View Full Version : calling insulin diabetics
just a quick question. I have just been put onto a couple of types of insulin (fast and slow). I was told to inject my thighs and stomach but as im pregnant feel a bit funny about injecting my stomach. so yesterday I thought Id inject into my bum (its nice and big). was ok at the time but started getting sore and today I have a large bruise. any other places I can inject the insulin? or did I just do it wrong yesterday and its normally ok in bum?
I realise this has nothing to do with bikes and moderators please feel free to delete after a couple of hours.

My sister in law is diabetic and pregnant. She injects into her thighs. I can give her a bell tonight if you like and see how shes getting on.

Injection Site Selection
http://www.bddiabetes.com/US/images/spacer.gifThe most common injection site is the abdomen (or stomach). The back of the upper arms, the upper buttocks or hips, and the outer side of the thighs are also used. These sites are the best to inject into for two reasons:
They have a layer of fat just below the skin to absorb the insulin, but not many nerves - which means that injecting there will be more comfortable than injecting in other parts of your body.
They make it easier to inject into the subcutaneous tissue, where insulin injection is recommended.
http://www.bddiabetes.com/resource.aspx?IDX=2452
Depending on your body type, you'll find that certain injection sites work better than others.
Some people, for example, prefer injecting in the abdomen because the insulin absorbs well there.
But injecting in the abdomen isn't right for everyone, especially young children or people who are so thin and/or heavily muscled that they can't pinch up a half-inch of fat.
Consult with your doctor in choosing the injection sites that are best for you. Your doctor will consider both insulin absorption and site rotation.

Hun i think you are Ok to inject into your stomach (but expects feel free to correct me) They inject into the stomach when they do the DVT injections and they bruise like hell too
haz - mum used to rotate from upper arms abodmen and thighs - in a big circle but when she was in hosp they used to inject into her buttocks and she always ended up with a bruise.

they told me its ok to inject in stomach but I just feel a bit icky doing it. wont have much skin left to pinch an inch there for much longer.

lol....... i know,
As has already been said, if you are injecting into loose skin and not muscle, you'll be fine.
As a side note, I have always been told that for your fast acting insulin, the stomach is preferable as it is absorbed quicker. If you're going to inject yout thighs or upper arms, save it for your overnight, slow acting insulin as the absorbtion (sp?) rate is slower.

Talk to doctors and not the self certified consultants here. :-)
Insulin can kill if injected incorrectly!!!!!!! Please check!

Yes insulin can kill if you inject it into a non-diabetic but its not gonna kill if its injected into a diabetic person no matter how you inject!!
A lot of pregnant women feel they don`t want to inject into their abdomens whilst they`re pregnant and thats obv for psychological reasons. I`d just concentrate on injecting via your upper thighs and upper arms on a rotational basis. Good luck and I hope all goes well

Not sure you are right here. If you inject more insuling to a diabetic person or healthy one you will kill them. That's a fact. Many bodybuilders had close encounter with death after doing so.
Also injecting insuling directly into muscles speeds up the effect of insulin. Injecting directly to a vein can cause a dramatic dip in your sugar level.
I think picking up a phone and asking someone qualified will be more useful than advice from anyone on this forum unless they happen to be diabetes consultants.

Eh? I was referring to the site of the injection rather than the amount of insulin..... the original question referred to the injection site didn`t it?? obviously if a diabetic injects more insulin than has been prescribed then its gonna cause them to have a hypoglycaemic attack and if not acted upon could cause death and a diabetic would know that the insulin is administered sub-cutaneously and not intra-muscular or god forbid into a vein.
I think that there are one or 2 people on here who are competent to give medical advice and I`ve been giving advice to diabetics for about 8 years now. I would hope that unless someone was sure about the advice they were giving then they`d refrain from posting.

