Hi,
I have been on here for just a short time now but have started to notice that a few of us on here are/were in the Armed Forces. I am just curious to see who is, what rank, what service, and what regiment/squadron/corps we have on here?
I was in the RAF, had been for 20 years. I was a loadmaster on retirement at RAF Lyneham (C130 Hercules) as a Flight Sargeant in 47sqn. I have also in my career worked at RAF Benson with the Pumas of 33sqn and at RAF Odiham with the Chinooks of 18sqn and 27sqn.

My dad has been in the RAF for almost 30years.
Since I was born we have lived in the following places:
1984 RAF Leuchers
1984-1988 Raf Wildenwrath
1988-1990 RAF Sculthorpe (West Raynham)
1990-1992 RAF Wyton
1992-1996 RAF Laarbruch
1996-present RAF Wyton
Years might be a little out as I cant remember for sure. My dad started out working on Phantoms then moved out to Laarbruch to work on Harriers in 4sq. Dont really know much of what he does now or even before but I loved being an Armed Forces Kid.
damn! ive always hated the idea of being in the forces! i couldnt deal with being told what to do, and im really not at all patriotic.

Interesting to know there are so many of us on here.
I believe me and Dangerous Dave may have met before, with 47sqn (C130) I did a lot of SF insertions and when I was in 18sqn I did a lot of pick-ups (RIB into Chinook). What do you think DD?

Good fun that, I will admit it is a bit nerve racking to begin with but then the adrenaline takes over. Would you happen to of crewed on one of the two that got lost, sat in a freezing ocean waiting for them.
Was it scary doing the things you did?
The scariest thing would be combat, it is not something you can train for fully. You never know what is happening or what is going to happen, it is also nothing near what it is like in the movies. Bullets flying over your head, mortars going off all around you and sometimes the best thing to do is not move.
The most scariest thing I have ever seen, a RAF Harrier commencing a strafing run after already dropping a bomb on our position despite us breaking radio silence to identify ourselves. Yes we were in a place designated hostile territory and where no friendlies were, but we passed the call sign and still he came back!

I got to run to level 10 on the bleep test... speaking of which the damn speeds have gone up, im sure when I first joined the first couple of levels were slow walk, they are now a jog!

Can you not get some insoles to raise your arch in your trainers? If you go to the med centre they should be able to refer you and this way you can get some made especially for you. A couple of my friends did this and it made things easier for them. In the meantime see if you can get some insoles that will raise your arch. I am not sure where you can get them from though, sorry. I am sure others might be able to assist you though :D

Aye its hard work now... It did used to be a walk the first two levels right!? it isnt me having a bad memory right? We have to do it twice a year or every 6 months YAY. So still got to do it twice more before im out :(

No you do not have a bad memory :). Yeah it used to be pretty lame for the first four levels at least, sounds like you are starting at level four now though . Do painkillers help? Even if just to get you through it? Just think that you only have to get to level 10 and job done :D.

Yeap, many people do this and it seems to work for them. As already mentioned the Med Centre will help you out with that.

Isn't the RAF at a walking pace behind everybody else anyway??? ;) :p
I'm 27 and in the RAF. I have to run to level 9.10 in the bleep test. We start from level 0 as we always have done. The levels have gone up recently. This time last year I only needed level 8.10. Not that 9.10 is massively difficult though. The last one I ran I kept running just to beat a baby officer who was trying to prove that he was fitter than his troops. Poor lad was knackered by level 12:D

I think the new start is = to what used to be level 4, its about that pace but we still go to 9.10 as head said... thing is one shuttle more is level 10... so its pretty much level 10... why I said that.

Im happy that you are a good runner. :)
With me being stocky (not fat, muscular) and small 5' 6" and get pain from shin splints im pretty crap at running, probably because I don't do much running due to the pain. I can push press ups out till the cows come home though. I did 70 in 50 seconds last time...
Why the RAF associates fitness with running a shed load of shuttles I don't know. I cant say as I've had to do any running to do with my job other than for the blasted fitness test. tsh.

Did you have Flat feet when you joined up? If so WTF did they let you in for??
Now i am not saying you dont suffer from Shin splints but in my experiance people dont understand them and use them as an excuse for bing cr*p at running and used by malingerers to get out of PT, not saying you are doing that though. As they are usualy caused by over exersising rather than just appearing from the start.
Also its a muscular problem that in most cases gently increasing the ammount of exersise in stages and stretching will ensure you dont suffer from them. As will avoiding to much tarmac and hard surface running. I have genuinly had them once in my Army career, they lasted about 2 weeks and i just rested and stretched and got back into running gently. They have never come back. A lot of people get a slight pain in their legs during exersise and cry off claiming shin splints.
TBH you sound like you have the wrong attitude to be in the Forces regarding fitness. The Fitness test in all 3 services is designed to showa BASIC leval of all round fitness, which includes CV, and as such can only be maesured by testing a CV exersise such as runing:rolleyes:. Be that the MSFT or the 1.5mile timed run, which i prefer TBH.
Surely you signed up knowing fintess would be involved?? And yes recently the RAF has bought its fitness closer in line to that of the Army. IMO about time as well.
All serving people need to havea certain leval of fitness regardles of trade or job due tosome of the situations we could find ourselfs in.
Now i dont claim to be the fittest in the world, infact i am not. However i am resoanbly fit can do the mile and a half in probably 9min 30 which i think is ok at almost 30 . I have to train at it to keek fit but accept that it is part of my job and get on with it rather than bleet about not needing to be fit to do my job. Right now in this post it could be as you clainm that i dont need to be fit, i sit at a PC all day. However my next posting will probably see me back in the proper field army on tour and needing to be fit. Hence i keep a good alround basic leval of fitness up now.
I singed on the line take the money and accept i need to keep my side of the deal up by being ready to do any job the Army ask of me now and in the future.

