not once in my massively long biking career (of nearly 3 weeks!) have i had to try so hard not to be taken down. just driving to work and back i had someone come out of a junction looking in her handbag, a wally in a range rover u-turning on a bend, on a hill, in the rain and not even indicating. these two were on the way in, so i decided to be extra careful coming home. third time 'lucky' and stuff.
so i ride home, not even filtering, stop at red lights on a crossroad. pull away slowly when green, some (long string of censoring stars) comes from the other direction not indicating but turning right across oncoming traffic including me! luckily there's two lanes on my side and the left one's empty next to me so i swerve hard as i can into it. the bike threw a serious wobble i really thought i was coming off, could barely hold the bars, feet on the floor, slapping my knackers on the tank. i probably was going less then 20mph but i had to make such a violent manoeuvre to avoid hitting this moron head on. kept it upright somehow, dont know how at all-i was preparing to jump off!
i stopped on the other side of the junction and heard a nice smack as the lorry behind me hit the passenger side of the offending car. saved my the effort of seeing how hard the carbon knuckles of my gloves actually are.
:smt067
didn't bother going over to say anything cos i was too shook up, plenty of other people were getting involved anyway not least the lorry driver.
the first two incidents i can cope with, they are daily occurrences but that last one made me hurt inside.
and my commute today was less than 10 miles!

We all have our bad days. With more experience and better anticipation you'll hopefully find that they reduce in number, though. Take it easy.
Never really had an incident that I hadnt seen coming from a mile off.
I recommend increasing your observational skills.

EEk sounds scary. When I moan about other drivers pulling out on me etc, Phil always says I should have been more observant! Still no excuse for other people's silly mistakes.
Hope thats the end of your scary episodes!

i have no doubt that if i was a better rider then these things would be less likely to happen

no, but you'd spot them earlier, the fact that you avoided these incidents shows that you're paying attention anyway, only more miles will make it easier to spot the wallys coming:cool:

This happened to my dad, he wasn't so lucky.
20 breaks in the thigh/hip, hip replacement in a few years, not to mention the snapping of a major muscle (1 of 4) in his shoulder. 2 years off work, unable to walk for over a year, unable to sleep properly, drugged up etc...... Not to mentioned writing off poor Nelli.
Slowest speed ones cause the injury, high speed ones simply kill you.

how can you say that when he says that he got out the way.
yer lucky escape, but the car drivers are not nice at all, i had loads off cars move into my way while filtering this morning just to try and stop me getting past lol, still didnt work tho lol

Found it on the web. IMages.google

Scary stuff. However, despite it seeming like everything is against you, at the end of the day someone must have been on your side as you managed to stay on your bike!
how can you say that when he says that he got out the way.
Because from what he has described, he shouldnt have needed to take evasive action to get out of the way.....he should have seen it coming.....hence observations.
Glad your ok though :smt058now you will know what to look out for in the future ;)
G, fair play, just thought it was strang you saying that when if he wasnt paying attention then he would have been typing that car hit him pmsl
btw wasnt digging at you befor eyou got the wrong reasons :) lol
oh btw you should have rang the police as the driver would have or could have been dealt with that way as well as by the sounds of it needs to be done lol

the guy behind me definately didn't see it coming!
the guy behind me definately didn't see it coming!
He probably did but a big lorry cant swerve out the way like a bike can and if they are loaded up they cant stop either......justice served to the idiot driver.

I find that all the rubbish drivers seem to come out at once. The important thing is you didnt crash/get taken out so just put it all behind you and hope thats the end of all your "eeeeeeeeeeek" moments.:D

I'd have stuck around to tell the plod how carp the car driver was, after all, down to their driving, they nearly knocked you off too, also you were a witness of sorts
I do hope the lorry did a lot of damage to their car, they deserve it

The Z4 driver that recently showered me with loose chippings and had a right good laugh with his mate about it knows just what loosing an expensive door mirror feels like ;)

£320 for a heated, electronic BMW wing mirror replacment ;)
(just be careful not to get caught for criminal damage or leaving the scene of an accident)

I know someone recently who had a little altercation with a Porsche. it was either get knocked off the bike or the Porsche loosing the passenger window...guess who won:silent:
Not to mention they left a nice big dint in the door too....The bike carried on riding. The porsche was in the wrong, they were bullying their way into the left hand lane in very heavy traffic:rolleyes:

completely unrelated to any of the above of course, if i found a mirror in front of my fist ,accidentally, where/how would i make sure i didn't do the most damage if it was impossible not to make contact. i'd hate to upset anyone
I had a good one yesterday... It really got under my skin too... it was basically the old "I'm bigger than you scenario"....
I was sititng in the RH turning lane on a major road waiting for a space in the oncoming traffic to make my turn. In a steady stream of traffic coming the other way a truck driver decided to turn right into the truck park to my left. Without any hesitation and under a reasonable amount of braking he entered the chevron area infront of me and stopped literally about 2m off my front wheel. He then signaled to turn right and waved me to make my turn.
It made the old snippet value go, I can tell you.
So with no visibility my only option was to back-up a bit and rejoin the traffic on my side of the road. (The flow of traffic on the other side didn't allow me to continue).
Eventually and after giving the guy a few select hand gestures (and making him wait while a couple of perfectly good gaps went by) I rejoined the flow of traffic and took the next right.
I completely understand how difficult it is to manouevre an HGV, but this guy was a complete k++b. He'd obviously made a decision or realised late where his turn was, but seriously.......
Sorry to digress. Put it all down to riding experience. The good thing is you handled the situation and didn't have an off.
Hit mirrors down from the top, knocks them straight off onto their retaining wires/spring ;)

You wouldn't do any damage by not swinging your fist in a downward arc and not striking said mirror on the top, not sending it clattering into the tarmac with as much force as possible.

I'm a bit confused by your post - did the car come through a red light, or was there a filtering lane
Regardless of what others have said about observations, well done for keeping it shiny side up :D
I have titanium toe sliders for just that, but never had to use them yet.
Capt. Make sure call the police, just in-case the lorry driver needs any additional witnesses to the fools driving.

If you want to do least damage to said mirror, only apply light force to the glass as extreme downwards force is likely to rip it clean off the car.
However if your bar-end is the contact point with the glass, it will be messy, oh and remember to counter any impact force by pulling back on the opposite side so as not to cause a worse accident by it pulling the bars in the direction of the vehicle with the mirror in question and causing you to have a road/lid interface

cheers for the useful advice in protecting a vulnerable and expensive car part. i can see how an innocent driver could view accidental damage as a form of retaliation-ish road rage

that's why i use crya pro bend hand guards, as seen here:

with a full length strip of steel running around your digits your hands are protected from the daily hassle of inappropriately located wing mirrors;)

Over time you get a second sense for who's gonna pull these crazy manoeuvres and you learn to look further up the road and take more info in. Had many a scare during the first year of riding, even after driving a car for 11 years (not non stop, I had to sleep occasionally!) and having good road sense.
These incidents will always happen but before long you'll be reacting to them without thinking about it or proactive avoiding them before they've happened!

To make the least damage you would want to aim closer to the vehicle but as this posses a bigger risk to the rider as they would be hitting/connecting with something harder this isn't a good option.
Right dead centre is likely to smash the glass and possibly remove the mirror but right on the end with a flick away from the car is likely to remove the mirror with a bit of speed meaning that when the wire for the electrics can stretch no more, the mirror will swing violently back towards the bodywork of the vehicle......... Probably!;-)
