View Full Version : gsxr front and flat bars
Hello all
I have a gsxr front end with clip ons, but now I'm thinking of putting on renthal bars. I remember reading that people have had problems with the top yokes cracking? I don't fancy paying out 120 odd quid for a "comfort" top yoke, so wondered if I could have risers welded onto the original yoke instead?
Also, am I going to find it uncomfortable with S rearsets on, should I change those too?
Thanks in advance ;)

Depends how good or big the welding is... so if you dont mind it looking abit bodge it will hold up fine for driving, crashing/ dropping could possibly snap the welds tho.
not sure about the rear sets, ive got drag bars on my N and the normals feel a little to high so keep them and find out, itll be different for everyone.

I used an LSL top yoke to put Renthall bars onto GSXR forks. Expensive, but nice. I'm also using rearsets with that set-up and although it's a slightly sporty seating position it's certainly not uncomfortable. I'm 5'10" if that makes any difference.

Sean welding is not a good idea unless it is seriously high strength mate. I would reccomend as above with LSL. I almost drilled my CBR top yoke to fit the risers I have in my garage, never did incase I cocked up and weakened it or drilled a weak spot.

No. Do not weld to yoke, it'll probably warp or crack. Dimensionally important part.
I drilled mine, it's alright so far.
I'd be worried about drilling mine :(
www.streetfighterstore.com do top yokes for 150 quid, which looks alright to me. I think my current top yoke is from a pre 2000 gsxr 750 and the forks are 2001. How far back are the yokes compatible? Some places only do the top yokes up to '99 as far as I saw.
Looks like this'll be quite an expensive little change if I do it.. :(

Dont forget cable lengths too Sean. I think it will look good when and if you do it though mate :)
I got peed off with taking a mirror off every time i got the bike out or put it away, so was thinking of putting normal mirrors on, which for some reason led to me thinking of this :p
By the time you add throttle, brake and maybe choke and clutch into the mix it's not a cheap option :(

Is it a curvy or pointy? I got away with the throttle cables on my K5 by running then down between the headstock and the front of the tank, but I've got 10mm risers in the front of the tank and I did have to make a modified bracket for the throttle body because of the new throttle cable angle. I did try getting longer cables but I couldn't find any "off the shelf" from another bike and getting some made specially seemed expensive, unless anybody on here knows differently.....?

I'm not quite following you ...how are the mirrors attached at teh moment?
Anyhoos ,how about getting a clutch perch off an SV650N and for the brake side, just buy the part the mirror screws into....suzuki sells them seperate. Tip: Get one off an SV1000N.
If you want the bars higher but still involving less hassle, you could try sourcing some clipons off a Ducati 750SS(can't remember what year right now but you want blackish coloured non- Ally ones). The Ducati clipons give fully adjustable clips to boot ;)
Oh, get a pic of you headlight bracket, side on and I'd tell you if my tip above(re clipons) would be any good.

Curvy. At the minute they're TL clip ons with bar end mirrors, which make the bike too wide to get into the back garden!
I'll take a picture when I get home ;)
Why not buy a second yoke to drill for risers if you're concerned about making an ar$e of yours?

For safety I would go for either the ABM or LSL kit, I have seen one cracked top yoke in person and I know of others who have seen more.

I can't dispute what you have seen but I've used drilled Top yokes myself with no problems at all.
Also have been friends for years, with folks who used to build bikes and have seen more drilled and /or welded(risers weldin to yokes) yokes that I could shake a stick out ... and also without one single failure.
I can understand folks being wary but like everything if folks go drilling like monkeys wihout giving much thought into webbing, position and load spread then it's more human error. The aftermarket yokes definitely do look nicer....I have a custom made top yoke one myself ;)

Sean, that bike looks so right with the clip ons. What difference will the other bars make, you still have to have mirrors that are wider than your body so will be wider than the access thoroughfare maybe. My bar end mirror folded in, or what about using naked lever mounts that have mirror holes in them, or I've seen some bar end mirrors that hang under the bars similar to how a Pan Euro's mirrors work.

Indeedy Pete.
Sean , if you are happy with clipon set you have then keep them....saves you fraffing around unnecessarily too, with cables etc
Infact here's an offer for you. Got a kawasaki ER5 clutch perch/lever, mirro boss for brake side which I bought for one project and a set of mirrors which are not as wide as regular naked mirrors.
You could just use the Kwak clutch perch/lever as stop gap(threaded hole for mirror is slightly offset compared to SV ones and I found it a bit off putting lol) till you can find on off a Naked SV. SV ones don't seem that plentiful.
I'd let you have the lot above.... ;)

I'm not sure which year either but I have the Ducati clipons on my bike and they're great.

It was a TLS top yoke.

I like the clip ons, I'm used to that style too. Pete- I was thinking that mirrors mounted by the switch gear wouldn't stick out as far and may even pull in to get down the side of the house. I still scrape one mirror with the other removed.
Ben, any chance of some pictures? Cheers.
Another question- Dave, maybe you'll know.
I've found the master cylinder off a pointy nakid on eBay- I don't suppose any of you know if this fits my TL clip ons? Or if there'd be any problems with flow rate in combination with the gsxr 4 pots? And also if the curvy leaver works with the pointy MC.

It will fit, all OEM clip-ons and OEM handle bars are the same diameter.
Or if there'd be any problems with flow rate in combination with the gsxr 4 pots?
No problems at all, I ran the then 750 with the SV master cylinder for two years before upgrading to a Brembo (bit tarty I know)
also if the curvy leaver works with the pointy MC.
Not sure to be honest, I have a thought but wait for someone who can give you a 100% definite answer.
Thanks Dave. A new leaver wouldn't cost much anyway..
Brembo.. Lovely! I'm still looking forwards to the extra braking power with calipers that actually have non seized pistons.. Still got to get my disks back or refunded first though :(
