View Full Version : Two weeks to pay day... but...

Apologies for the multiple elipsis but I'm a little bit worried. Now, I'm not really afraid of the rear sliding about but what are the chances of the tire exploding/delaminating on me?
http://photos-d.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v329/0/20/284002969/n284002969_2697579_7080.jpg
Now, I'll be doing about 400-500 miles over the next two weeks and pay day is the 15th. The bit in the middle where the tread is thinning/beading is almost visible is only on about a third of the tire, the rest still has full tread. Not sure how to adapt my riding style to match, I have been using rear brake more recently as I'm just now starting to get the hang of using it and still getting a relatively okay body position; should I stop?
Will I make it to pay day?
Was thinking of another Z6 (this one has gone off extremely quick over about 50 miles) or maybe back to the supercorsa pro etc type of tyre.
edit: The band of tearing on the tire is narrower than it appears on the photo, iPhone camera is not very good.

That's what I don't like about Z6's. You can't tell how low the tread is until the tyre is fooked because there is no tread in the middle. That won't last 400 miles

Bugger. In fairness, I've already had, daamn, thinking about it I've had 6k out of them already and they'd done about 2k when I bought the bike from AndyB. Crazy.
edit: 4k out of one of blue's scrubbed SC Pros before (I think due to me) bike died too.

No chance mate, you will have canvas showing in 50 miles.
Do you have a mate / parent with a credit card that can pay for a new rear? You can pay them back on pay day before they have to pay the credit card bill? (I'm assuming you don't have one yourself else you wouldn't be waiting for pay day?) I did that recently for a friend whose tyres had gone the same way, they paid me back before my credit card bill even arrived.

If you don't then PM me and I'll lend you the dough until pay day! This thread has been playing on my mind and if you have to use the bike, then you WILL need to change that tyre else it could/would end in tears

Have a look for second hand tyres, they can be picked up for next to nothing and some will even last for 1000+ miles.

Yeah you do need to change that mate, wouldn't risk riding on it at all, perhaps not even to go to the tyre place, depending on distance! Once you get that line...it's about to go...

Ah, I had no idea it was so bad! Thanks very much, I'll either head to a tyre place cause I can pick something up for cheap (I mean, I can spend about £30-40 quid and still be fine). If not, I'll get the bus - saves me money anyways, and I can catch on on some reading. I honestly had no idea it was that bad, I've been out riding quite fast with the tyre like that.

As others have said, you won't get another 500 miles out of that! Well you might, but you really would be pushing your luck!!
Do you not have a credit card/overdraft?

Mine and Philbut's Z6's did exactly the same thing, seem totally fine then pow they are gone and you have about 200 miles to replace them. Mine did 7100 miles last time.

Cheers guys, I'll probably use my mum's credit card for it, if not, I have a natwest credit card available to me. I'll probably bus it down this week, it'll be fine.

Get a pair of PR2's mine have done 8K miles and the back is only just getting to the point of changing, still plenty left though to the illegal mark :)
^^Just seen that. Good stuff, good tyre! get one on the front as well though if you can afford!

Prob a bit late, but I've got a spare rear Pirelli Diable Strada (just about the same tyre I think) in the garage, you can have for the price of postage...
I changed it as the front was goosed, and put a set of Michelins on...its a bit squared off, but still good for a few miles...

Erm 1 thing though, when you get it back MAKE SURE you check that the tyre is on the right way. Seriously youd be shocked how many times Ive heard of it been put on wrong. Ive been lucky and the place I get them from (National Tyre's) the manager always says to me check it before you go. ;)

I'd tell him to go out there and check/take a look himself ... 'quality control' and customer satisfaction is HIS job surely?!!?!? .. I'd say if I went out there and found it was on the wrong way I'd want it turned round again and compensated for my time!! ;)

Oh it is a bad day. I hate buses. Booked in at noon tomorrow. I'm strangely excited about getting a new tyre.

Nah, I work from 3-7 :D It's cause I'm a student, innit. I had to do some stuff for my mum on photoshop, and I got it mostly done on the bus (hour each way to work), so that's one thing.

No he does look but I think its good that he reminds the customer to check, he is a good lad. I mean it cant hurt can it? + If I ever went somewhere else ill know to check :)

New tyre fitted - 148.50! Bloody ridiculous. I won't be using robinson's again for tyres. Lovely feel though even in the pouring rain with the shiny bit- it's mostly gone now after my 25 mile commute but I'm still taking it easy.

No, £148.50 for a PR2 (Pilot Road 2) rear + the guy adjusted my chain - presumably you have to have the chain off to get the new tyre on anyway? Oh and he took it for a ride for 10 minutes. Plus it took about 1 hour 15 to sort, I don't know if that's normal time but seemed an age.

