I've just got a 'new' laptop from work. I've been busy clearing rubbish off it and it seems ok now but it was going a bit slow earlier. I right clicked properties on my computer and it said it only had a 512MHz processor. I re-started it and it is mostly back to 1.7Ghz but a couple of times it was lower.

Can anyone explain this?

Basically when you arnt using the full power of the CPU it clocks back... runs slower so it uses less power. If you start doing something that requires more CPU power it will speed up to meet the need. :D

Hmmmn. I thought it may have been because the power lead came loose (it's a bit rubbish) but the laptop is pretty old.

Suppose it must have been that. I'll pull out the cable and have a look to see what happens.

Cheers fellas.

How come I couldn't force it to happen with the laptop on battery only and it just happened with the power lead in?

Perhaps you have a power saving profile setup for when you are on battery to make it last longer?