Kitkat, give me a bell if you like, I've been diabetic 23 years :D Still learning, I'm quite new to the regime you're on, used to be a cruder 2-a-day system I used.
I do my long-lasting insulin into the thighs and short into the upper arm. I use teeny 5mm needles though, works for me with my twiglet arms. My clinic's been trying to get me off arm injections, because exercise changes the absorbtion rate, but I get on fine with it. Bum should be absolutely fine- when I was diagnosed my mum had to inject me in the bum for ages- but it's quite hard to relax when you're injecting there, bit awkward.
Stomach freaks me out, it's completely irrational but I just can't deal with the idea at all, that's where I keep all my insides. Ugh ugh ugh. I had a nurse try to convince me to do it, I thought I was going to be sick, she just wouldn't leave the subject so I had to walk out before I lost my lunch (and I was supposed to be the Experienced Voice Of Reason for a bunch of noobs at the time!)
thanx for all the advice everyone. Im back at clinic on Monday so will ask about bum then. Managed to inject stomach last night and managed to get a lovely wee black bruise. but its getting easier. used thigh this morning and it was ok. Its the thought of the needle more than actual pain. My finger tips are aching though, testing blood sugars before and after every meal. maybe Ill eat less lol.

Claire this is not a personal go at you. I have been on insulin for some time now. From super healthy to depending on the daily injections in less then a week was a shock. Still coming to terms with it.
I just don't understand why people go for this sort of advice to a bike forum? I am glad you are qualified to give advice. But am not sure everyone here is? I certainly am not, hence saying go and speak to someone qualified as incorrect administartion of insulin can kill/cause a serious health hazards.
That's the only thing I tried to say.

I have basically no fingerprints because of this  Make sure you're using the lowest setting you can on the finger *****er thing, mind, you need so little blood with modern gear that most people really don't need to set it high. I have to, because of all the scar tissue, but with new fingers you should be OK with very little holes. They should probably have showed you this at the clinic, mind

Becuase this is in idle banter which is predominantly not bike related and maybe becuase Kitkat knows there are a few insulin dependant diabetics on here i.e Northy and I can think of another off the top of my head.

Our lass is pregnant, and insulin dependant.
She injects into stomach and all is well. Sometimes she bruises, but it has no risk to the baby at all.
As has been said, anywhere fleshy is good, keep away from muscles. If you use your belly, change the location each time.
If you want to PM me to ask her to PM back that's fine.

No worries, sorry i was really tired last night and misunderstood :D
thanx for advice.
Dave - I asked on here as I know there are a few insulin dependant diabetics on here. I have my dosage all sorted it was mainly just the bum query. Diabetic nurse said upper arms can get sore, stomach is ok, thighs ok anywhere you can pinch an inch really. I can certainly pinch an inch on my bum but it was really sore afterwards and had a bruise. Was just wanting to know if this was usual or I had just done it wrong.
Im back at clinic on Monday but didnt want to bother them by phoning and asking as its not really important and have just been doing in stomach and thighs today.
got scan today and all is well - baby weighs 1lb 6 oz already only 23 weeks. Might be a jumbo one - again.
anyway im away to shoot up again. have a nice weekend everyone.:D

it's a sort of long-range blood glucose test, they'll do it at your clinics to judge your overall control. They used to call it the lie-detector at the sick kids :D But right now if they do one it'll give the results from before you got medicated, so it'll probably be mad.

hi Kitkat, I've tried injecting at different thighs, arms, belly, bum no brusing but posterior definately sore shortly after injection, don't know why but you're not alone having a delicate tush. ;)

oh they did that at the hospital and said it was ok - 5.9. my problem is my blood sugars an hour and a half after eating. If they get too high and stay high, the baby produces more insulin to cope. The other day they were 5.8 before breakfast and 9.3 afterwards. Insulin seems to be working today - 5.1 before breakfast and 7.3 after.

Being a veteran of 22 years diabeticness and having given myself in the region of 32000 injections I can give you the following tips:
Inject yourself where-ever you feel most comfortable - I always used to use my thighs but the nurses at the clinic got me to switch to my abs a couple of years ago because you get better absorbtion due to the proximity to your aorta. Unfortunately it is not a huge area and rotating where you do it is limited (as is my memory for where I last injected...) so the tissue is damaged in places. Of course the middle age spread is helping ;)
Am thinking of switching back to my thighs BUT found that I had more occurences of pain/bruises/bleeding- maybe cos there is more muscle/less fat in my legs. Not so quick and easy at my desk either ;)
