View Full Version : Banks Encouraging Debt - WTF?
<rant>:smt091:smt091
I had to go to the bank earlier to get a few quid out for the possible purchase of a new bike.
While I was in there the woman wasn't being too discreet about counting the money out and giving it to me, which bearing in mind it was a few quid and the bank was packed was a bit disconcerting.
Anyway, after she had given me the money she gave me my bank card back with a little business card type thing and stated to me that this is illustrating how much money I can borrow on an unsecured loan if I want one. The amount was £24,600 or something like that.
She also said that it was available to me today if I wanted to go and see someone. I just said no thanks and went on my way.
I had not gone in there to borrow money and none of my accounts are currently in O/D yet they are trying to get me to take a massive loan.
That's just out of order, if I had been someone who was feeling the pinch a bit more I could've been tempted into taking a loan that I could ill afford to pay back. That's just out of order.
The same bank 'Barclays' also recently sent a letter saying that all accounts with O/D facilities were being given an additional buffer, can't remember the sum nor the terms attached, but it was down to the individual to opt out, which we had to do.
This kind of selling is IMO totally out of order in times like this.

Debt is how banks make money, of course they want you to take out a loan
If you went into a bike dealership cash-in-hand ... they would still ask you if you wanted to get on HP ... why?!!?!? ... coz that is how they make money
Yeah I hate banks with a vengeance. They are all vultures.
I realise that is how banks work, but to actually do that is wrong......

It's just advertising. Are Suzuki encouraging debt by offering 0% deals and tempting you by having bikes in the window? Is tesco encouraging you to be fat by selling pork pies?

'possible' purchase of a bike? ;)
I agree with the Apester on this. They are all greedy vultures.

Did I say that out loud? lol......
totally outrageous that banks continue to offer banking services in this day and age!
They should all be closed down forthwith.
none of my accounts are currently in O/D you look like a prime candidate for someone who can repay the loan (given the limited info available)yet they are trying to get me to take a massive loan.

If they're offering you £24K unsecured I would imagine they have history of a good income going into your multiple accounts ;)

Do I know what you've got your eye on???
Can't see the problem here.

Barclays have created the reserve to get smart about their overdraft charges. Lots of people were claiming back charges for going OVER their overdraft limit, citing that it was the banks fault for physically letting their accounts go over the set limit, and not bouncing the payments. (more non-responsibility culture!)
They have now formalised that procedure... obviously in their favour. You used to get charged £10 per transaction up to £30/month. Now you get charged £22 for every 5 days you are in the reserve. Note... if you are over your limit for a month barclays now get £88 instead of £30, and no-one can sue them for 'unjust' charges because it is in the T&C's and you can opt-out.

Well the credit crunch is all about the banks refusing to lend, so if you get a good offer of credit you're doing well 8)

Thats how the banks got into trouble in the first place. I couldnt get a loan for just £900 when I was going for my second car back in the 80's, left it 6 months after the government relaxed some rule or other and all the banks were trying to throw money at me even though I knew I could not afford it.
Almost every time I call the bank now I am offered an immediate loan which I refuse. If I want something now, I wait and look out for the best offers. My SV was purchased with 0% after the deal direct from Suzuki had finished, I was about to walk when the dealer called me a back, made a phone call and the deal was done.
I dont see the problem, yes they have offered you a loan, but they can see you have money and can afford it. I know people with £1m plus in the bank but they will take out a loan to buy a new car because the interest on the loan is less than the interest he is earning on the money that is sat in high interest accounts.
If someone was feeling the pinch they wouldnt get offered a loan in the first place.
New bike ey ;)
Look forwards to the post about it :D

Just read the rest of the thread, CBR600RR, from what I've heard is supposed to be the 'best' new 600 but I think they're all much of a muchness and it's personal preference and the best deal really isn't it?! :compress:

Nice bike mate...
Lovely that mate, somtimes I wish I had held out for a new shape as its really growing on me now.....although I think I would worry about taking it on the track so much as parts are still few and far between and therefore expensive :(
You going to be taking it on the track?
Is tesco encouraging you to be fat by selling pork pies?
Yes, the evil bastids...
If you ever wondered where money comes from... 96% of all money in UK circulation is debt. More debt, more money.

Hope you're not sleeping in the garage tonight!
You going to be taking it on the track?
I'd like to but it is mainly a commuter tool for me - I love it!
Man it makes me feel like the day I first got on my SV, but a very different beast.
Ed - No garage and the driveway was a bit uncomfortable and cold last night.
