View Full Version : Another Down
Not me, my Dad. Happened Saturday for what was going to be a quick ride. I had been out on the bike all morning, got home and asked my father if he wanted to go for a ride.
Anyway, about 6miles on our way to Squires, the front wheel came up on his R1 over a crest and he couldn't get it back down. I was quite a distance behind him when it happen. I went round the corner/crest to see something lieing in the road. I jumped off my bike and started running so fast I nearly fell flat on my face. There was already a couple of people at the scene.
As a result: Him: two broken bones in his hand which need wire put in to help heal, broke right shoulder blade, lots of gravel rash on the back and legs, possibly fractured his right ankle (they were doing more xrays today at the hospital). He might have also broken his right wrist. Lots of bruising aswell. He was wearing his leather jacket, jeans, boots, gloves and helmet (obv). It was only Friday night when I was saying to him he should be riding in full leathers instead of his jeans.
He has had surgory on his hand today and they were doing some more scans. Not entirely sure what has happened today as I only saw him first thing this morning. Going again tomorrow morning to check up on him.
He should fix but the bike isn't so lucky.

The last picture shows the cop stood next to the bike. I am at the side of the road where it went through the hedge.
I know these guys won't read this forum but I want to say a huge thanks to: the women who rung the ambulance/police, the guy that stopped and was going to play cricket who was very helpful, the biker on the BMW who stopped and got out some bandges etc. Also a huge thanks for the ambulance crew and one of the traffic cops that was there.
Stay safe guys.
Blimey. Hope he has a swift recovery.

Yeah. We're not talking 3figures though. They're in field...along with some very dented R1 Akra's. I got some pictures of other bits but nothing interesting.
Yeah, he is very lucky indeed. He won't be thinking like that right now but once he is on the mend he will realise.
I thought it was a little too early to ask if he was thinking about getting something else. When I told him the bike is more than likely a write off he said "Good...I wouldn't want it back anyway"....I blame the morphine for that response!
GWS to your dad.......
the bike looks.........urm.......... different
could of been a lot worse.
GWS again

He was lucky with the surroundings of the crash (bush and field, no walls, trees or posts).
Wish him the best of luck recovering - by the way out of interest, what kind of speed was he doing?

GWS to your dad matey! i kinda know what fields feel like, they can bloody hurt! if i had a choice tho i'd pick a grassy field over anything else, keep us posted on your dads recovery.
I drove down the approach road to Squires a few weeks back in the car. It was ridiculous to see how many flower tributes there were on EVERY bend.
You're dad is very lucky, and its good to hear that his injuries werent more serious. Best of luck to him for his recovery.

Hope your old man gets better, cant see the pics (here at work) but it sounds like he came off better than the bike... which is good.
A dodgy road to be doing high speed down... mostly because the police are often there.

Doesn't sound like the injuries are quite as bad as it could have been given how far that bike went! GWS etc etc. Did the front just come up too quickly, is that what you meant in your original post? (couldn't get it back down, etc)

Nice to know your dad is ok - clearly bonkers though by the looks of the bike and its location after that off ;)
Popped down to the hospital this morning before work. He had some more xrays yesterday and found he has broken a few more bones. Right ankle and his right wrist must now be included in the original list. He currently has both arms in plaster and his leg.
Thanks for all the well wishes guys. He has read the forum a few times.
I am going to go look at the bike tomorrow as it is at a recovery place just up the road from where I work. Will have a few more pictures.

That road is pretty dodgy, so easy to be silly on a fast bike, hence why the coppers love it.
Heal quick.

Christ that is one launched bike! Glad your Dad is relatively ok, although its always such a shock to have to come back to an accident with a loved one and not know what the score is.
I have an image of the front end coming up then just shooting out from under him for about 100 yards into the field

Oh jeez, that must have been really awefull for you; sometimes my dad shoots off ahead of me, and I worry I'll come round a corner to find him on the floor. I'd be broken if that happened.
Hope your old man gets well soon, maybe he'll calm it down a bit and keep his foot over the rear brake, Max Biaggi (Brno 1998) stylee!!!

Yeap. That be the one.
Saw him last night and he seemed a little more chirpy. He is just tired as he is not sleeping properly and on painkillers. There was brief discussion of him getting another bike but I guess only time will tell. I want him to! I know how much he loves it.
Went to look at the bike this morning before work as it's just up the road at the recovery place. It's worse than what I remember.
That bike does look a lot worse than on the pictures in the field. Your dad is one lucky lucky man...... he had somebody looking out for him that day.

