does anybody know where to get a good cheap battery? i have been quoted £72 at our place down the road and i refuse to pay that much.

please can somebody tell me where i can get one much cheaper and what battery i have to get? also is there any other batteries that would work?

splash £20 extra on a decent one (varta et al) and maintain it with an optimate and it'll last longer than the bike...

No need. just ride the bike.

My experience is described here:

http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=83459

In the end I paid £61.98 including delivery. And, I think,
the battery I bought is pretty good.

we can't all commute though

with 3 bikes in the garage the SV can go 3/4 weeks without use even in the middle of summer, in winter it could be longer;)

Cheapest best one I found (once you factor in postage etc) was genuine suzuki.

Honda dealers often have very competitive prices on Yuasa,
YTZ10S will drop straight in a curvey, 12/14 need tray removed I believe. Don't know about pointies.
YTZ10S is better spec than std battery for SV650

YTZ10 is ace... Wee bit more expensive than stock but well worth it. All you need to do to fit the 12 is take out the fusebox retainer, which is a pain in the bum anyway ;) but the 10 is still a good upgrade. Embee convinced me to buy one ages ago, it's been totally flat half a dozen times since, but always recovered so far, and it'll start the bike in any conditions- I dug it out of snow once and it still started

There's a Varta equivalent which can be got very cheaply, but I don't know if it's as good.

what do you mean by 12/14?

I believe that'd be Amp / Hours. A measurement of the total charge the battery can hold. Standard is 10, 12 and 14 are, well, more ;)

I believe for bikes one of the most important characteristics of a battery is the Cold Cranking Amps, as in the number of amps it can deliver in one hit from cold to turn the motor over, this affects how well it provides that first lump of current to the starter motor and explains why a good quality 10Amp/Hr battery can start the bike better than a poor quality battery with the same total capacity.

ok so would the ytx9-bs be ok? it says 8000mah

You don't want a battery with less capacity than standard (which I think is actually 9ah in both cases despite the name), that's barely adequate as it is. Like Jambo said check the CCA, an SV's quite hard to turn over so draws a lot.

Sorry, a bit of shorthand there.

YTZ10S fits directly in the curvey battery box and is pretty much the same height as the std item so the fuse tray goes in fine.
The YTZ12S and YTZ14S are physically the same size, slightly taller than a 10, and the fuse tray won't fit, but you can get away without it by sorting the placing of the fuse blocks with some imagination.

The 12 and 14 are similar specs but they trade off amp-hours (capacity) for staring current (CCA) depending on what the bike needs. Personally I wouldn't bother with the 14, the SV650 doesn't need all that CCA.

I've had a 10 on my Deauville (650 V-twin) for 6yrs without hiccup, so it would do a SV650 fine. The 12 would give slightly more capacity and CCA if you're prepared to drop the fuse tray.

Only 24.99 !!!

Mines dead too - assume because the bikes beem stood unused, charged it overnight with my optimate and wouldn't even sound the horn this morning !
