As the rain is now here.. (ha ha like it ever went) I am getting more and more nervous about riding the tuono in the wet as the standard dunlop 208rr's are awful in anything other than the dry.

I dont have loads to spent so I think corsa 3's are out, I was looking at Michelin Pilot Sports as they seem to do the job and are cost effective,(read old and cheap)

other than that I was looking at some conti road or race attacks?

I know this is an Sv forum, but you lot tend to do more mileage in bad weather that tuono riders...! (cept me)

Please list type and make, with reasons for and against, please dont derail with the i dont like his tyres because..

Many thanks

Michelin Pilot Road 2's are supposed to be good.

I quite like my MEZ6's in the winter, but they seem to take a little while to get up to tempurature, and before they do they can feel a little odd

That might just be me though

I have them on my bike all good so far, as the weather close I post my thoughts not used them enough yet say. I would have thought any descent sports touring tyre would be good? The ones I have are meant to warm up quicker I have been told, I'm sure I find this out when its minus something over the winter....

To be honset, i have a r1 and ride in all weather and have found the 208rrs totally great compared to others like bridgestone 020 and 014s. So in all honesty id just stay with 208s as they quite cheep and practical.

Just my 2ps worth.

Well no tyre in this earth is going to stop sports bikes spinning up on corners, its down to rider skill and controlling power, so its up to you, learn to control power and not be throttle happy or spend hundreds on tyres that you hope will help you then find they wont.
If you master your bike you can control the slide and get your experience up, rather than relying on your bike to help you stay on.

I used Pilot Sports through last winter and had no problems (other than going through the back in something like 2000 miles....), got Road Attacks on now and have done plenty of soaking miles on them without any problems. One back end slide but that was on the hairpin at Knockhill, and in fairness I was giving it stacks!

I'd be happy with either, but you'll probably pick up a set of Pilot Sports cheaper than Conti's I'd imagine.

It comes down to feel aswell with tyres; some people are happy on one tyre than another

I'd like to recall the story of Simon Crafer here, who thrashed the world in 1998 at the donington GP (including mighty mick doohan) when he had dunlop boots on.

When the switch was made to michelin, he just couldnt get on with the bike.

As for spinning off at 3000 rpm on a rounadbout, that would be a combo of cold tyres and a really slick surface I imagine (I cant see you being throttle happy with added stupidness Numbers)

(hooligan...be a bit careful about doubting peoples riding skill before you post about it!!! I sense a bit of a catfight brewing now)

I've always used and always will use sports touring tyres. For road riding I see no point in the latest sport tyre unless I did loads and loads of track days.

BT021's - great all weather tyre andd still stick like glue when pushed hard.

Avon Storms - Good in the dry , outstanding in the wet. The only thin with this tyre is the reactive footprint technology. The tyre moves about depending on lean angle to give maximum amount of rubber on the ground, it can feel a bit off as it feels like it's moving (well it is). Takes some getting used to.

I always liked Z6's on my SV. Wanting something more hardwearing on my GSXR I've just fitted a pair to that. I feel more confident on them than I ever did on the Corsa III's doubly so in the wet. I would have thought any of the current crop of Sport Touring tyres would be what you're after, just depends which have a preference for.

The Z6 and Strada are good, but they're diabolical in snow, no centre tread on the rear. But I don't suppose that'll bother most people. All these sport touring tyres are great tbh.

ok im going to try and not get offended, I can in all other circumstances control my bike, being in third gear at 3k rpm coming off a roundabout, is not 60mph more like 20, sure it was too much for these tyres in that amount of rain. The 208rrs are a sport tyre with one piece of tread every 150mm isnt going to help is it..

I am an experianced rider who has ridden though numerous winters, whislt i am not hoping the tyres will cure anything, its purly that it might help...

plus £200 on new tyres compared with the £450 excess on my insurance... ill take the tyres thanks..

+ 100000 for the storms. Everyone in the massive seem to be slowly fitting them now. Trying to get Im Indoors to put em on his Raptor but he is not convinced they will suit.
I've ridden em in all weathers and in some freezin conditions, so has YC..super...shame they went upside down Tuesday, but they weren't to blame:smt090

Conti RA's are great in the wet & dry and work well from cold, although I did once have the rear spin up on me in the wet going up a steep bank.

