View Full Version : Has a Pointy ever broken down?
Except for ones run on no oil.
I don't think I've ever seen a thread on here about a Pointy not running well?

Your right they never break down - only curveys do.
(cue usual Pointy vs Curvey battle!)
Mine never battered an eye lid with mostly spirited riding.

Pointy broken down? I seem to recall a certain blue SV making for the hard shoulder of the M6 ****-hot . (oh yeah and previously front mudguard had committed suicide lol)

It was obviously why I started the thread. & Dave maybe not, but I spend a helluva lot of time on here & haven't seen any that I can remeber so if anyone has spare time & knows what they are looking for & I'm willing to follow any links :)
LP yes ;) Rider error  and neither problem was difficult to fix or required a thread to diagnose the problem unlike the countless ones for Curvies with carb icing, stuck choke plungers, wiring loom catastrophes etc.

What defines broken down? Engine failure or any fault? As if I have a flat tyre, is that 'broken down'?

no

Proper break down, nope, and mine gets treated pretty badly, it lives out in the snow, it has *never* been cleaned since I bought it 18 months ago, it gets serviced and in between gets it's oil checked (only once needed a bit of a top up) and that's it. Oh, and it's been dropped twice too.
Niggly fault which I'd go so far as to say is a partial breakdown caused by bad design is the old problem of dropping onto one cylinder every time it's within ten miles of a single raindrop. I'd say of the 7k miles it's done, a good 2k have been done on one cylinder. Copious quantities of silicon based grease seem to keep the problem just about at bay, but I'm pretty sure I probably need new HT leads and plugs as well now.

Aha- good point. How many questions have we got about the FI light showing?
I'm sure any bike has its flaws really.
Like the pointy not being so god damned gorgeous as a curvy!!
But- yeah. Carbs can be a pain!
And lets talk reg/rec's on any SV!
countless ones for Curvies with carb icing, stuck choke plungers, wiring loom catastrophes etc.
My curvey had 28k on it and the only problem was my own fault, oil starvation. (OK so it needed a new engine, but still :p )
In any weather conditions. No other probs.

I've never been on a rideout where a curvy's broken down- apart from my own when I flattened the battery, but that was rider error. But I've been on 3 where pointies have :D 2 of 'em coil issues I think. They're as susceptible to wiring problems as the curvy, just that they're mostly newer. And they certainly have more catastrophic stress-related engine failures when tuned.
Carb icing isn't a breakdown, it's just bad planning, but you can always ride on. Stuck chokes are just neglect really, and if they get to the point that the bike's immobilise they've been going wrong for a while.
I had my starter coupling go sometime during the second year I owned my pointy SV650S K3. I had it fixed under warrenty. No problems since then. As far as I know it's a fairly rare problem.

A fair few pointies have spat rods for the sake of it, think it was the early ones. FI engine rods are lighter, suppose it reduces stress but they shaved the wrong bit...

So when's Stu's bike going to break down now?

Mine did, something big went in the gearbox and it needed a new engine.
Its wasnt from lack of oil either, and from chatting to the mechanic at the garage he had seen a few with serious gear box probs as well.

So when's Stu's bike going to break down now?Think I'd better sell it 8-[
And lets talk reg/rec's on any SV!I didn't know my bike had a reg/rec compared with all the broken ones on curvies.
i've had a curvy sv and now riding a pointy and i can honestly say the curvy was the single most reliable machine i've had and the pointy seem's to be the same starts first time on the button straight away(so did the curvy) rides great(both of em) and i can't think what i'll get next that'll do what these bike's do.

So when's Stu's bike going to break down now?
So that's why he asked about fitting a bike in a small van? Wondered about that & ALMOST doubted his motives.

I had a curvy for 5 years and the only problems I had was big end going due to lack of oil with 70,000 on the clock and choke cable snapped on one of the carbs the bike was used all year round and I was terrible at looking after it. It got to the stage where the garage knew what I was like too and stopped cleaning it when I took it to them.
When the engine died I got a pointy and one of the ignition coils went a couple of weeks ago but got that replaced under warranty.
Roll on my elbow fixing itself or the NHS getting round to removing the dodgy metalwork so I can get back to abusing the bike on a daily basis.

They're both pretty damn reliable really, even when they go wrong they tend to be able to limp home too.

Curvys---99-----02
Pointys--03-----08
There are bound to be more problems with any vehicles as they get older,Curvys are all older.

I've seen a pointy break down. It saw a curvy and coudn't contain itself. The frame and front fairing were so much better looking!
A mate said it had a nicer ****, but a measly led rear lamp just wasn't enough!

Curvies with wiring loom catastrophes etc.
My pointy had the wiring loom replaced. One of the three warranty jobs it's been in for...

Thanks again for your help that day. I've had both coils replaced - 'bad batch' apparently - but there again running on one cylinder doesn't constitute a breakdown in SV World.

Thanks again for your help that day.
As I recall, we all just fannied around for 10 minutes, me being all yellow an' s**t, then concluded it was broken and you should buy a Honda. Then we all had ice cream. You're welcome.
On the subject of Hondas- I think the only bike to break down at AR06 was Cronos's Blackbird :D

my Pointy was recovered today although it was due to shoddy workmanship from a stealership by not putting the spark plug cap on correctly

Once in 3yr, everydaying it. Would not start.
Luckily, the fella that parks next to me in the work endures a KR1 stinkwheel, and it never starts. Ever.
There is nothing better than somebody much, much worse off than you to put your prediciment in prospective.