WTF you got riped off there bud! Its only £200 at my local national tyres for both tyres doing and they do all the work with taking tyres out and all that... For PR2's. Took about 20 mins and they let me watch they doing it all.
Wouldnt use them again bud! See if there is a national tyre's near you next time. :D

Yeah did seem a bit weird, didn't even ask either! Still, a wide selection of motorcycling press to peruse- although coffee is 20p. Stupid. Robinson's might be good for sourcing parts but they're just too busy for their own good.
It's not cheap but:
1) You should always ask how much something will be before you agree to buy it
2) A lot of people citing cheaper tyres:
a) Fit them their selves so have no labour costs
b) Buy from the cheapest Internet source
c) Fit less expensive rubber, I'd expect the PR2 to be one of the dearest tyres you can put on the SV. It's relatively new, and current Michelins are rarely the cheapest. The pilot sport has now been replaced by the Pilot power for example and so can be bought cheaply, it also isn't duel compound, and won't last as long.
A lot of tyre places discount tyres, it's possible you paid the RRP.
Still steep, I think I got a set of PR2s fitted to a friend's ZX6R for about £215, and they're marginally bigger sizes.

I paid £220 for new front and rear on my bike and thats the centre of London! Yes that is an age, the guys at esstinal do a good a job quickly.
But as Jambo said, thats how others do it cheap. The advice I have been given is that is not really worth fitting your own tyres, hell at the tracks they don't charge much either to fit tyres on wheels. I would rather some do it for me and it be done right!

Well, as it was a bit of an emergency, I'm annoyed but overall pleased with the tyre and being back on the road so I'll look into a better place to get them done next time. I'm not really up for fitting my own tyres as I'd probably stuff it up and am happy to pay for fitting. Ah well!

I've also been advised not to fit my own tyres many times, usually by people not capable of checking their own oil. To save about 30 quid it's well worth the work.

I've done it, with the correct equipment it's do-able at home, but the chances of scuffing your rims are pretty high, which is the main reason most people fussed about this would be best off taking it to a garage. It's also hard work and a fair bit of fuss. I'd do it again, but it's certainly not a easy job that everyone should be doing themselves. I found breaking the bead and getting the tyre off without wrecking the paint rather hard work!

Oh right I just use vice for breaking the bead and have never touched rim with that. My rims are scuffed to hell though because I'm lazy and dont bother with rim protectors on my own wheels, but if you've seen the rest of my bike you'll see why this isn't an issue!

I've fitted my own tyres too! £115 for the last pair on the CBR - Dunlop D208RRs so not a new tyre but by all accounts I've read it's a decent tyre, and has caused me no issues. 180 rear there too.
I scratched the rims, but it's my own fault as the bead breaker has a small piece of metal that I guess is designed to stop the wheel slipping - er, except it scratches it. I'm removing that next time!
Other than that, I had trouble fitting the front, and took it to a shop for them to pop the bead over the rim, but I think I know why it was so much trouble & am ready to give it a go again :)
I don't know if I'll do the tyres on the GSX-R myself though - I'd probably be getting 2CTs which are about £180-£190 for the tyres alone (on the internet) and it would not be much more to have them fitted. They have some serious equipment at tyre fitters, so much easier! But this way I'll guarantee not to damage them, I don't mind screwing up the CBR rims practicing lol.

Only if saving 30 quid is worth the risk of scratching the hell out of your rims! But from what I have read of you on here, I don't think you're that fussed!

Have changed them on other peoples bikes with the use of rim protectors and done no damage at all. My own bike is a bike, not ornament so I'm not really rsed.

I've never scratched my rims, even the soft-as-chocolate dymag, and I've had the tyres on and off it half a dozen times. Good approach and good kit pays off. On the other hand, I've had rims damaged by shops more than once.
At the price you just paid, I hope it came with a free lapdance. But, anyone who says you can't tell when a Roadtec or Strada is getting low is just wrong- a glance at the tread beside the slick section shows you how low yours was.

Indeed, I have had far more damage done to my rims by monkies in shops that don't give 2 hoots than me doing it and taking care about it myself ;)

Go for PR2's mate. Unless you do track days you wont notice the difference im willing to bet! Ive never had a grip issue at all in the dry with these tyres (wet sometimes they can spin up a little when you take the mick with the throttle or there is diesel about, but what tyre doesnt do that? :D), they give good feedback and last pretty well too. (8K out of a rear for me). :)
Upto you though if you feel better having the sportier rings.

If they're much cheaper I might lol...I don't do enough miles on the GSX-R for it to matter tbh...CBR is another matter, something like PR2s might end up on it ;) again depends how cheap though.
Its really not that hard to change tyres without scratching rims.
I run over the tyre with a van to break teh bead, and use a big ****off screwdriver wrapped in electrical tape.
Ghetto, but it works, and no scratches.
