought my k3 that it makes a totally different noise in 5th and 6th ( really loud whining ) but it sharp dissappers when you pin the throttle so i just keep doin that :-D

Mines started whining loudly now too, seems to be coming from the clutch basket. Notice it on the run off and a touch if I rev the bike. Its loud enought to be heard over a unbaffled can, goes like "whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeeee e" as you slow. I'm suspecting low oil as I haven't had chance to check due to not being at the bike, but it is rather worrying with me having swapped the basket last month.
Andy did you ever get to the bottom of your whine?

Mine chain needs tightening too, and I think I'll have a look at the clutch adjustment while I'm at it.

I get a windy/whining noise in 3rd and a little in fourth at low revs with steady throttle, this isn't what you guys are talking about, anyone got a clue what it is?

SV Engine was machanically very quiet... well compaired to the Priller, now that does make some noise, ticking, wining and general noise. I wouldnt worry too much.

No none of that... unless the engine kicks back onto the sprag clutch on start up. If anyone hears ^^ than get it checked out!!!!

looked at all of those and still nothing. Still whines on deceleration so thinking it might be something like the cam chain. hovever im just ignoring it for the mo :)

Well I found out what mine looks to be, oil. Its very low, had to tilt the bike right to see it in the window. So after a long round walk I have managed to pick some up and will put it in when I get back to the office. Hopefully that should stop the noise and not done any damage.
Only looked at the oil last week, so will need to keep a careful check on it to see if she's burning to much.

I noticed this one as well. Thought about tapits... then thought again. my clutch seems to be making a noise at the moment. spinning noise when lever is out, silent when in... is that anything to worry about???

After topping the bike up with about 200-300 ml of oil and making no difference I bit the bullet and took the cover off, more about it and photos are on my --> blog <-- (http://bikersview.blogspot.com/2008/09/whiney-clutch.html).

Ooooh interesting and bugger.

Grinch
18-09-08, 09:12 PM
Yep its easy to take the cover off and check as long as the bike is on the side stand the cover just comes right off with no oil loss. The only risk is with the rubber ring seal that it might not seal proper again afterwards. But you can find that out and get a new seal later as it just tends to weep, all you need is a 8mm spanner/socket and a 10mm for the clutch springs.

Grinch thats mad. Glad you found that before it found you and the outside world!

Just don't overtighten the clutch cover and it'll re-seal fine.
