View Full Version : Why did I buy a chain?

When I bought a (security) chain for my bike I didn't realise how much space there was for it under the seat. Therefore, I bought a short one to keep the weight down believing I'd be carrying it in a backpack.

It's so short though, that I rarely lock my bike to anything because it's such a hassle positioning it close enough, and therefore just put the chain through my wheel.

I've just realised that the chain does nothing a disc lock can't do. What is the point in making/selling short chains then?

Stops it being picked up and chucked in a van. Well, slows it down a bit anyway.

a 1.5 Metre chain is about the smallest , best , all round solution . I can get one of them , a puncture kit , petrol syphon and tool kit under my K3 seat .

Wouldn't get my almax under the seat

My Almax is only used when I'm at home cos even carrying it in a back pack hurts my back in about a min. They're so damn heavy!!!

The way I figure it bundling a motorbike into a van has got to be planned so the likely hood of it happening is slim when you leave it in town or outside a pub for an hour or so.

xXBadgerXx once you get an Almax look into an Anti-Pinch Pin. It lets you secure your bike through the frame and you can get away with a shorter chain.

except when the admin of www.ktmforum.co.uk had his 560SMR stolen (the 2nd time) it was secured with an almax and pinch pin, and the pinch pin was the weak link that enabled it to be stolen

How was it stolen? What did the people do to the pin to make it useless?

iirc they angle ground the pin, a rep from almax was on the forum asking for advice about the theft as it was the first they were aware of where compromising the almax was the reason the bike got nicked.

Just took delivery of my almax series 4 the other day (2.5m long!). The thing is so damn heavy it would require an extra thief just to carry the chain and lock!

On a more serious note, it definitely looks the business and im sure no one is going to get through it without one hell of a struggle.

Also is it safe to lock it to a lampost? I would think that it is because it would not be easy to remove a lampost (and near impossible to cut through without getting electricuted!)! But i have heard of people removing street signs just to steel motorbikes!

seth's was chained to a lamp post, they went for the almax rather than the post...

Chaining it to a lamp post is what I do. I think its too big to chop thru a lamp post and not very discreet.

Cheers for the info wolf. Im fine with that. Im fully aware that an angle grinder will pretty much go through anything. I was just worried incase it was a proper simple hack that got round the pin.

I reckon a determined/professional thief will be able to have my bike away so I have equipped myself against everyone else under the professional level of b@st@rds/thieves. Plus if an angle grinder is the only way to release my bike its not the most discreet eh?

I've just realised that the chain does nothing a disc lock can't do.
With a disc lock you can still pick the bike up and throw it in the back of a van, you can't do this if you chain your bike to a post!

You're missing the point that the OP's chain is too short to attach to anything.

So, all of you with Almax - how do you lock the Almax to your bike? Through the frame? = difficult, Through a wheel? = only secures the wheel :???:

Then it ain't the motorcycle chain!.

I had a Motrax chain round a lamp post that my bf and I could chain our bikes to with shorter chains. But then someone nicked the motrax while we were out... :(
On the plus side with short chains - I rode off with the chain on the back and because it didn't stop quite so suddenly as with a disk lock I managed not to drop the bike. I use a chain but its a pain in the backside to carry round...

carry your almax chains in a ruck sack??...are u mad??

i have the immobilser 3 1.5m almax chain.....speak nicely to the lady at almax (she is registered on this site somewhere as almax IIRC) and ask for a kriega tailpack...i asked her after buying the chain over the phone.....seen her on this site and she sent me a free one next day.....perfect for carrying the chain in....bit of a pain should you want the look of the single seat cowl as u need the pillion seat on to use the tailpack...but for commuting who cares.....

any 1.5m chain you can fit under your seat I dont think is going to do a great deal to protect your bike should a theiving **** want it.....IMO

Anti-Pinch Pin thru the frame inbetween the cylinders attached to an Almax Round a lamp post which is off the ground.
As the anti-pinch pin end is quite small it actually slips inside the frame (but not through the cylinders but I don't like it going near them and the pipes) so I have another bicycle chain which attaches through the front wheel then round the opposite side of the Almax side. Disc Lock. :) Thats the way to do it.

Showing my inexperience, but, what is an anti pinch pin? Does anyone have a picture?
