what risks am i running by not doing the 15k valves check, i've done everything else except the valves
now about 1300 overdue and i still don't have the room to do it so what risks (i.e. likeyhood of damaged or something) am i taking by leaving them for say a further 2000 miles?

Well if the clearances are out, Mr Valve may interact with Mr Piston and then you have an expensive rebuild to do.
But from the threads on this before I've read many bikes get to that sort of milleages and when the valve clearances are checked they're fine.
Personally I'd get it checked...

Widepants ...its a twonk to do, but its necessary. They usually tighten up rather than get larger, and usually on the exhaust side.
Be prepared for skinned knuckles, and take the back wheel out to get at the rear cam chain tensioner

yeah, its just haynes is so lame they basically over complicate everything, you do it there way f'ing and blinding and generally like WTF, then when done sit back and say ffs it would have been easier to do it other way:rolleyes:

Checking the clearences is fairly easy.If you can chage the plugs you can do this.Only if you find they need adjusting and reshimming does it get hard, and they very rarely do need it.

really, on my old bike i found i was doing it nearly every service
was a single and easy peasy and not shimmed

The chances of it needing them adjusted if you check it are pretty tiny. But the chances of needing it if you don't are probably much more likely :D

Yup, and that's why you were doing it so much :) Shim under bucket is a pain to adjust but very very stable so it doesn't need many adjustments.

ah i see, so re shimming is not always needed untill more than 15k miles?

Mine's never needed it, I think it just hit 42- that's even with a cam swap! Now THAT's tolerancing.

so if i checked them now (16300) when would they next need checking, every 4000 service?

Every big service I think it is. It's in the manual though ;) I don't follow the manual for everything (for simplicity) so I'm not 100%, I just do it every 12000.

How difficult is it to do on the pointy as i might be looking at having a go at servicing myself?
I can do most things myself but how much is a valve check in a garage roughly instead?

Checking the valves is easy. Just remove the rocker cover and get youself a set of feeler gauges with a good range over the min and max tolerances. Al you need to do then is rotate the crank by hand to specific points and measure the gap.
Couple of things though, re-shimming if they are out of tolerance or close to is a much more involved job - one that unless you know what you are doinf, I'd take to a garage. Secondly, if a valve is close to a min/max tolerance, people tend to think that it's ok. However, I would still air on the side of re-shimming so that it is back between min/max - don't skimp on it!

cheers. I can do 95% of stuff but valve clearence would be kinda no no.
