They can charge what the hell they like. If you don't like it vote with your feet and tell them you are going elsewhere

Do a booze cruise to France and buy 5 litre plastic kegs - they are only around 3 and a half Euros and as table wine its not half bad.

unfortunately with that much time theres not much you can do.

The wedding place i worked charged £21.50 a bottle and bought it in @ £2.75!

I've been in a restaurant on a large table where a mate brought a couple of bottles in, along with his own waiters tool. He opened them on the sly and the restaurant staff (who weren't particularly on the ball in any aspect of service) didn't notice and we weren't charged for them. Easier to get away with when there are a couple of the 4 bottles on a table done this way, on a single table in a restaurant, rather than for the whole wedding party, mind. :D

Hovis, using your quantities (£14 x 50) that's £700 for the toast drinks. It doesn't need to be this much.

If the people are happy to use sparkling wine you can get this for £4.99 or £5.99 a bottle. Assuming you want 175ml glasses you need 28 bottles of plonk. (175ml x 8 people x 15 tables) = 21000ml = 28 bottles.

28 x 4.99 = £139.72 drinks
28 x 4.50 = £126 corkage
Total = £265.72

You'd probably want to add some cartons of orange juice too for those that don't drink. We 'negotiated' with our wedding venue and they didn't charge corkage on soft drinks. (Thay wanted to but we told them where to go. £4.50 'corkage' on an 89p carton of juice is just ludicrous!)

Serves them right for getting married.

Everything to do with weddings is a rip off.

It's a shame that everybody in the wedding business seems to play on the fact that the bride and groom would like everything to be "special" for their big day.

I can recommend Hardy's crest sparkling Hovis. Or Montana sparkling if you can get it cheap. Both good* alternatives to champagne in my opinion

*by good I mean cheaper - don't want to debate the pro's and con's of sparkling wine vs champagne!

Not helpful buddy. :smt090

Many people want to get married and whilst it is true that companies / venues take advantage of this, many things can be done at a reduced cost if you innovate a little.

serve wine without corks... ta da... unless they charge a screwage fee.. that makes them ****** and you can call the police on them all and have them arrested.

on a serious note its something I was adament I would not be paying, so found a place which didnt charge it, it was the only way I could get around it.

I agree. There is a huge amount of BS around the wedding trade. Venues and caterers hike their prices if the 'W' word is mentioned.

yeah, they still charge

the wedding is in a castle, so i guess you can kind of expect to pay over the odds,

Cartwrim, I should have added a sarcastic smiley there. I appreciate your view and no malice was intended.

I have been married twice and can totally understand the frustrations being felt.

I don't want to sound pretentious but, if the wedding is on Friday why are we only just now looking at getting the cost down. Surely all the costings should have been worked out months ago.....................

+1 We used Hardy's crest for our wedding and it went down really well.

Not sure where you can buy wine bottles of those sizes... but if you can come across a 'Primat' bottle (27 litres, 36 bottles) then it must be worth a look :P

No worries mate :)

I too thought that it is a bit late in the day to be sorting out the drinks orders but hey! :bball: My Mrs made sure we had all the drink bought miles before, probably cos it was on offer in Tesco's or whatever :p

We had to pay for corkage at our wedding and I resented it but we'd already set our hearts on the venue so from that point on we did things as cheaply as we could. Made own invites, table decorations, place settings, flowers etc.

Unfortunately you can't get around the need to pay expensive drinks prices but there are some areas you can save big in :D
