View Full Version : My day (I crashed a little bit!)

So I was on a rideout with the Kent Motorcycle Society from uni, we were down at the Pfizer roundabouts being naughty boys and girls. I had the bike cranked over a hell of a lot, lost rear grip, caught it before it highsided me, but as it gripped again it was very wobbly, moved about a lot and turned rather awkwardly to the inside of the roundabout, leaving me almost on the kerb; suffice to say I got the bike slowed down to about 5 mph when it sort of ghostied itself away from me; it landed on my leg, which was lucky as the only damage is a small scuff on the motoslider, a touch-upable scratch on the fairing and the rhs indicator. I felt a bit silly but then I was carrying more corner speed than the majority of people there, one guy came up to me and was like 'I am very embarrassed,' I was like, 'yeah, but you didn't crash!'

Anyways, here's some pictures of me from the day:

Do you have any sliders on?! Looks like you are going to wear a hole in your leathers...

Good pics though, no doubt that you can corner fast!

Yeah sliders would be a good start lol, theres another inch that you dont need to be cranked over for a start lol.

Glad you you are ok mate. Curiously, what tyres are you on as i've been told that those types of angles are impossible unless you are on sticky racing ones? I'm still trying to find my boundarys on my MEZ4's but have no idea because they are impossible to predict. I have Avon Storms coming and i'm hoping all the hype is true. Cool pictures by the way and get yourself some sliders!

How long you been riding to get your knee down that much?

I think I must lean about 5 degress (only passed test 1 week ago), lol :D

I do have sliders on, lol, well, I lent my left one to a mate as his were worn through. When this photo was taken there's less than a centimetre left on the slider on the right, I then swapped it later for the left hand one when my mate was done. I got maybe a few more degrees out of the bike before the rear went, the front never missed a beat. I've got a Z6 (120/70) on the front and a PR2 on the rear; something I think I'll stick with, very confidence inspiring.

I've been riding almost exactly a year now, although from feb-end of april I was bikeless.

The main reason I dropped it was trying to get my elbow down :( I got pretty close though!

G

I was riding 3 months until my first touch down lol.....probably would have been sooner but I couldnt afford leather haha

Seriously though you see old men on R1's and blade's going around roundabouts with their knee down, they are wobbly as hell and going really slow.....but it makes for a good photo and thats what counts! isnt it?

If you have been passed a week concentrate on cornering smootly, build up the speed and eventually it will happen....when your ready.

When you go out with the aim to scrape your knee......you try to hard and the result is the reason behind this thread.

That wasn't the first time I've got my knee down, most times when I was riding I was lifting my knee up so I could get some more lean angle. I wanted to see how far I could lean the bike over so I did, and happened to crash at a very slow speed after I'd almost saved it.

I now know the limits of the bike and there's about £10 worth of damage to it. Now I know the limits of the lean angle I can work on things that would make me quicker on a track like trail braking.

When I was done, my tyres were really hot to touch. Was excellent :D

Every tyre is more than capable......even the supposedly rubbish D220's that come standard on the pointy can achieve it without a twitch......

I get paranoid of all the gravel and diesel spilt around here and how the bike will react to hitting it (i live in the sticks). I cant afford to fall off and wreck my bike even though the bike is far more capable than me at the minute.

Yeah I wasnt specifically refering to your little incident, i remember your post a few weeks ago saying you got your knee down with some practice.

Was more of a general statement trying to put off someone who has been passed a week from trying it lol

It will loose traction and then regain traction  adds to the fun, just make sure you dont panic (easily said lol)

Loose and regain traction?

Hit either of those and your down before you know it.

My main issue with trying to get my knee down on the road. Roundabout knee downs don't really get me going.

Disagree, I have lost the rear several times.

Once in gravel on the A54, the rear spun up and probably stepped out 1ft. On a wet drain or diesel (didnt stop to look) two weekends ago I did the same. Then on the cat and fiddle the rear bounced in a pothole 4inches off the ground at the macclesfield end and my closest call yet, a big rear slide caused by overbanding at 90+ mph.

Admitedly I have not had the pleasure of the front going properly yet just slight lock ups and one slight occasions where I'm pretty sure my knee kept me up right before ending up in a gravel trap.

Did a similar thing in sunday's Spurn point rideout, on a roundabout leaned in tooo much, right over when the bars did a single twitch, managed not to go down (though god know's how) just on the exit point of the roundabout... looked at the chicken-strip on the Avon Storm back tyre, later on and the visible scuffing was into the STORM lettering!!!......rode a little bit more cautiosly for a while after that, nowt' like having the bars waggin' to cool the blood..............

definatly get rid of the MEZ4's, the handling of my bike changed for the better instantly!!

just build some confidence up on the new tyres for a while and then when the weather gets better in the spring. scout out a nice big roundabout with a good surface that you can see all the way round. wait till it's nice and quiet and see what you can do.

although i would say the best thing would be to go on a track day (the most fun you'll ever have) and while there ask one of the instructors to go out on track with you (usually free). i did this and before i knew it without intending to my knee was scraping around the last few corners of silverstone :D

Are you just try to get big lean or scrape your knee?

After reading some of your posts in the 'Filming Thread' I would have thought the type of riding required to do either on the road would be against your morals anyway.

If your bothered about diesel/cars/gravel......then book a cheap trackday and really realise what your bike is capable of.

I just feel like its a thing i should be able to do although in reality a big lean would surfice most of the time. Track day is he way me thinks. Is there any likleyhood of and org trackday in the future?

There are pics of loads of people, about 7 bikes out :P

Shock's all the way up; but I do weigh a lot. My pegs are narrower than the OEM ones by about an inch and sort of go pointy at the end, it stops them digging in when they scrape, but I do have a lot of ground clearance it seems!

stuff

I was doing about 45 when I stacked it, probably about 40 there. About 8k rpm in second.

You mean you have a shock with adjustable ride height??!? ... or are you talkin' about preload

An inch off the pegs will give you a fair bit more lean 8)

Preload :( But I'd love to get one with adjustable height, plus some sort of damping and compression ability... I'd like to go up an inch or so on the back.

Some dude called pete, he was quicker in the bends than most guys who were there. Apparently overtaking is much more fun than seeing how far over you can get; I was overtaking guys round the outside, was muchos fun.

Agree again, it's very important to not put yourself under pressure to do it imo, I made that mistake and came off myself.

I had a go on the 7R the other day and was told that I'm about an inch off, could probably do it with some roundabout laps but I'm sure it'll come after a while anyway, I'd rather just have a year staying on the thing than chasing stuff like that haha.

I like Blue's analogies. Like my suspension guy says about people who study their tyres to try and determine what need changing on the suspension:

"It's a bit like analysing the stains on the sheets rather than concentrating on the act that caused them!"
