I won one, pretty cool! =)
Good points: Great graphics, good games coming out in the future, HDMI output, built-in wireless, blu-ray, quiet
Bad points: Fugly, huge, not so many good games out for it right now, controllers feel tacky.
All in all, I wouldn't buy one, just for how much they cost, but I'd happily win one and use it ^^
I recieved one just the other week and first impressions are good! :)
Only got the one game at the minute, GRID, which is the best racing game I've ever played!
No bad points so far, setup was easy and straight forward. Was dissapointed it didn't come with a HDMI cable though.
I reckon the PS3 is superior to the Xbox 360 (I've had one of those). The internet browser is awesome and the built in wi-fi makes it more 'complete' than the 360.
So is it really for your lad, or do you fancy one for yourself eh? :P
Oh, and I got mine for free with a phone contract - not sure if I'd buy one though, they are a lot of dollar! :)

Just get yourself one and stop trying to justify it by saying it's for your son!
I love mine, it's getting hooked up to my new Hi-def projector soon, 8 foot wide hi-def gaming! Woohoo!

Love mine but dont play games on it, well hardly. It records tv progs, it plays blue (ray) movies, plays all my downloaded movies, talks to my walkman and psp. Its a nice polished piece of kit, as opposed to the Xbox which sounds like an angle grinder most of the time.
Xbox which sounds like an angle grinder most of the time.
That's the reason I sold the xbox, was giving me headaches with the damn noise it makes! PS3 is much quieter!

Wow, i didn't even know it can record tv programs tbh.... =D

You do have to spend another £55 on a USB gizmo called playtv - but it then becomes a pretty good dual tuner freeview recorder, with some cleverness thrown in. You can also then move the recorded progs to your pc or laptop and watch them in media player, edit them for youtube etc.
ps3's alright but the controllers are miles behind the ergonomics of the 360 gives me cramp (especially call of duty 4) games somehow seem a lot duller on ps3 than xbox but it's worthit just for the blue ray i spose but for me if it's just games you cant beat xbox more games better titles similar specs.

I agree the 360 is noisier although the newer ones are much much quieter.
I've got 2 360's and did have a PS3 - i found the games much better on the 360 personally and could never get used to the sony controller.
The blu-ray was fab espescially starship troopers, in the end i just used to stream avi movies but the 360 can do this as well. I sold the ps3 as i never used to use it. and rumour (on good authority) is xbox360 will have a blu-ray add on to purchase for under 100 pounrds by next summer.
IMHO 360 every time - xbox live changes games.
the only thing that gets me with the 360 is that you have to pay for live it's just so wrong especially when theyre direct competitors do it free.

The Live servers are SOLID compared to PS3 and I`ve been on it since day one , I`m a die hard 360 fan but each to their own . Game sent me an email today , they are doing 40gb PS3`s with games for £299 . Worth a whiffle if you ask me , at the end of the day ANY Next Gen console is better than having no Next Gen at all :D
£299 is still way out of range of 360's £129 base console.

Factor in the cost of a Hard Drive on top of that , if his boy wants a PS3 then that is what he should get him , if he just wants a Next Gen console then I would opt for a 360 on cost and Bang Per Buck on the games front :D

You have to add it up and decide what suits. PS3 is wifi out the box, has standard usb, connects to standard bluetooth devices, hard drive upgradeable by simple swap out. (even allowed under warrentee). 360 starts off cheaper, but soon tots up if you want to start adding wifi, wireless headsets etc. Live costs $$ on xbox, and is essential if you are a gamer. Free on PS3. I have very few games, but I do have one thats in true 1080 HD, and it looks more impressive than the 720p games from the 360.
How about an old xbox - they are about £20 now, games for a few quid each and some are superb.
to be honest if your just gaming the memory card that comes bundled with it is more than enough for just game saves(no good for the movies though).

Live is only £40 for the year and outclasses the free offering from Sony by a long shot , that`s the only reason I have a 360 , if it wasn`t for Live I wouldn`t bother with any of them LOL . As far as Hi-Def goes I`m happy with games running in 720 anyway even with my 1080p TV . As you say , it`s Horses for Courses and you get the system that meets your requirements .

the setup we have is downstairs i have the 360 with the hard drive and wired to the router, xbox live is worth every penny and seems much better than the sony version when i had the PS3 - i found all my mates were on xbox live but none on ps3.
upstairs my eldest has a 360 with the memory card, no wi-fi or hard drive. works fine for us.
kids r upstairs on lego batman right now.
Sony dropped the ball big time with the PS3. They tried to make it to clever and has lost out on sales for the kids who just want a good games machine.
Its far to much for a 5 year old as there is no games the he would want to play. If it really is for a 5 year old then you have to get the wii, its utterly fantastic for that age group and bags of family fun.
ive had a wii console good for the kids games and interactive stuff for serious gaming not so good now sold it though to pay for my biking habit.

I have never liked anything nintendo have ever done. (Ok bought a N64 purely for Goldeneye)
Xbox. Got a decent PC and the rest is average arcade americana.
PS3, I'll buy for the religious experience that is Gran Turismo. November??

He has a few consoles, old x box, ps1, ps2, gameboy advance, nintendo ds, game cube and wii.
i find the wii rubbish now TBH and my 5year old and my 10year old never play it now :( my son is living on the gamecube now how old is that!!! but the games are brill.
if he wants a ps3 i'd get him one because i'm a big kid too and i like my games :) but i know what you mean about child friendly games.

The PS3 is sweeeeeeet. But may not suit a 5 year old.
The best thing is there aren't any games out yet that take full advantage of its capabilities and so in a couple of years time the PS3 will still be at the pinacle of gaming when your son is a wee bit older.
Plus we all really know you'll be playing it too :)
A couple of games are coming out next year that will utilise the PS3 more than any other game yet. If you type them in on youtube you will see what I mean.
They are Prototype and Eighth Day.
