View Full Version : Driving licence in date?
So, there I was scanning an old copy of the Daily Star what I found lurking around when I saw a small report about driving licences going out of date and people being fined up to a thousand ponds bla de blah.
So I went for a surf and...well...seems like the the new photo stylee driving licence is now a licence to print money every ten years - see link..

Basically, as I understand it, you must renew the Photo every ten years at a cost of £17.50. Outrageous I say, outrageous.

Count yourself lucky, diabetics and other such blights on humanity have to renew ours every 3 years.
There was a thread on this before...
(P.S. KG, You just reminded me - and I'm at home, not work - excuse me whilst I nip to the post office).

:? Why?
The only reason I can see for renewing a licence is for the photo to be updated.
edit// your updates are free, so says the link :)

Yup it is outrageous, I dont see why you should have to pay to get a new style licence.
I would understand if my exisiting licence got lost / damaged or if I had re-taken a test to prove im still a competent driver...
Ive got a few years until mine expires so plenty of time to start saving :p

Just had to pay £17.50 for mine too. Factor in the cost of getting some passport size photos done & then posting the thing by recorded delivery (cos you can count on the DVLA to lose the sodding thing!) and it's more like £25.
Robbing bar stewards!

It's a hell of a lot cheaper than a passport, and people don't seem to think that renewing that every 10 years is so outrageous.

As Kilted Ginger has pointed out, diabetics (like me) have to renew every three years, however, its free :)
I believe the reasoning is to ensure you're still fit to drive / ride. They just write to your doctors who say "yeah, he's been a good boy, I'd trust him not to collapse / screw up more than anyone else". Much in the same fashion they do for the pensioners with driving licenses.
I should really see if I can get my photo updated next time :)

But a passport is a means of verifying your identity, therefore a valid photo is a normal expectation.
Your driving licence is a means of verifying your driving entitlement (OK as a bonus it would be good if it was easy to prove that it was yours ;)) so the photo is secondary it's also a new requirement only introduced 10 yrs ago so people aren't used to it yet.

Why on earth is it, i think, £75 or thereabouts. I think the ID card scheme if it replaces passport, driving licence etc would be a good deal.

You're right, 10 years isn't very long for people to get used to the new system is it. ;)
Exactly, the first renewals are only now ;)

Of course it wouldn't be a good deal. It'll cost far more than the £75 + £17.50 you pay for your passport/drivers licence.
