i don't know about that specific case, but yes, there are robots around controlled by the brains of basic animals

Bah - I'll hold off on having a replacement knee until they can deliver a Robocop style bionic leg (complete with gun holster in the thigh)...
... and then I'll only accept it as long as it also makes a cool vvvvvBOOM vvvvvBOOM noise when I walk.

This weeks New Scientist had a report in it about neurons from fruit flies being used in Robotics. I was just flicking through so did not read the whole thing, but this research is happening so that computers can become more efficient.
