Paddock stand and cotton reels/bobbins which will make jobs a bit easier and not scratch my swing arm.

Kev

In my usual style cheap and cheerful I got the biketek one, and some bobbins which the dealership left in :) works well enough, I'm sure there are better made ones out there though, depends how much you are going to use it I guess.

R & G cotton reels, plus cheapo front/rear paddock stand combo from M&P/Busters (search for paddock stands on the site and there are a few links to the cheap stands). Alternatively, there's a centre stand up for grabs in the For Sale section.
ABBA stand including the fitting kit for the RR is coming out at £97ish.
Abba stand without a doubt.....I tried once to get my CBR up on a paddock stand on my own before opting for an abba stand.....what a scary experience that was.

I bought one for the CBR a couple of weeks ago - I was cheeky as asked about a discount, gave 10% off - just mention the CBR forum. This was direct through ABBA.
I used a paddock stand on the SV, and now have the ABBA on the CBR. I personally think the ABBA is sooooo much better - much more stable, and easier for a 1 man operation. I had to drop the forks out on the CBR, and 'cause the ABBA is pivoting on the swingarm pivot point, there is a lot less weight on the front - a jack on the downpipes with a bit of wood, and it was really stable. I took the forks out of the SV using a paddock stand and trolley jack, and wasn't that stable at all.
Admittedly its more expensive than a paddock, but I think they are worth it.
ABBA stand easy enough to use? Nothing to fit to the bike?

You get a fitting kit which has adaptors on the ABBA stand itself - i.e. to fit into the holes of the swingarm pivot - so nothing needs to be added to the bike.
Dead easy to use - slot either side of the stand in, tighten up, lift bike up off sidestand, pull lever on ABBA stand, and hey presto!
Go on the ABBA website - has a video of someone operating the stand.

Lol how the...? It's pretty easy if you get the right technique, were you doing it with bobbins/hooks or cups?
Anyway Kev - thought you asked this question about a month ago, heheh?

I wouldn't buy the Abba stand, having owned both that and an NWS I'd only ever buy an NWS stand as it's better.
If you're having trouble with a paddock stand, you're not doing it right.

+ 1, and you don't have to keep buying fitting kits when you change bike.

I've got an Abba stand...
But now I want a NWS one :(
Definitely the ABBA stand, I bought mine after all but dropping my 1st sv while trying to get it on a paddock stand. I have how ever fitted R&G stand bobbins to my new sv sport as when the bike goes in for service they use a paddock stand (mechanic is assisted by apprentice to use the stand) to work on the bike.

They are great.. though after seeing one lifting the wifes monster I went with the Abba as it was a little bit of a stretch for the NWS to reach. The kit for the monster works great... but it is a pain buying new kits if you get a new bike, not a problem for the NWS.

If you're getting a paddock stand- and there's nothing wrong with 'em, I love my Abba and I've used it a lot but then I'm not normal, for most folks they're gigantic, ridiculous overkill- anyway, if you're getting a paddock stand, get a cheap one.
You can spend a lot- my Harris one was £60 I think- and it'll be lovely but really all it is, is a big bent coathanger, the £15 one I had before the Harris was cheap and nasty, but it worked every bit as well. It fell apart occasionally but I probably used it 20 times as much as most folks.

The beauty of the NWS is it doesn't have to be solely used on the swingarm pivot, any symmetrical hole or allen bolt head is enough.

so am I right in thinking that r&g bobbins on the sv will work with more or less any paddock stand which uses hooks? if not, what should I be looking for in the stand side of things? and how does a front stand attach to the bike if there's no bobbins or owt? just wondering since I've only got a shiiiiiite bike-tek stand which i bought off a mate. its the worst thing ive ever bought but it just about works for lubing & checking the chain

True, I'm getting old though and it was for a differnet bike or something and nothing.......I mean yeah, but no, but yeah, but no, but.....

Hi Paul, You are correct in that if you have bobbins they will fit with any hook/forked rear paddock stand.
how does a front stand attach to the bike if there's no bobbins or owt?
There are two common options; one which slots/cups underneath the forks and the other which slots in underneath the steering stem (both have holes underneath.

I bought the biketek set from m&p/busters, I have R&G swingarm cotton reels that work really well with the hooks I bought from Ghost bikes. The front stand is the fork type above but ideally I'd like something a bit more secure, although maybe I'm just too paranoid of the bike going over.
Busters have an offer on at the moment where you get front and rear stands plus a 'wheel spin' for £39.99. The wheel spin is a pair of rollers in a slim case that you put the wheel on (using the side stand to support the bike) and can rotate the wheel freely. Would imagine this is a handy tool for checking tyres etc without having to use the paddock stands etc.

Right, just belled abba stand and the stand, fitting kit and delivery came to £88.16 including my CBR forum discount.
Well happy with that.
Running up and down the drive to clean and lube the chain will be a thing of the past!!!! Just skint now.
Nice helpful bloke on the other end of the line too! Has anyone from here asked if they would give SV650.orgers a discount too. I think that it would be worth asking, this seems to be of constant interest.

Being a cheapo tight git with too much time on my hands, I reckon I could make one of these ABBA stands.
Would anyone who owns one care to find out the distance between the horizontal pins and edge that rests on the floor? :D