Been to the hospital this evening.
He has now been told he now needs a screw in his ankle. Lots of people are going to visit him though. I am sick of ringing round people and telling them. Means having to go through it all over and over.
Also quite worried about having to look after him when he gets home, though we don't knw when that is yet. Also work might only be paying him SSP whilst he is off. I might end up having to sell my bike to raise some cash...or get a second job. :(

Also quite worried about having to look after him when he gets home,
now I can give you advice on this one.........
hes a bloke( no insult intended)
I found after Im Indoors had his hip done, that they get cantankerous if you offer too much help, throw their dummy out of the pram in frustration, and after a couple of weeks feel like superman and do things they aren't supposed to!! like getting 1000cc bike out if shed when your supposed to be using walking sticks........ and cleaning it while your away in Scotland:rolleyes:with a mate that has a pot on one arm and walking stick too, cause hes had a bike accident and has scaffolding in too:o
Don't ask...you can almost imagine the scenario.
I'm sure your dad will get all the help he needs for when he comes out. They won't send him home unless he can perform certain tricks, and they give em all sorts of advice to make life easier, and sometimes give them equipment to use too.;)
His employee (though we happen to work at the same place...he works in production I work in IT) have said that they aren't going to pay him sick pay. I reckon he will be off work for atleast 2months. Looks like I might have to sell my bike so we have some ****ing money.
Also I am going to work to my job description. Instead of getting in 45mins early in a morning and working through my unpaid lunch (by choice on both counts). My Supervisor is away from Monday for two weeks and it's normally me that deals with everything he is supposed to...not anymore. If it's not in the description I am not going to do it!
Really ****ed off about this.

GWS to your dad. Looking at the bike it could have been alot worse, that is one broken bike!
As has been said, when he gets home dont fuss over him. I dont mean that to sound patronising BTW! When i came home from hospital after my accident my g/f, mother, g/f's mother fussed like mad to the point we almost fell out!!!
Good luck with it all.
BTW, whats your companies reason for not giving your dad sick pay?!

everyone is entitled to Stat Sick Pay AFAIK, may not be a lot though, whether he works in another dept or not. I'd ask questions if i were you. As for yourself in your situ, don't blame you, I'd feel the same!

I'm guessing Chasey means he won't be getting any discretionary sick pay, not that he won't get SSP. £75.40 a week isn't really a great deal to live off though. :( Chasey, out of interest, what is the company policy on sick pay?
The company policy used to be full pay whilst sick for aslong as they saw fit. People started taking advantage and having days off, even weeks being 'ill'. One guy was so ill that he couldn't work but he could play 5 a-side when he was off. Now though they are only paying SSP. I highly doubt my Dad's director is going to tell him aswell. I guess he expects it to filter down through me. ****ing coward.
I have been trying to find his contract but can't seem to find it in his "document keeping" place.
If I have to sell the SV I will buy myself a new bike for my 21st next April. I really hope it doesn't come down to that though.
Thanks for all the messages though guys..it's good to have somewhere to vent my anger! :D
Anyway, time to go out and party!

I hope he gets well soon and that they pay him his sick pay- it's a total farce not to after that accident!
Someone was looking out for him that day, what a mess that bike is.
Get well soon x
Another quick update: They found a blood clot on my Dad's lung (which I have been told is fairly normally after what has happened (multiple broken bones). He is now on blood thinning drugs to stop the clotting. He is really confused aswell down to the concoction (sp) of drugs he is on.
Finding it hard to cope right now : /

Sorry to hear about your dad, he's lucky to get out of that with only the injury's he has.
Dont worry too much about selling your bike to make ends meet for the time being either, it wont matter if you go a month or two over, you can make arrangements to catch up when he's better.
I know its hard, but keep your chin up and stay strong. All the best.

Well my Dad finally made it out of hospital 1 day short of 4 weeks. Been very up and down when he was in. He spent one night on a ventilator in high dependancy. He's on the mend now though and glad to be back at home.

Leather jacket and denim jeans. Was like that in the middle of his back aswell. The Doc said he was lucky because it was only the first layer of skin. Looks to be healing well.
He's not doing too bad. Had his pins out his hand today and gotta have that pot on for two more weeks. He had the pot off his right arm when he was still in hosp. His ankle is going to be in for atleast another 4 weeks at a guess (I am no doctor though :)).

I gathered that bit, mine went purple and swollen for three weeks and after that they went a horrible yellow bruise colour for two months after my big off. I kept checking to see they were still there!
All the best to him, hope he decides to get on a bike again but I can understand if he opts not to.
I was just pointing out for those who might think it was a testi!

Going by his previous post he was wearing a leather jacket and jeans, looks like the jacket rode up.
You are correct Geoffry.
It was only the night before when I was telling him to wear leathers all the time. Followed by a "yeah I know".

Yeah I bet he has. I was worried those rashes were sustained through leather! send him all out good wishes anyway.
That rash looks painful Chasey. Give your dad my best wishes. Believe me fella, his mood will soar being back at home. I was very down in the hospital and I was only in a week. Just having home comforts picks you up about 50%.
Its obviously going to be a fairly lengthy recovery. Is work sorting him out? If he sees the smallest improvement every day (could be as much as being able to go to loo without supervision) then it gives you more and more hope.
Ive seen quite a lot of people on bikes when ive been in the car this Summer, in clothing that is nowhere near sufficient. One of the worst thing is either seeing riders in shorts & tshirt, even worse is seeing female pillions hanging off the back of a zx6 in trainers jeans and the shortest fashion leather jacket showing bare skin. Ive even seen lasses in shorts on them with the rider doing in excess of 90mph. Crazy
