View Full Version : Hylomar sealant usable at valve-covers? (& grease question)

Hi all,

Planning tappet clearance check and manual states one should put some "Suzuki bond" at the cam-end caps of the oem gaskets. I wonder if I can use Hylomar blue here. Hylomar is on a polyurethane basis and might be very sticky. Someone used it before? Can it be removed easily on next cover-removal?

Also planned to regrease swingarm & linkage bearings. Castrol L(ythium)M apparently used a lot here. But is this grease compatible with originally packing of the Koyo bearings? I remember having read smwhere the oem packing is with a polyurea-thickener based grease, might be incompatible with lithium thickener based grease.
I wonder how to best remove oem grease from bearings then (without removing them!). Clean out with brake cleaner & let dry or sth?

Don't need sealant. Use paraffin to remove old grease and repack with LM.

Does the paraffin kind of absorb the old grease then?

Yeah wash it out, petrol be right too.

How do i get rid of the paraffin/petrol then? Just let it evaporate? (I have no pressair :(). What do you think of brakecleaner, it evaporates faster than petrol (I suppose petrol is what we call diesel fuel here?).

Diesel fuel? Wha? No sir, petrol is the go-juice you pour in the tank...

Parrafin is sometimes refered to as kerosene. Brake cleaner should be alright too, but might degrade the rubber seals. I'd use parafin worked in properly with a rag repeatedly (into the needles) then a squirt of brake cleaner to wash out the parafin, dry out quicker that way.

Ok then. I think I'll just use diesel-fuel. This is what I use to clean o-ring chains too, it doesn't attack rubber (like "benzine" or UK-petrol will do :) )

Thanks for helping me out.

Yeah diesel will be right. Get it all outbefore greasing it though

Sorry to hijack this thread, but can I not use LM grease without cleaning the old grease out? I intended to wipe them with a lint free cloth and then use LM grease.

Well if the grease left over in the bearing uses a thickener which is Lithium-incompatible, bad things can happen.

Does it though? And if so where can I get a compatible grease?

Very good question. Depends on what grease is oem-packed with the bearings. Mostly Koyo bearings. I've been trying to find out but didn't succeed. So I will try to clean out all left grease in swing/link bearings with brakecleaner/"wasbenzine" and then apply new (Lithium) grease.

Just clean out old grease. You really need to as it will probably have very fine rust in it.