Yes it isn't good when anyone has shin splints. I have never had them but do know people who have and have been in pain with them and find it a struggle when running etc... Fitness is very different in the RAF to the Army, I take it you are a gym person weights etc... rather than a runner. Most people I know in the RAF just turn up at the bleep test on the day and pass without any problems or any prior training :).
Good luck :D

the MSFT or the 1.5mile timed run, which i prefer TBH.
The trouble with the 1.5 miler is that it also tests your ability as a middle distance runner. Some people inevitably c*ck it up by going off too fast. Or not fast enough. The MSFT is uncockupable. :)
I kept running just to beat a baby officer who was trying to prove that he was fitter than his troops.
Perhaps you'd prefer your officers to just quit at the bare minimum pass point? I know who I'd rather go into battle with.

No longer a valid excuse, plus all the services have been short of staff for many years now. All our lot are long servers with real experience.
the RAF has bought its fitness closer in line to that of the Army. IMO about time as well.
+1, now lets bring the Armys up.

+1, you should be ready for what is around the corner and not what is happening now. Some aspects of the services need to be on constant readiness, you can't take a month off of your fitness regime.
I singed on the line take the money and accept i need to keep my side of the deal up by being ready to do any job the Army ask of me now and in the future.
+ 1, well apart from the Army bit.

I dont know why they let me in... perhaps they are that desperate that they just let anyone in these days... I dont know. LOL
The shins usually start playing up at about the 5 mins of running stage, I can run through it but it feels like some thwait it cracking my shins with a bat every step, not so great. :( So unfortunatly there is no way to properly ease myself back into running.
Also its a muscular problem that in most cases gently increasing the ammount of exersise in stages and stretching will ensure you dont suffer from them. I still do the training, but we dont have compulsory PT like you do so I can do what I like which is mostly the bike and the rower both of which I can do for a long time. :) No pain YAY!
TBH you sound like you have the wrong attitude to be in the Forces regarding fitness. I am getting out, so maybe you are right. IMO getting to level 10 on the bleep test is much harder than the 1.5 mile run, the turns Grrr hate them. Also on the run you can choose your own pace and generally start faster finish slower where on the bleep test its pre set speeds and it gets faster.
What pressups do you have to do? Isnt it 35 in 2 min? We have 20 in one min. Id say ours was harder there too. Not that doing either amount should take more than 30 seconds...
Dont get me wrong i think there should be fitness in the forces but I think it should be a little more individually based. Expecting me to be able to run as well as someone who is a lanky 6'+ is stupid yet they do. Also why is it that ladies have to do so much less, is it that bullets dont chase them as well as Blokes so they dont have to run as far? If them getting to level 6 is good enough then me getting to level 6 should be good enough! Equal ops and all that?
Surely you signed up knowing fintess would be involved?? And yes recently the RAF has bought its fitness closer in line to that of the Army. IMO about time as well.

Aye. im glad you enjoy it, you seem to be the typical type that enjoys all the crap that comes with the job and enjoys making everyone else feel unworthy by saying we should love the core. I for one dont enjoy the poor pay the being treat like a prisoner, which is how it feels often and being treat like a child at school... Id love to say the money was worth it but it isnt, my brother who is 2 years younger is on twice my wage and he doesnt have to put up with this rubbish.
Cheers, rant over :p

The shins usually start playing up at about the 5 mins of running stage, I can run through it but it feels like some thwait it cracking my shins with a bat every step, not so great. :( So unfortunatly there is no way to properly ease myself back into running.
I still do the training, but we dont have compulsory PT like you do so I can do what I like which is mostly the bike and the rower both of which I can do for a long time. :) No pain YAY!
Id love to know when ill be needed to run? Chase sheep about maybe?
Aye. im glad you enjoy it, you seem to be the typical type that enjoys all the crap that comes with the job and enjoys making everyone else feel unworthy by saying we should love the core.
Ha ha yes they do tend to let almost anyone in nowadays, some are keen and green and some are not. I think the majority are not and join up for a trade and security rather than the green stuff and most stay in as they will get a decent wage, good pension, cheap living and not be affected by redundancy etc...
With your quals and experience you are most definitely sure to find a job that is more than twice your current wage :D.
However Neio is, very disciplined in his training regime especially as he doesn't have organised PT as in a normal working unit so does well to keep up his level of fitness. It is hard for anyone to drag themselves out for a run or to the gym when they could easily just sit there and surf the net instead. Having run with Neio I can say his fitness level is pretty good :D
When I left the RAF in 86 I had to have a leaving medical, apparently I had flat feet, a heart murmur and was apparently too short to have been in the mob in the first place, makes you think dunnit ?

