View Full Version : Rideout Of The Stuartyboy weekend away- new and improved
northwind

Since Stuarty's vanished, thought I'd better get the ball rolling on this. This is the same rideout as we did last year, which was absolutely ace, good roads and RUBBISH pubs but it all worked out a charm. So we should do it again. With less fire and exhausts falling off obviously.
So get voting! No real plans for accomodation yet, because we need numbers first, but the bunkhouse worked last year and seems to still have spaces. Or we could do something else. It's all good. I've put the dates as the 18th and the 25th since these were the ones we were looking at in the other thread, we can be flexible on that but we need to get a move on, I'm not doing this route in December!
Route suggested is:
"Start Kinross Services....11am
Glenfarg road
Into Perth and bypass the riverside
Head along Blairgowrie road past Scone Palace
All the way up to the turn off for Dunkeld
Head to Dunkeld for a stop chat.
Dunkeld to Blairgowrie via the butterstone road - awesome road
Blairgowrie to Glenshee
Stop at Spittal of Glenshee for refreshments
Head up to Braemar taking a left at Bridge of Gairn onto the Cockbridge Tomintoul road.
[I can do to here on my on in about 2 hours but rideouts with stops etc will slow this considerably.]
Stop at Boat of Garten or head into Aviemore. Stay over Aviemore for some flange and beer.
Day two
Aviemore to Spean Bridge. Stop for coffee blether
Spean Bridge to North Ballachuillish.
At North Ballachuillish we can peel off and go round the Kinlochleven loop which is wonderful - then join at ballachuillish.
Head from Balla toTyndrum Green well. We can stop off at a few places - Glencoe - that cool pub or the kings house.
From Green welly it's homeward bound.
We can peel off via the North Lochearn road (Easties)
or down into Calander for afternoon Scones then peel off. Dukes pass is optional. "
Eitherway - Calander or Lochearnhead can be the homeward bound stretch.

Well done that Mod!
I am in the rare and luxurious position of being able to vote either, so I have.
However, the guiding hand of Mrs Tiger hovers over the kitchen calendar, awaiting to set in stone such events as 'Hannah Montana Party 3-5pm' so the quicker we make our minds up the less likely either is to turn into neither. I am, as you would wish to be aware, mad for it.
PS - Flange? The extended inner edge of a railway wheel, which guides its path along the rails?

Stuarty's words. Though if I remember rightly, he was a bit more succesful in attracting young boys last year.

Hmm this all sounds like good fun but since the biggest ride out I've done since passing is 40 miles on local roads I think I'm gonna give this one a miss. Second weekend would have been great for me too cos my hubby is away traipsing up some hill or other for charideeee, bummer

Riding on your own you sit in the saddle for much longer than riding in a group 'cos you only stop when you need a drink/food/fuel/cigarette/toilet etc. Riding in a group as we never do more than 40 miles at a time without stopping, theres always somebody who needs to stop for some reason. A rideout that can be done in 90 minutes alone takes us lot the best part of 4-5 hours!
Come along, honestly you'll be surprised at how the time and miles pass, and you have massive help/support on hand to make going further from home less daunting.
Contemplating it is much harder than doing it! ;)
.......Anyway, after all that I'll check the dates with Mrs Ralph.
Would prefer the 25th, as I'm off all that week. We will be staying in a lighthouse in Gairloch for a few days before, so provided we survive the experience count me in. :D
Could do the 18th all the same.
....Rubbish pubs...
Found a good one recently..... Mambo's. Can't remember if we invaded it last year? Actually, i can't remember much about last year!!!!!

Don't be afraid of us! Riding in a group's the same for 40 or 400 miles, as long as you ride to your own skill and confidence it'll be fine. Plus, last year we got a bit wet on the way up, but honestly, the ride back was one of the best rides I've ever had, it was just awesome. There were bits on that road down from aviemore that felt like riding into the sky. And THEN ballachulish, as a main course. Awesome.

25th for me please, thats assuming I've had my 15K service done. Do we need to book the hostel?
I suppose we will need rough numbers before booking, but it's during the school break-up so it mite be best to do so pretty soon.

If it's happening on the 25th, Amanda will be along too as it might well be our last run of the year. Getting kinda chilly out up here by then. :smt085

Looks like the 25th to me then... But we need a few more people! Not ruling out the 18th but so far the 25th's getting better responses, plus it's an extra week away for booking.
Where is that Stuartyboy? Always on the scene when there's slaggin to be done...
Think I should be able to make the 25th.
Will be trying my hardest anyway. Anyone got any idea how much accommodation normally comes in at?

If we do the bunkhouse, it came in last year at about 6 quid a head.

Is this the winner of the name contest by the way?
Never mind I'll ask on the Aberdeen banter hotline so as to not hijack this thread.
It was cheap, but not SIX QUID cheap!!
The bunkhouse is £15 a head in the dorms.
I've just checked with the (slightly confusing) online booking service for the 25th Oct, and it's pretty full. :( We can't get a dorm to ourselves, just spare bunks in various dorms.
I'll see if there's anywhere else we could use.

I've checked half a dozen other options, not much luck really. But then...Ok, so I cocked up the online booking doofer at the bunkhouse website. Speaking to people is so much easier! :D
I've not booked but they DO have an 8 and a 6 bunk dorm available for us, on the 25th. Is that the date we are going for? I kinda had to make a heat of the moment decision, due to the 18th being filled up everywhere i checked. Soz folks.....
I don't want to take over Stuartyboys gig but if that's a yes then I'll need to get back to em asap with numbers so maybe now is the time for a list of definite attendees? Line up, line up, lol!