I had the RA on the sv, but didnt have it long enough with it on to really push and try.

£180 is a good price, but I have a 190/50 back tyre... (boo hoo)

Need a winter tyre that's good in the wet, warms up real quick and even works in snow? Avon Pro-Rain sounds about right. Oh course it will only last about 400 miles but it is performance you are after isn't it? Most tyres these days are a little bit of a compromise, especially as sports bikes become more and more "extreme" and riders demand the very best. Personally one of the best wet weather road tyres I ever had were the old Dunlop 207 RR's, but they had to many grooves in them to stay "fashionable" and the replacement 208, then 209 range were far more track oriented. Heard lots of good things about the Michelins but as has been said it is all about personal needs and preference. Find something you like then stick with it. Lack of confidence in your tyres spoils any wet weather ride so just concentrate on staying smooth and get stuck in....!

Well I have had 3 sets of Road Attacks with about 22,000 miles done in all weathers and they have never been a problem. But things have moved on now so I was thinking on the Avon Storms next, depending on the price, but I will have a good look later as I still have about another 4k of wear on these ones if I'm lucky.

im set on the storms now.. For the tuono they are £151 delivered and fitting is £20 on loose wheels.., just trying to ruin these first so I can justify them

I have to think about snow as I seem to end up riding in it at some point every year, well its more slush when I get to it.

no idea yet, my mate on a gsxr 1100 got k out of his back tyre.. including a huge burn out.. but it depends intirley on your size the bike, road condition, how you ride etc, Im expecting 4 out of them if i get more ill be happy.

I've got Conti Road Attacks on my MT which seems to be pretty solid in the wet. However I've just fitted Storm STs to my Bandit 1250 on Wednesday and scrubbed the things to 1/2 inch of the edge in 22 miles in the dry. Last night went out and it pi$$ed it down, these new boots offer the best confidence of any tyre that I've ever used in the wet even without being completely scrubbed in. Astonishing! I had the predecessor Azaros when I had an SV which were great in the dry but no where near the grip of the Storm on the wet.

To be honset, i have a r1 and ride in all weather and have found the 208rrs totally great compared to others like bridgestone 020 and 014s.

That could have a lot to do with the fact that the 208RR is a supersports tyre, the 014 is a sports tyre and the 020 is a sport/touring tyre. They are all completely different tyres marketed to completely different sectors.

Lozzo
12-09-08, 09:22 PM
Any decent sports/touring tyre should be fine. Stick a supersports tyre on and you'll square it off in no time, put something rock solid and cheap on and it'll offer no grip in the wet. Quality sports/touring tyres offer the best compromise.

Michelin Pilot Road2, Pirelli Diablo Strada, Metzeler Z6, Avon Storms etc would be my choice - just avoid Dunlops of any flavour as they are all crap in the wet.

Lozzo

I always rated the wet weather performance of the old AV45/46ST, you reckon the Storms offer more? My mileage on Storms was mainly done in the dry and slightly damp conditions, so I didn't get to try them on proper rainy roads - I need some of those I think.

Don`t forget that the Storms also have puncture protection in the first 2mm of the Tyre as well :D

2mm? The AV45/46ST only had it on the first 1mm.

xXBADGERXx

It`s what I have been told , if the Avon or Storm logo wears out then the protection is gone . I could be wrong but 2mm is something that stuck in my mind .

I`ll go and find out for sure now .

No info on their site , but Round and Black Tyres do state that if you get a puncture in the 1st 1mm they will replace the tyre for free , so it looks like it`s 1mm . A small amount of piece of mind there , but we all know a mill won`t last long with most of these reprobates on here :D

Pilot Road 2's perfect for all weathers and all riding on the road. Mine happily sit on the edge in a corner and I get plenty of wet/cold weather grip. They also last well, 8K miles out of the last rear front is on 9K and looking good for a few more K still.

+1 Storms in the wet truly amazing. I had AV46/46 (Azarro) on the SV and they were very good, but Storms are in another class.
