I had a most excellent time. Pete & Debs sure know how to host guests. Just a shame we couldn't have gone for longer. The drive from Newbury - Dover - Calais to St Servant was a bitch though. It's a long way when your limited to 80mph.

The motorways have tolls. If you speed between the tolled area's you will be fined on the spot and the fines are steep. The ticket you get as you go through the toll is time stamped and checked at the other end. If you get to the other end before a certain time, they know you have been speeding.

If you ever do the trip again you could always use these guys: http://www.brittany-ferries.co.uk/routes/portsmouth-caen

That way you could get the ferry direcly to St Malo

Or cane it down the motorway until you reach the toll booth, stop just short and have a fag to kill some time  Not that you smoke of course Si.

For me the over riding point was the cost. I worked out all possible routes, timings and costs.

The Dover - Calais crossing was the cheapest (including taking fuel into account) and also the timings worked out best. I had to keep in mind that our hosts were waiting for us, so couldn't really turn up too late.

Poppycock. I hear this one every time anyone mentions driving or riding in France, but it's simply not true: there's no time synchronisation between gates so they can't check your speed in this way.

What can (and does) happen is they sit by the side of the péage and zap you as you go by, make a note of your plate, and radio ahead. Then when you come off at one of the exits, if you're unlucky enough for there to be frogplod waiting at the exit in question, they check your plate and if it's on the list, you're nicked. I've seen them checking plates in exactly that way on past runs to France.

But the timed ticket thing is pure rumour. We've done this one to death on UKRM (not quite as UK as the name may suggest) numerous times.

Have to agree based on my own experience of the toll roads. Was doing 100mph minimum on the M'ways and never got a ticket at the toll booth. Always pays to be careful when driving/riding in another country mind which perhaps is the moral of the myth.

or just go to bosnia where they can't be bothered to fine you if you play the dumb tourist card

Makes sense to me. Especially as I saw exactly that. I thought he was being collared because of his ticket. It must have been that bloke with the camera hiding under the bridge a short while back. I was told about the distance and speed thing by someone I thought would have known it to be fact. Oh well.
