Would an ex-demonstrator bike but you off?
i.e. - Registered by a Suzuki dealer as a demo bike for the first 1000 miles or so, then sold onto someone. He has since covered 4500 miles and is now selling it...
Its in mint condition, and has a full service history, but I'm guessing that the usual ' don't exceed 6k revs until 400 miles (or whatever) was not adhered to...
Unless the dealership ran it in themselves by the book (unlikely?)
So, would you?
Thanks,
Billy.

It wouldn't put me off, in fact my Tornado is an ex demo bike

The one time I had a demo-bike out I bounced it off the limiter in 1st and 2nd.
It had less than 300 miles on it at the time.
What do you think :)
However I believe that Cupar Suzuki DO actually run the bikes in properly - I think that they give them to their machanics to run in over a weekend BEFORE demo-ing them.

2006 GSXR600
What do you mean 'What are you going to do with it?'
Edit - I take it you mean track / road?
If so, its to replace the SV as my road bike.

Are you going to bimble on it a couple of times a week, or do you want to cane the living f### out of it for 45,000miles?

Just had a thought - most of us wouldnt know if the bike we are riding was an ex-demo bike if it had more than 2 owners anyway - would we?
The logbook only shows the details of the previous owner....

Just going to be used for 4-5k per year - no commuting, just for pleasure. Maybe a trackday....

I wouldn't worry about it then if the price is right

Price seems good, and more importantly for me (living at the ar$e end of the country) its local!
My D650 was an ex demo. I used it for very similar puposes as you have planned, Billy. It was a great bike, it never missed a beat. I'm sure it had been thrashed a bit (or a lot) but I don't believe in all this pussy-footing around malarky when running in.

Well, all depends if the guy coming to see the SV tonight buys it....
If so....I'll be off shopping for a new bike!

Sounds like not much to be worried about then.
Thanks for the advice.

Erm just wondering how long are modern 600 engines supposed to last? I mean they rev A LOT so would guess not long?

Hence my comment about whether it was to be bimbled or thrashed.

Probably just as long as a 1000 or a twin!!! just because they rev higher does not mean they last less. Seeing as i doubt they spend a lot of thier time at those sort of revs for long.
I could use your twisted logic to say as a SV has lesss revs to play with its reved closer to the rev line more often!! ;)
Good luck with the sale Billy.
The ex-demo bit would not put me off, to be fair the whole running in thing these days is a bit of a red herring. The worst a modern engine is likely to suffer as a result of poor running in is glazing caused by holding a constant throttle for a long period. The rev's bit is less important, modern manufacturing tolerances are much better than say 20 years ago and you don't get much swarf as a result. Bedding in the pistons is not what it used to be. What is important is that the mineral oil is taken out and replaced with a synth - they would have done that. The rest of the 1st service is just checking to see what's worked loose and dabbing a bit of grease here and there (for show mainly).
As long as it comes with warrenty i can't see a problem. I'd have one, but only at the right price as has been said!!

Wouldn't put me off. I reckon the first time the bike gets caned is when the mechanic takes it out for a PDI 'bimble'.
Out of interest - how much is it? £4500-£5000?

£4250 at the mo - I think I can get him to £4100, maybe £4000

Hmmm to be fair you might be right about my bike... I guess the Engine might be more stressed than yours as the piston speed in mine is actually higher than in yours at red line. :( All thanks to a 67.5 mm stroke... vs your 42.5mm
15000x60x0.0425=38.25KPH piston speed
10500x60x0.0675=42.525KPH piston speed
So in that respect mine is slightly more stressed. But more than that comes into it... Such as length of the con rods, mine I know are pretty much twice the length of the stroke so this keeps the braking and accelerating low, im not sure about yours but id guess they would be in the same sort of area (twice stroke).
But the 600's cams and timing will be way more stressed as you have to rev more than I do to make the same power. So generally speaking my bike wont be using as big a % of the revs, so may jest stay slightly less stressed.
I guess then there is the amound of actual pops mine at max power pops (fires) 9250 times per second, yours at max power (14000RPM) 28000times. :o A lot basically. :smt019 Not sure if this ads stress or not... I would imagine it does help wear things like valve springs out though. :(
Then there is the build quality... Rotax, make Plane engines so reliability is high on the list, they have a good record for reliability in the v990 (the RSV/Falco/tuano/futura/caponord).
I know the japs make good engines and havnt heard of many issues even with the 600 screamers.... so hard to say there.
It will be interesting to see what the life expectancy is for the engines.

I was just wondering how much mine might be worth (not that I'm thinking of selling!).
Seems a pretty good price to me :-D

I bought my VFR as an ex-demo. It was bought with 200 miles on the clock and 60 of those were my test ride! Even though the machine was over a year old when bought, it had hardly been used.
I think ex-demo could be a euphemism for pre-registered. Did the current owner say it was an ex-demo?
Anyway, in answer to your question, it would not put me off.

You could be right

Half right.
A collection of smaller pistons (as in an IL4) has less reciprocating mass, lower inertia, and less friction than fewer big pistons, so can be accelerated more swiftly and causes less stress. And because the capacity is spread over more cylinders, the stroke is smaller and pistons have less distance to travel, which means they have a lower average speed than those of a twin or a triple.
All of which means you can rev it harder.

Yep, Bike mag, Sept 2008, page 177.
Good luck with the sale Billy.
To be honest, regardless if a bike is ex-demo or not, you don't know how it's been run in if you don't know the seller.

My SV650SK4 was a dealer demo bike, only had 87 miles on the clock though, and it's never had any problems.

Mine is an ex-demo, its first 2000 miles were probably pure abuse. Could not care less, it's still strong as an ox.
