There was a thread on GSXR junkies on this, some guy on there repairs them. He said the RROD error was caused by the unit over heating, its supposed to be better now than it was, he said it was carp bit of design and the airflow doesnt get through the box to cool the chips on the mainboard for the graphics ( I think )
Microsoft's extension of the warranty to three years only covers the "red ring of death" general hardware failure, not error E74 or other such errors featuring only one flashing red light on the ring piece indicator, or video errors not accompanied with the "red ring of death".
Out of warranty repair service is available for a price, which comes with a one year warranty. All repairs provide a one year warranty from the date of repair, or continuation of the original warranty (whichever is longer
Depends what actually causes it

i had 3 red lights = ring of death. Rang microsoft, they sent me an email with a 'sticker' which needed printing out and sticking on the box which a courier would collect. 6 weeks later it came back, all free of charge and with 'extended warranty'.
Not had any problems since and xbox live/the 360 games are all brilliant :)

you had to wait 6 weeks!

aye, think it was 6 weeks from first phone call, 1 week later they collected, 5 weeks later they redelivered. I bought mine 2 years ago, and it was in summer last year when it went wrong - but with all these new xbox's "elite" etc they'll have sorted out the teething problems

I have had 3 Xbox 360`s . Not one of them had a RROD . I am now on an Elite 360 and it`s quieter , runs cooler definately . They introduced the Falcon motherboard about a year ago and that calmed things down a lot . My 360`s get hammered as you can tell by my Gamerscore , and I Haven`t had any issues with them .
On a side note , Microsoft appointed me "Ambassador" status this week . http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/ambassadors/nonus.htm , Scroll down to the bottom of the page and there is xXBADGERXx in the UK section :D

Does that mean you have played it enough to become an un-authorized dealer? ;)

No it means I can deal with technical issues and help users out over the headset , help Noobs with games they are getting pounded on , or just show them the ropes :D

The 360s they've been selling in the last 6 months to a year are a different internal design than the original box that had so many problems with the RRoD. You're covered by the retailer for the first 12 months for any fault (straight swap, new for old), and from then onwards for another 2 years by Microsoft for a RRoD fault.
Mine failed after about 2 years, took about 2 weeks for the round trip to the MS repair center and it's been fine since.

Yeah I need to get on to them about that as I should be in that section really rather than the UK one

My freind brought one of the first xbox's. He had several ring of deaths...each time cured by wrapping the unit in a towel and turning it on. Got so hot, the solder inside mentled and reformed the connection that was broken to cause the ring of death in the first place :D
I have a fairly recent xbox. I keep it in a place where it can get enough air to it to keep cool. No problems so far

i had a google for this, think i posted in another thread about 2 weeks ago. I'll see if I can find it. Think it's something like faulty AV cable which usually needs replacing? Failing that the box'll need sending back to microshaft

yeah you did. tried runnning it without the av cable and two segments flash up, and i think is well out of warranty...

bought this yesterday on PS3 and would reccomend it for anyone who likes GTA san andreas or earlier ones. think it actually beats GTA4 as its not as seriousa and infinitly more playable.
was seriously put off by a demo of the original saints row but this is just awesome.
massive amounts of sillyness, violence, swearing, violence etc.
