Hi,

These are photos of a colleague's ever-so-slightly modified R1.

Some sort of urban stealth bike rejected by the US governement last year as being "too fast", I believe, though he's sworn to secrecy by the CIA.

The numbers are (dyno rolling road):

Weight 130kg
Power 174bhp
Torque 76lb/ft @6000rpm

Any comments? Apart from "May I please have a go?"

Alpinestarhero
02-09-08, 12:10 PM
174bhp at the rear wheel or at the crank?

looks mighty fine. I wont ask for a go, cos i'll stack it into the nearest concrete wall. My dad says yamaha r1's suit me though

Tallguy

174bhp at the wheel.

List of mods (thanks Asif!):
Akrapovic full System (carbon cans)
Power Commander III
Gilles Rear sets
Active Quick Action Throttle
Renthal oversized sprocket (hence only produced top speed of 199mph on the Dyno…)
Renthal chain
Renthal Grips
Akrapovic Carbon bits =tank cover, tank side panels, rear hugger, heel plates, yoke protector crank case cover, heat shield.
R1 Designer seat
Pillion single seat conversion
Yamaha Racing screen
Yamaha Tail tidy
Datatool Gear indicator
R&G Roll over protectors
Michelin Pilot 2ct tyres
CRG Levers
Rear Indicators incorporated into brake light
L.E.D Flush mount front indicators
Personalise R1 plate
Custom built SATNav mount

She might be up for sale after the launch of the new R1 later in the year.

Nice, but umm...130kg? He's not got any serious weight mods in that list, what's he done to lose 40kg+ from the standard bike?

I have no idea, will ask him, possibly a typo?

good question. Changing a full exhaust system on a modern bike can save a fair bit of weight, but i didnt think standard fairings fairings weighed alot.

No mention of lightweight aftermarket wheels. Thats an often over-looked performance increasing modification...but in hindsight, it'll turn that yam into a tankslappin' beast to rival even a TL1000s

Mmmmm yamaha R1.......reliable too, nick sanders rode round the world on one.

130 kg would make it 30kg lighter than Hagas SBK ...

what does a standard R1 weigh dry?

130 kg's is RS250 terratory i think? or even RS125?

Typo, sorry, 170kg not 130.

All bhp/torque figures are dyno'd.

Doesn't work at Hendy Ford, lives near Slough but commutes (not on the R1) to Whiteley near Fareham.

Still think it's verrrrry prrrrreeeettttyyyyy...

then I modded it by taking out the restrictors, 100% more power

I said to my dad, the blade looks like the 07 blade...crashed into a wall. A jap bloke then just tidied it up a bit, and it was passed off as new new look.

R1's do look the dogs danglies IMO

Is it just me or can anyone else not see the strips? On the first one the look relatively small - OK not completely gone but maybe 1cm on that left hand side you can see?

The second pic I thought that was a bad reflection off the tyre, rather than the strip, but can't be sure.

Tallguy - big pics of his strips please! :p

Bikes are made to be ridden :D keep 'em clean by all means, but whats the point of having a bike that can easily rack up 130,000 miles on the engine but not use it?

I dream of the day I get an RC30 (or and RC45!) and use it whenever I can and rack up the mileage on it until the engine goes *pop*

Say's who? Never ridden an R1 but have tried a very tuned EXUP thou which had a very trick pair of dymag wheels which weigh f### all. No steering damper and even landing a wheelie slightly off center somewhere on the silly side of ahem (a number with a 1 and a 20 in it) mph didn't kill me....

I'm not sure how it works exactly but I would guess that a lighter wheel will just change the frequency of the tankslapper as you've got a resonating system, tyre being the restoring force. Still needs the carp rear end (TLS!) to cause the 'slapper in the first place.

My mate's 07 R1 was always shaking its head everywhere, possibly partly due to the power delivery? The '08 Blade is a load better he reckons.

Thats due to power delivery connected to bad suspension setup! I know, when I first got mine it did the same all the time when on the power, now ive fiddled with the suspension it rarely does it, like twice in about 5K miles...

