View Full Version : DVI - RGB or HDMI
So then i bought a plasma and want to link the PC up to it. I have tried SVideo with limited success. Reading the instructions (1st time in a while i can tell ya) it says that the software in the screen recognises and auto adjusts either the RGB or the HDMI input. My PC only has RGB(for the current screen) or a DVI output, so what is best. Im not going to use it as a mian screen but mainly for video output of the PC to the screen.
On this occasion, its Not.
Thanks for the reply though
Stick a new graphics card in with HDMI out on it... Make the most of what you have :)

Dvi-HDMI cable is what you need. Here you go.

The DVI is best as its digital... the other connection is analogue, though to be honest I'd be surprised if you even noticed the difference.

Depends on how many HDMI ports he has, and really it would be fine just using the DVI on the TV, though it depends on his tv's connections. I think most have a couple of HDMI, scart, RGB, VGA and DVI. No need to buy extra cables, as both the VGA and DVI connections have been giving computer monitors clear images and high refresh rates for years.

Yeah but the OP states that his screen can only read RGB or HDMI and his computer only has RGB (for the current screen) or DVI. So either he carries on using RGB or get a DVI to HDMI cable.
Also re reading the OP post Viney you say you only want to use it for the video output. So first question does your graphics cards support dual outputs i.e. will it output on both RGB and DVI simultaneously? And if it doesnt the DVI-HDMI cable will allow you to switch between the two without messing around with cables.

DVI to HDMI cable or converter.
DVI and HDMI are essentially the same, except that HDMI carries audio as well as video. It's only the connectors that are significantly different.
I can display pixel perfect 1920x1080 full HD resolution on my TV from my laptop using a DVI to HDMI cable.

Viney just get a DVI to HDMI cable or a DVI to HDMI adapter and you will be set. It will cost about £10. And make sure you have up to date drivers for your video card. That is all.

The holy grail of PC to TV is getting a 1:1 pixel mapping, where each pixel output by the graphics card maps to 1 pixel on the TV. This can be a bit tricky to achieve.
You need to ensure that the DVI output is set to the native resolution of the TV. The TV manual should tell you what this is. Then you need to make sure that the TV does not scale the picture (this is what caught me out). If you get this right, you should get a very sharp, clear picture on the TV.
What tv is it?

It wasnt eh cable i was questioning, just which plug to use. As there seems to be no difference then i'll go the HDMI route. As for swapping graphics cards, its a little more than i wanted to pay.
I'll get a DVI - HDMI cable then :)

OK, so native resolution is 1024 x 720. So you should really set your graphics card to output that resolution on the DVI.

+1
this is what will give you the best picture.
I do the same with an HDMI>DVI cable, and it looks amazing.

I went down that route with the SVideo cable and it wasnt pretty, hence reading the destructions and finding out that it prefers HDMI and RGB inputs better.

S-Video won't work above about 768x576 resolution and the graphics card will scale the s-video output to 768x576, regardless of the resolution that it's set to. S-video is a pretty poor quality video format compared to RGB or DVI/HDMI.
Yes, i know that, NOW ;)
