Can anyone point me in the direction of the most common earth wire that goes dodgy. reason being I am looking to get Suzy out again and she still only starts on one cylinder. We swapped the rear coil that caused one set of probs, would a front coil be dodgy too? would it cause only one cylinder to start being the ignition one?
In the past we have solved chaffing on the subframe prob, and the clutch(don't need to pull it on start anymore)
My line of investigation makes me wonder if(as there has been lots of dodgy electric probs) the earth wires are causing something.

go feel which downpip is getting hot. Or, just touch the fornt one, if its getting hot, then the rear is still not firing
I dont know alot about SV electrics...i know there are some easily chaffed wires under the seat unit though?

Spray some water on the downpipes, that'll tell you which one is firing.
on curvies there is a earth wire going from the battery directly to a bolt on the back of the crankcase, the coils earth though the frame which in turn is attached to engine and earth (on my SV i have extra earth cable running from the coils to battery).
one side of coils goes to live and other is a switched earth i beleave (not 100%), so track back all the wires going to the coils.
why not swap coils around to see if problem folows it, have you checked that the spark plug has not failed, ie that it still conducts through

new plugs, I would imagine that they should be fine, worth a look though. Cheers TSM. As there was corrosion everywhere i would probably hedge my bets that the earth you speak about maybe naffed as well.
She starts on one, but after she gets her juices flowing so to speak, she runs on two...hmmm

doubt that earth is shagged, if it was you would prolly burn out some other wires as then other thin wires would be used as earth. I did this once, forgot to reattach the main earth and when i turned on the bike, the gear sensor wire started to melt.

oh and when the indicators flash, so does the headlight. I know there is little room for this to happen, as the other SV does this slightly, but on this SV it does it like flashing Blackpool illuminations, which is one of the reasons I thought about investigating this annoying prob
hi dizzz (nice belch at squires other wed nite) you need to go right back to basics take tank and seat off and unplug all the multi plugs mark them with coloured tape or nail varnish for ease of putting back together use a small bottle brush or one from an electric razor should be small enough and wd 40 or electrical contact cleaner to clean all the connections put your battery on charge over night then connect all the ingnition side of wiring first try firing up if you put a timing lamp on each plug lead it will tell you if you getting ht from coil if all is well reconnect in the reverse with the ignition off switch on after each connection etc if all this fails drop me a line and i call round with my multi meter etc and see if i can fix ok
the battery needs to be fully charged to get the low tension side of your coils charged. flashing or dimming headlights are battery charge related even when the engine is running a tired battery often causes this
alot to digest hhmmmm....
take care

I use the same battery on the other SV too. Theres not much point in having a 2nd battery to get ruined by not using it,as Suzy is practically permanently laid up....if ya get me. I don't get any prblems battery related on the othet SV, so I would guess that its more or less fine.

Mines does this, its caused by the live feed running to the headlight. I know this as I've taken it off and saw the lovely corrosion on it. Cleaned it up and the problem easied, but I need to do this again.
Here is a photo of the affected block and the bad live -

My next fix is to run a new live for the lights...
Also something else to look out for is the starter relay live touching on its mounting like this -

I don't think its your front coil as this one is connected through to the rev counter and if it plays up the rev counter cuts out too.

thanks for that Grinch, these things to look for are ones I can do myself, as I know where they are. First pics are round the nose cone, over the headlight? and others behind the infill panels?
Yep, right first time... Front left panel if I remember correctly, and the relay is right side saddle shutter.
I had all the plastics off the bike trying to find the problem. Basicly pulled all the connectors off and cleaned them up with electrical cleaner, then found the front, the connector fell apart so I had to re'wire it. But I'm not 100% sure that the wire had not corroded inside so I plan on replacing it with a new one but I will need to go through the wiring diagram to check what it feeds. Either that or just bodge a additional wire direct from the battery.
