Hi
I'm looking at some boots by a brand I quite like, fit me lovely and I quite like the styling. They do a 'WR' version of their boot which I assume stands for water repellant () it's £100 and comes with a year waterproof guarantee (but if they are no good all they'll do is keep replacing them with more crap boots). But they also do a goretex version at £165, is goretex really that good? Should I go for them. They'll be my only pair of boots winter and summer so they need to be 100% waterproof and preferably breathable to avoid trenchfoot which goretex supposedly offers and I've heard good stuuf about it.
Any thoughts appreciated
Dave

How long (distance & time) and often will you be using your bike in the winter? Justify that with what you are paying. I've never been let down by my non-Goretex boots even when raining, but they are pretty fooked now after some good miles in them.

Wet feet are damn miserable. In summer they just are a pain. At last years AR I had to surgically remove the failed waterproof lining (looked like bin bags) to let the water back out. I now have new boots.
But in winter. Wet feet freeze. Frost bite is not nice. the wind chill of being on a bike speeds up the time needed for the frost bite to start. For an extra 65 quit. yes it is worth it.

My bikes my sole transport really. The odd week or weekend I'll have a work van but otherwise it's my only wheels as my car won't be built til summer 09 atleast.

For a better cheaper solution I run my Oxtar Titanium boots with a gortex sock inside. Keeps the wind and rain off and I get more feel from the bike than I would from an awkward hugepair of clod hopping boots. and they look great. Socks can be changed but boots can't. catch my drift

What socks have you got?
I was thinking of getting some sealskins, got some sealskin gloves for walking etc and they are pretty good

I've got some Oxtar Goretex boots..really light and comfortable. Had them 2 years now and they are starting to look a little beat up as they get used most days. Kept my feet dry yesterday 65 miles in pouring rain in the morning, and 65 miles in pouring rain, plus loads of standing water in the evening.
Don't remember them being expensive though.
