re-packing an exhaust?

I have a gold titanium oval exhaust 2 years old, I think it needs re-packing (it is louder than normal)I have checked for blow back, baffle is good also. Is it something I could repair myself (with some help?) or should I buy a new exhaust?

They're normally easy enough to re-pack, most cans are rivetted together so you'll need a rivetter to put it back together

You could but that tends to make them quieter. Not for me thanks.

I have no baffle in mine Sounds ace!! But i am worried it could cause damage/problems if I do not re-pack?? If not then i will leave it as it is, advice please? The louder it is the better..

I would seriously doubt that running an exhaust with no baffles would damage the bike, seing the number of people who ride without them (myself being one of course!! :D)
IMO it sounds SO much better with it out

Packing is different from a baffle Josh.
Spiderman's run his for long enough without packing. As long as louder the better i.e. no trackdays, then should be fine.

2 years makes no difference, how many miles has it done? The original packing in fuel cans tends to last very well.

No packing in an exhaust does not do much harm, it allows the gasses to "rattle round" the can (resonate) which can give all sorts of wierd back pressure, it is not conducive to making good power, probably not worth more than 1bhp though!

On a carbon fibre can the repeated battering of a twin or big singles exhaust pulses can stress the carbon and crack it, not an issue on a metal can or one that's just carbon cosmetic over a sleeve.

Repacking a can is a right pain in the rse, the end caps are a very tight fit and a pain to get out, and to refit. It can be done, all you need is a small drill to remove rivets, some more rivets and a rivet gun (5 quid) to put it back together. Get a sheet of packing off the net, wrap the perforated tube many times then safety wire it round tight.

Or just send it off to fuel and let them do it, it's not too expensive.

Either way, don't worry about it, and if you do, then you don't need to buy a new exhaust.

18000 is probably getting towards end of packings life. I got that info from lots of spannering, f###ing about, modifying my own bike and reading lots on the net and in books.

I'd leave it alone myself.

ahh well, now I got a bike with a can thats been on it for about 7 years, about 21000 miles, never been repacked and don't intend to do it. The previous owner never did it, and neither shall I. Don't make any difference to it now its probably nearly all disintegrated. It all adds to a fuller bwoaaaaarrrrghhhh.
