As I mentioned on a previous thread (but didn't want to hi-jack) I've been suffering with my hands being sore, sometimes after not very long on the bike. Being a girlie I don't have a lot of upper body strength at all and know I need to improve it alongwith my forearm and hand strength to help my enjoyment on the bike. Just wondering if anyone has any good ideas for what would help. Or will it all come with time on the bike as my muscles get conditioned to being in new positions?
I've always had strong legs due to years as a kid horseriding, doing gymnastics, roller skating etc but I'm definitely needing to work on my upper body.
Cheers for your help :D

One of these things may help, does your forearms more but these are a big factor in your hand strength too.

Another option is like a bicep curl but for your wrist only, can be done both ways. Another option again is push-ups with your hands and fingers spread out.

Apparently, squeezing a ball will help.

Yeah I had heard that and dug out an old tennis ball but think I'm more needing one of those stress ball type ones
What on earth do you call the plier looking things a few posts above and I'll do a wee search for them?

My mate used to have one of these, meant to be really good for strengthening wrists! You pull the string out to get the ball spinning and you have to keep the momentum going by continually moving your wrist round and round, good fun!

Rubber balls or them stress ball things are great too, as Lissa mentioned.
lol :D

I could do with a stress ball too. Not because I have a weak grip, but because I live with Pete:p

Powerball.
http://www.powerballs.com/
They are manually operated Gyroscopes and the amount of force that are put on your arms help strengthen very quickly.

Now there's an offer!
Can I use mole grips?:p

Chinese chiming balls and the hand grip that Dangerous Dave posted.
http://www.simplerandomness.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/chimeballs.jpg
The chinese balls when used correctly connect with all the acupuncture points on your hand, they also make the guiders up your forearm work individually and stengthen them
I have used them for years, and have pretty good forearms and hand grip for a sparrow. Not only that but I recommended them to my friend who had carple tunnel surgery, she got a lot of strength and grip back that she lost after surgery

Only problem with that is if you ain't used to it you can only do it for about ten minutes before your arms completely give up on you . Also there could be potentially too much strain on arms not used to it, better to build up strength gradually I should think. Definitely good exercise though!

Wow so much advice!! Cheers guys n gals :D
I had heard about those gyroscope things before but wasn't really sure what they did  and I'm sure I've got chinese balls somewhere but suspect they are just cheapy ones.
Had a chat with my mate last night (typical bloke with huuuuuge forearms) and he told me about something a few climbers he knew used which is like a block with springs for each finger (a bit like a trumpet) not got a clue what they are called but apparently they're quite good too. I know someone mentioned climbing earlier - I've done a wee bit in the past but never frequently enough for it to make a difference, might have a look into it again!
Loads of things to try - plus I think I'm gonna go swimming after work tonight, if I can fit into my swimsuit

I had to see a physiotherapist becos i knackered the ligaments in my wrist and took it along - he was so impressed with it that he went and bought some for his patients.

Miss yorkie chris's ball is wonderful, I had to do a grip text to join the job and increased my forearm strength with one of those, just sat there watching TV with my ball whizzing around in my hand - good piece of kit

When I saw the title of this thread, I wondered how long it would take before someone suggested firing off some knuckle children.

I even tried to be careful with my wording cause I knew it wouldn't take long!!
Thanks everyone for your suggestions - in the first place I think I'm going to try and get one of those gyroscope thingys that missyorkiechris suggested - ShellyWoozle did you find your handstrength improved as your forearm strength did?
And ScoobyDrew that looks weird and I can't tell from the picture how it would work!!! But since they sell them in Hubby's "favourite shop in the world ever" (yep, thanks for that ;)) I'm sure I'll see one soon.
