View Full Version : Is me tyre fudged?

Got the MOT tomorrow (eventually). I got the bike out tonight to stick the standard can back on and noticed this below. I know they are due for replacing, and I know the Z6's are prone to dropping to bits in a very short time. Does this look like it's on its way out?

My only other thought is that it sits on carpet in the shed, and it hasn't moved for 2-3 weeks - so could it just be the carpet print if that makes sense?

I think it might be on its last legs, is it like that anywhere else on the tyre ?

Nope, just that one spot.

Legalities state that it has to have 1mm tread depth and 75% visible tread over the rest of the tyre , I would say that was ok by those rules , and by the time you ride it there it may have worn out a bit better in the looks department .

Might be a carpet imprint then, I'd be keeping a close eye on it though.

I started a thread a while back after I checked me tyres one morning (after moving the bike forward) and found a patch very similar to that one, thought me tyre had melted or summat.

Anyway, turns out it was just where it had been sat on the [rough] drive.

Cheers guys, thanks for the second opinion.

They are on the list for changing soon, was hoping to hold out 'till the NEC and try and pick up a cheap set.

Maybe the little burn out and skidding to a stop last time I was out didn't help :-) (only 'cause I know they need swapping soon). hehehe

That is caused by skidding, you can see the straight line marks where stones have picked up on the rubber. Crash investigators slook for this kind of thing post-accident. The wibbly bits are simply lightly melted rubber and should wear off in a few miles.

Whatever, it's not something a tester can fail the MOT for unless the tyre has a huge flatspot. He'll feel that on the brake testing rollers, if they use them.

bet you it'd pass at our mot centre ;-)

It doesn't look exactly like Z6's on the way out, it is too spread out over the tyre. When mine and several others I have seen wore out it was just an inch-wide line over the part without tread, it never went over the tread. Also my cracking was left to right, not in line with the tyre.

The tyre should be not under inflated either (3 points you see) the tyre wall should be in good condition with no rips or chucks missing out of it. As for the tread long as its not below the wear bars then its fine. However if its looking tried I'll change it with all the rain that we have had and that is coming.

What are the limits on this? We all play with tyre pressures, and often vary up and down from bike manufacturer's recommendation, and tyre manufacturer's recommendation (which can be different anyway). Seems like just another thing you can be nicked for if they're trying to bolster the stats unless it's massively low.

Jambo I would suggest a common sense approach that being if its dangerous casue it doesn't have enough air in it, the tyre won't do the job its meant too. (I think we all know that from looking at the state of it) I send people to nearest garage and tell that to sort it out, or to change the tyre if its a car.

I mean its either normally just happened eg they have punture ect or the car/van/bike is in a crap condition I find plenty wrong of it, as I did when I took a car away. The guy was looking at 12 points he was a little upset, but there is no excuse.

I'm sure that there's grounds for common sense, but allegedly one of the London bikers lot was given three points for low pressure in a tyre. Now I don't know the person involved, he may well have been a muppet running 10psi in the rear, but I would be interested to now the threshold that this becomes interesting to the law, and what they use as a base figure, as every bike and tyre combination is different.

I would like to say that I fully support getting uninsured drivers & unfit vehicles off the road, but for instance with speeding there is a generally accepted threshold at which the law becomes interested (10% +2mph or something). People have been booked for less but it's very unlikely.

I'm running 30psi, do I get 3 points, 25psi, 20psi, 15psi etc?

Should pass as there is plenty of tread there, looks like the rear wheel was locked up for a brief moment.