Well after getting the old map out and looking at the route I've decided to give this one a miss unfortunately. Thanks everyone for being so supportive and encouraging and I will get on another rideout sometime once I've got more miles under my belt. Although my confidence is coming on with every mile I do and I'm starting to feel really at home on the bike, I'm still suffering a bit with my muscles getting used to bike mode and my hands cramping up (prob cos I'm holding on far too tight haha). Hope you all enjoy, I look forward to seeing some pics :D

I'm still suffering a bit with my muscles getting used to bike mode and my hands cramping up (prob cos I'm holding on far too tight haha)
Haha indeed! Not sure if you know that your hand cramps are caused by holding on too tight, or if your just kidding about it without realising it's significance. Thought I'd mention it anyway, just in case it's the latter.
You have hit the nail dead on the the head. You have an SV650S Sport right? If so, this has clip on bars and holding on too tight is exactly what is causing your hand cramps!
Try going for a good long run on a straight country roads with a 60mph limit and not too twisty, sit up as straight as you can above the screen and into the windblast. This will cause the windblast on your shoulders/chest to lift the weight off your wrists and hands. Then loosen your grip on the bars, relax and ride!
Play around with changing position in the road and going round easy bends and see how easy it is to control the bike with very light inputs on the bars and not much squeezing on the grips at all.
Once your feeling confident you can make a circle ("OK" sign) with your forefinger and thumb and just let the grips rattle about between your forefinger and thumb and see how the bike just runs straight without you really holding on at all.
Hope that helps...
Hope we'll see you for the ice cream run to St Andrews (usually in November)

There were 2 dorms/14 bunks at the bunkhouse when I phoned last week. With BlueFlame in B&B, plus Amanda&me are in a twin room that means there are 11 bunks taken.
Ok, if I go ahead and book for everyone tomorrow or Sunday, is that ok? You can all just pay me back on the night, like last year.

Absolutely! Those on the definates list need to pay for their bunk if they have to drop out after the time of booking. Any shortfall gets covered by the rest of the group in a whip round.
Can't expect people to take on the responsibility of booking stuff for us for them to end up out of pocket.

KG had picked up arranging the route and the evening food so I'll pick that up.
Things are getting a bit lost in the two threads so I'll put a new one up soon with the necessary details, meeting points, time, more detailed route, etc.

Please don't post in the new thread. It's just for reference so you know where to find what you need quickly and easily. I'll edit it if more stuff needs addded in to it.
If you want to meet at my house and get breakfast please PM me and I'll reply with the address.
Please let me know if you want to eat at Roo's Leap on Saturday night
Please let me know if you would like to stop for fuel at Blairgowrie, otherwise you need to do 135 miles on one tank.
Anyone got any suggestions for lunch in Fort William on Sunday?

At the Spittal of Glenshee hotel? I though there might be, seemed to remember that from last time you, me and Stuarty were up there, but I wasn't 100% sure if I was getting confused with the Green Welly.

Hey Guys,
My "got something on Saturday morning" is still on, so it's a late departure and a drag up the A9 to Aviemore for me. I'll be there by 6. Tiger pm'd me his mobile number so I can get in touch on the day. Can someone else pm me their's so I've got a couple of contact numbers?
KG, It's sh!t that you can't make it.
-Ralph-, I'll take a place at Roo's Leap if you're booking it.
Take it easy,
Fred
Ralph, thanks for doing the definitive guide to what could be the best SV ecosse end of season rideout since the last one, last year, doing much the same things, in the same order. :o
As combatfred said, if you're looking for numbers eating at Roo's, it's +3 from the wild west. I can taste that joey steak already.
:( KiltedG, what a bugger you're not free to go anymore. Feel free to give your bro 'what for' from the org.
Have fun guys and gals - i'll be being dragged round Glasgow by my neice trying to find something for her birthday

It'd be better not to depend on petrol at the spittal tbh, last 2 times I've been there they were out... Plus Tony just about made that poor lassie cry last time :D Recurring theme for the weekend...

Also please let me know if you'll need to stop for fuel at Blairgowrie, thats for those with a tank range that won't comfortably do 135 miles after filling up at Kinross, or if your not comfortable trying to find out...
An SV will be fine unless you've got a problem or a leak, or you've made some serious mod's! If you've got a small tank (ie:supermoto, etc) or something with a short range (ie: Honda Firestorm, etc), don't risk it.

Hi,
Last year I put together a contact list of moby numbers and emergency contact moby numbers. I still have that list so for this year's attendees I have Haggis, Ralph & Northy's details if they are still the same.
I can pull this together for all the attendees so if you are ok with providing the data then PM me your details. I would not intend to share the details out with everybody but if a couple of peeps (Ralph and myself?) have the data we should be covered.
I'm away down south today but I will collate it all together on Thursday when I get back.
Data I would be looking for is:-
Org Name
Real Name
Mobile Number
Emergency Contact Name
Emergency Contact Number
& a secondary emergency contact name and number if you want.

GRRRRRRAAAARRRGGGHH!!!! Went to dig the bike out for my IAM training yesterday morning to discover the back tyre flat as a pancake, flat as in - 0psi.
That might be the nail in the coffin for me, I was just about Ok (funds wise, what with with that lovely little fine to pay,) but another £100 for a rear tyre the week before PayDay might kill me off I'm afraid. I'll need to see, but obviously I'll square up my room costs etc if I can't make it.
have a great time guys, it was brilliant last year

If you want a lend of a tyre I've got a worn 020 out the back, handy for such occasions ;) If you can get the bike or the wheel up to Edinburgh tomorrow or wednesday I can whack it on for you. Or I could have a crack at patching it for you, but bear in mind I've never done it before, and you might die...

The run sounds brilliant. Unfortunately, as I have just come across this forum (had the SV for 5 years) as I am looking for a new front wheel, I canny go! Maybe some other time. I will be keeping an eye out. Hope you have a great week-end.