It seems most people dont really get what they can out of a bike because they arnt willing to get stuck in and set the damn things up. No offence to your mate Tim... Maybe he did have the R1 setup

Tim in Belgium
07-09-08, 02:56 PM
He tried to have the fuelling sorted with cans, PCIII and rolling road set up, but it was still quite bad. I'm not sure how much he fiddled with the suspension, but then again the roads round here are pretty bumpy.

Aye. Did it not have a damper? That is the quick and easy fix for this sort of issue... I think the Fireblade has them standard, I thought the R1 would have too tbh.

It's the way to cover up problems without solving them!

But to be fair, lots of power on a bumpy road will make it wobble, proper tankslappers say there's a problem.

Aye they do only cover up the issue. Should help though, they do more than just solve these problems. Help with high speed stability too.

If it isnt tank slapping then it is possibly just normal... when the wheel leaves the floor but not for long the steering will move around, especially if the front wheel is bouncing, which is what causes it with mine. Having the suspension setup right reduces this effect.

Hi people,
Thought I'd pop by... the bike in question, posted by my colleague, Tallguy.. is my bike!
Tallguy sent me the link after he posted a pic of my bike and I thought I'd have a look at some of the responses... lol!

Chicken strips are huge, coz in my whole biking career I've only ridden around 5000 miles.
My 1st bike was an R1... so I never really had the chance to practice, take it easy on smaller bike and learn to "throw it around"...
I've had this one for around 6months, and have only managed to cover around 600miles on it, mainly due to the ****e weather and where I work... I work around 80miles away from where I live, and its pretty difficult to that journey on an R1... as you guys can appreciate.

The black number plate is illegal, but god dam its looks sexy! :-) I've been stopped once so far, but like i said its hardly ever out so am not too bothered... But I do carry the road legal one with me...
My aim this year was too get out on to track, and start learning to riding "like a man", but a new child and crap weather has stopped me from doing so.

I'm happy with my chicken strips, so long as I'm around to see my daughter grow up. For the time being, I'm the king of the straights!! :-)

Anyway, have a look at this: is this the new R1?

Right, a list of things you must do:

1) start riding more. Why not? You have a pretty bike. I'm sure its reliable, and easily cleaned :D Mind you, I'm one of those people who dosn't like to just have something sitting there. If I had a desmosedici, I'd probably use it to commute at least once a week on top of the 500 odd weekend miles I'd put on it...every weekend

2) Don't worry about the crap weather. Its a good place to learn. Although I suspect that it could be a bit nerving when you have 150+ bhp at the rear wheel.....

3) Now, don't punch me in the face, and this is completly related to points 1 and 2

Normally I get flamed by now :D

well, like i said, it goes with points one and two...

you can put in loads of stuff, which means you can go away on a nice biking holiday (such as...I dunno....the theoretical SV650.org Annual Rideout 2009), which will cover my point of riding more :D and also, when you put stuff in there, it wont get wet. Which goes with point number 2, because when it does rain on the theoretical AR09, your stuff will remain dry

I'm not winning oyu over am I

i understand what your saying... Im probably on my own in this, but I hate riding in the wet... not coz I'm frightened of falling off, (when you gota go, you gota go) but there is no enjoyment in it... I can understand bikers who ride for a living dont have a choice, but I purely got myself an R1 for pure enjoyment. Having a steamed up wet visor, cars splashing you, freezing, drenched, isnt my idea of enjoyment... like I said I may be the only one thinking that.
That said, I think I chose the wrong country to ride in! lol!

Na, your not alone, i think most motorcyclists dislike it. I dont particularly enjoy it, but it dosn't stop me from going out for a ride, or make me turn around and head for home. My dad will stay put indoors if he suspects rain, he's a tart with his GSXR (although the mighty VFR400 might tempt him to play in puddles with me)

I disagree, I do find it fun (and often challenging) to ride in the rain/wet.

I used to have to commute on the bike, and so invested in decent gear to keep me both warm & dry.

I also like riding quite hard in the wet, but that's just me I suppose.
