View Full Version : MRI scans
Howdy all.
I've my appointment booked for my MRI scan on my shoulder this Wednesday.
I know it involves dye injected into the muscle and wotnot., but I was wondering is it a bit of a bugger?
Better to take the bus to the hospital rather than bike? I did hear a mention of local anaesthetic!
Ta very much!

I`ve had 2 MRI`s done on my hip..... i had dye injected into my hip on the second one and they used a local anaesthetic. I got a lift and didn`t drive which I was glad about as it felt quite uncomfortable. I also had a lot of numbness in that area and it felt as if my leg was gonna give way so i`d say use the bus cos you can`t guarantee how you`re gonna feel afterwards. Good luck

Oof. Sorry to hear you felt a bit rubbish afterwards.
I've booked the day off work just to make sure.
I'm having it in Broad Green. Shame as I live a short walk from the Royal! I think Broad Green is the place for that kind of thing though.

Good luck.

I was fine, had a small burn on the other hand as i forgot to take off my reading band and the metal bit burnt me .... GHAY!
I was physicaly fine but they say you can feel abit under the weather for upto 48 hours.
Just get some good sleep and food, drink lots of water and you shold have no problems.

Oh well. At least I can sit with a dead arm instead of being in work!
P.S Is there a lot of heat involved? Enough to burn your hand???

I'll return to this thread later and go into geek mode. Oh, MRI, you are so lovely
it's really, of course, NMRi
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging
I heard they avoid using the word 'Nuclear' as to not make people sh*t themselves??

NEEEEK !
No no, no heat involved unless you have metal in or on you ( big magnets pullig on the metal would cause it to heat up), which is why u take your stuff off.
The worst bit is going into the tube....SCARY AS HELL, and the 1st noise is abit arhh, but i fell asleep in mine as it take around 15-20 mins.
Tomorrow u'll wonder why you ever worried.
Brock.
Ah right!
I was told they use a handheld device to do the scan. Hmm...

Nope....... not if it`s a proper MRI. You lie in what I can only describe as a small tunnel. It`s quite claustrophobic and they also give you headphones to listen to music and drown the loud noise out. I also fell asleep during mine!
There`s no way you should get burnt and the staff there should make sure that you remove all jewellery etc. The next day my hip still felt a bit "tight" but other than that I was fine and went back to work.
Not sure how it is at Broadgreen..... I had one done at Fazakerley after which they referred me to Wrightington near Parbold tho the MRI was done at Wigan.

My MRI scan sounded like shotguns going off either side of my head , I was jumping at each sound (not surprising after being hit by a car with a similar sounding noise) and got told off and to keep still . I just closed my eyes and waited for it to end . All metal should be removed , especially piercings and whatnot . There is a video on YouTube where somebody left a Metal Chair in the same room as the scanner when it was switched on . Man that thing was stuck to the tunnel and it took a humongous effort to prise it off :D

Yer they should check... i even asked for scissors but nooo she knew best and put tape around the metal tag.
There is a hand held bit that you press if you want out.
As everone says nothing to worry about just abit noisey.
Tell us how it goes though.

When I had a nuclear scan, they used the word 'nuclear' a lot. They even had a geiger counter there.
There's quite a difference between a nuclear scan and a normal MRI scan. I've had both. For the nuclear scan, they inject you with a radioactive substance first. It's a simple injection and didn't hurt. For a normal MRI scan there are no injections and you go into a full-body scanner (as described by Speedy Claire. I found that very relaxing and just meditated in it. It was playing Hawkwind though loudspeakers inside, which I really didn't expect. They must have looked at me and thought 'hippy'! You need to remove all of your jewellery, piercings etc before a MRI scan, because of the strong magnetic fields inside it.
