View Full Version : Pointy stand for removing swing arm / shock etc
Ok, so, you'll remember my endeavors with the first pointy - removing the suspension to clean it with it supported on a paddock stand - wondering why the last bolt was tight just before it came out and plonked the bike on top of me ( yeah, I know ... muppet ! )
Anyway, as the only way to "properly" clean a bike is to take it to bits right, I wasn't going to be caught this time, so how to support the bike ??
After a bit of head scratching I made this in a couple of minutes - it's rock solid - you can use a paddock stand and lower it onto it. jobs a good un'.
Only problem is getting the top bolt out of the shock linkage - so I'll be modifying it as shown. You have to take the side stand off, but perfect opportunity to strip and respray it properly with black enamel paint.
Good eh ... :D

i sorta do the same thing
use paddock stand to lift bike then use axle stands under the same locations as you.
nice stand though, looks like its well sturdy.
next time i'm at the workshop i'm gonna have a good head scratch to see what i can come up with.
I looked at all sorts of ways, the wooden stand was the easiest, and least likely to get in the way or be knocked over I though - and VERY CHEAP :)

thats wot i do myself works really well and lets the bike stay very sterdy.
was thinking of fabing up a sorta rocker cradle using the slots at the bottom of the frame for locations,, sorta like a cross between a centre stand and a rocking chair... slip it under the bike locate pins then rock the bike onto stand .. hmmmm .. will be at workshop on Saturday.. i'll have a bash then.

That would be something 2 the idea of an abba stand i think.
sorta.. but not using the swing arm spindle..
anyway this is banana's thread not mine ...
You carry on - if this thread had been around when I had the first one, I wouldn't have had it on top of me ;o) so if it's info for others - fine by me.
You could make something up quite easily that slotted into the holes in the bottom of the frame - trouble is, you need to take bits off first ideally - buying an ABBA stand would of course be the ideal solution though - just more expensive and the wooden one I knocked up is neat and out of the way so little chance of knocking it off the stand by accident.
Plus, I knocked the wooden thing up in about 5 minutes.

yup and what a fine job you done of it sir...
a cutting list and diagram of parts would be most helpfull for the rest of the org'rs.
i take it you notched a bit off the top right hand side for the side stand switch?
Get your self an ABBA stand, think of it like this: an ABBA stand will set you back about 100 quid, how much would it cost if the bike fell off/over???? Crunch & kerching £££££.

coz were not all rich.... but an abba stand is the ideal solution.
I had an Abba stand when I had my curvy - to be honest, I never really liked it much - it never felt solid and could be a bit awkward to use and they are a bit big and bulky.
This wooden effort is VERY stable - believe me - I have given the bike a good few shoves and trust me - it's not going to fall off.
I took the side stand switch out - only 2x 6mm bolts so no effort required and it then the frame sits flat on the wood - I'll be cutting a hole ( arrowed on pic ) to let me get the bolt out of the suspension casting - but should still be solid enough I reckon.
That £100 I saved on the abba stand will pay for a new back tyre, or MOT and Tax, or a new battery .... or a set of Renthals
I'll do a drawing tomorrow