Which is good I cant deny! I almost always go to the gym for 30 mins to an hour a day but ill still struggle through the run :(
The thing is the people who are ok/good at running, the kind that almost naturally can run the fitness test that put those of us who cant down wouldnt like it if it went from a running fitness test to a strength test. People who are crap at weights would moan same as I am now. :p
How I would run it if I could would be a points system. So right this guy can get level 12 so that gets him 120 points, can do 20 press ups so that gets him 40 points and can do 40 situps, that gets him 40 points. Anything over 160 points is a pass. Then I can do it without having to kill myself on the run as I can rely on my strenght to pass.
Bah. Not to worry.

Yes I am much better at running and only do light weights. You have shin splints so may never realise your running capabilities due to the pain regardless of the fact that you prefer weights and other gym work. The points system is not a bad idea IMHO although others may disapprove LMAO  ;) Anyway you only have 2 more to do and that's it no more :D bet you can't wait and to earn all that money

Apart from the fact theyre a bit short, no not really, I only foiund out for defo I had flat feet when I had to visit a sports injury clinc ansd was told Id need orthotics in my shoes if I ever wanted to run without injury.

I agree just as long as it is used under the correct circumstances, i.e. you don't want someone that can't run or walk if your unit spends a lot of time on a yomp do you?

You will definitely earn more than that in Civvy street esp with your quals and now that you have some experience under your belt :D but I would keep an eye on the job situation as it isn't look so great out here at the moment...

Indeed, if you like your job it doesn't always make sense in walking away from it. Although some do like to leave on a high note and for others there might be some other reason that makes them leave.

LOL funniest thing i have read so far. RAF fitter than the ARMY. The MSFT is a piece of pi%% a fookinn joke replacement for the 1.5mile run, which is actually 2 given the warm up and use to be (and still should be IMO)3miles with 1.5 as a squad as a warm up and 1.5 best effort.
Leval 10 on the MSFT is not any more demanding on the body, infact i would say given there is no wind or weather to take into account its eaiser.
Actually i think you wil find the Army pressups is 45 in 2 min below the age of 30, so still a higher standard than the crabs. and for info the sit ups are 50 in 2 min for 30 and below and under 10.30 for the best effort 1,5 mile run.
That second bit just wound me up to be fair, You have to do more as you are a bloke!! although your bleeting about how its unfair you have to do the mean and nasty fitness test has me wondering. Females are given more time due to the bloomin obvious general lower leval of physical endurance. Most but not all cases. I know some very fit females who TBH blow me away with their standard of fitness.

A lot of Civi's see us as thugs, apparently all we do is go out and pick fights.
If they knew that virtually every day of the year an operative is on a routine patrol or surveillance objective to defend their country would they see us any different? No. 365 days a year the UK has four teams on alert, 50% of the service will be available on a moments notice in support as well.
I swore to protect my country, and this is what people think of us!

Thats the problem we dont/rarely seem to fight to protect the UK anymore do we? We go into countries half way around the world and mess around because of some unknown reason... whatever the reason the PM is kicking around at the time. This for some reason makes the general public thinks its our doing. They dont realise we cant do anything about what happens and what we have to do.

You can’t cope with the RAF fitness with out hurting your fanny, so what hope have you with the Armys??
You sound very bitter with the RAF, and TBH not suited to the forces at all. If you cant cope with the RAF way of life thank fook you did not join the Army, you would be crying yourself to sleep every night.
When did you join up? As you sound quite junior, If it was post 2003 you really have no excuse to moan about being sent to places that don’t concern the UK. You joined up knowing full well where you could go.
I have been to your station on a project we worked on and although it is in the ar*e end of no where, its so tiny and with so few people the bullsh*t cant be that much, If you cant cope with it there god help you if you had to go to TCW.
This all may sound harsh , but you really are not the sort of person who should be in the Forces by the sound of it. Maybe its just a bad experience that has made you like it or maybe you are just not cut out for it. But I am sure not all flying stations are like that place , an d I doubt many work shifts like yours in your trade.

Exactly, remember London got bombed because the PM agreed to fight with the Americans in Afghanistan.
The first armed military unit to touch Afghan soil was the SBS, dropped in via C130 and spent weeks doing reconnaissance and cave searching. These two teams remained in Afghan for 273 days straight, we got one hell of a sun tan but did we seal the fate of the British Armed Forces? There are fresh soldiers out there dying, no offence to the Army people on here but you are not trained to do half the stuff your commanders except of you. The H&K updated SA80 is still pants, an excellent design on paper but it isn't good enough for front line fighting.
