View Full Version : So what next?
I have been in the same company for over 10 years and am now bored with what I do. I have always been quick to jump out of bed and go to work, but each day that slips away a bit more.
The first problem is that I am bored with the industry I am in (IT) and would like to learn something new that would give me that spring back in my (work) step.
The second problem is that I don't really know what I want to do........so therefore does anyone have any suggestions, absolutely anything reasonable.

You know what I do Kev (IT Sales), I used to be a techie but got bored with it. hated the travelling, being on-site for 8 hours and the cr&p that goes with it, and got bored with the technology.
If it floats your boat we can have a chat about it, Can set you up with a few informal meetings with some people i know who run sales teams.
Other than that, the PGA tour looks a great career :D
Try side-stepping slightly, but staying within IT. Pick your weakest point, and try to improve it with experience.
I work in IT, and have most of my working life (not that long then). I've done everything from 1st line user support, through DBA, code monkey, site tech, etc etc.
Each role is very different.

Some of my advice is pure genius. Other bits of advice need carefull sifting to find the genius inside.
Learn this line - do you want fries with that? - You'll be set for life.Sadly that will get you nowhere these days, its more like "Is that a large meal sir?" Thats much more geared to towards the selling market.
As for other jobs. P*rn camera man?

Same problem i have (although not so bad at current, but the outlying issue still remains).
Would love my own business, but what in?????
Must be something to do with the IT industry as I want out too in all honesty - but its easy here and the pay is good so it will take a leap of faith - but to what?!
Ideal job - zoo keeper :)
I really have no idea what I want to do.........

That's funny, I've found the complete opposite. :)
I seem to change jobs a lot, usually out of choice/boredom. Please don't let my next employer be a member of the .Org...

Now I know you don't know much about bike mechanics... (from what you've said not from experience of course lol ;)) ...do you like cleaning them? Sounds random but...what about a detailing company?
Might be something you'd need to do for cars really though, I don't know how many people will pay for bikes to be detailed. But cars, yes...probably cos cars are more expensive = bought by richer people = money lying around to get detailing done...

I really have no idea what I want to do.........
why not join a team of half a million who all feel the same and teach then?
Terms and conditions are hard to beat, and you'll never be bored!

Mate I feel your pain, and what with job security being at it's all time low at the moment - well in my office of Architects we're struggling.
I'm considering about becoming Corgi Registered, although the downside here is it'll cost upto £5K to get it.
Food for thought though...and everyday will be different, without the same ole droan of "Good Morning, IT"
