View Full Version : Out of control vs. safety margins

Feeling reflective I think:

"Different people feel different things and ways, and the same person feels different day by day."

--When did you last make a manoeuvre that made you think "that was a bit close, and if I was driving that car, I'd not think that was very clever".... but you might do exactly the same thing the day before/after and think "yep, no problem there, plenty of room"

Mine was today, but I learned that lesson. Lane 3 to lane 1 leaving a motorway. 300 yards is not enough at that speed with that amount of traffic/gaps.

I suppose its an experience/time/emotion thing. I won't do it again.

NB-I wasn't going particularly quick.

Last week on PM rideout there was an overtake which didn't leave as much of a safety margin as I normally like to. At the time it just felt like "oh, should have gassed it earlier" but thinking back, it probably put the $hits up both cars involved.

In my situation it was caused by hesitation too. If I'd gone for the gap 3 seconds earlier it would've been fine.

At least its been "realised" - in the true sense of the word

A lesson learned, and it didn't hurt. Bargain.

Couple of weeks ago I was overtaking a long line of cars on the A59 between Skipton and Colne. Pulled in to make room for an oncoming car and swung back out to continue overtaking. It was then that...

1: I realised there were double solid white lines on the road - thank god nothing was coming the other way
2: I could hear a siren somewhere
3: I saw something blue flash in my mirrors
4: I think I may have soiled myself

I chucked it into a gap in the traffic and prepared to get bummed by the local plod (I had just seen the Scooby that they use up there). You can probably imagine my relief when an ambuance came sailing past.

I think the last time was when I overcooked a left hander and had the sphinter moment of "I hope nothing's coming the other way cos I aint going to make this turn!"

That was really due to lack of concentration on a road that I don't ride too often.

Had a few in traffic where things have moved where I didn't think they were going to, and I've had the thought "this is going to hurt a lot" and it's only something else moving unexpectedly that's allowed me to escape serious harm. Like on A58, had to twitch it from lane 3 to 1 to 2 again to avoid something. No idea how I missed it, but that was because of filtering like a complete f##knut.

My brain obviously works differently. In situations like that I tend to think "This is going to cost a fair bit to repair!"

To be fair on my bike it'd have to be a very serious accident to cost me more than about 25p to fix back to it's level of pre-crash perfection...

If it was a pointy I'd consider a major accident a cosmetic improvement.

Not sure about safety margins/out of control........going on some threads on here recently I probably take alot more 'risks' than most on here as everyone else appears to be angels of the road.

Recent incident........

A) have a very big rear spin/slide on a wet road that normally has plenty of grip.......that got the heart moving, nearlly had opposite lock on lol.

B) Recent ride out I was coming up behind a car at a decent pace......I had been keeping an eye on the mirrors for the overtake.......I indicate and check my shoulder, nothing there........start moving an woosh a ducati flys by considerably quicker than I was going and we pretty much brushed leathers. He must have been seriously flying and must have seen the position I was in but still opted to go by.

5 weeks ago when I pre rode the PM catherine wheel, we had been riding hot all day, and got too tired coming back the other way, ended up over taking an ford ralley car (rs 200) and completley miss judged my approach to a corner.. i went around it side ways then headed for the dry stone wall on the wrong side of the road..

the saving grace was half way though what I can only describe as the pre crash realisation where you perepare yourself for what will be a lot of pain, I kicked myself out of it, turned the bike in the opposite direction back onto myside fo the road and carried on....

I thought I was going home in an ambulance, but experiance had tought me what to do....

result..

(but I did need to stop and change my undies and swore never to ride that tired like that again)

Mine was when I picked up the bike for the long ride home up the M6. An hour into the journey I'm in the middle lane at 70 passing the inside lane trucks when a "white van man" joined the M6 and into the inside lane, right along side me now I could see his wheels getting closer and closer to my white lines so start to plan my escape, there was'nt one because of faster traffic on my right so I blast the horn and start to move over, but he just keeps coming, lucky for me I noticed the car behind flash his lights at the van so I slam the brakes on and he misses me, or I miss him by a millimeter. The van does the same again driving right into a small gap in the fast lane and is oblivious to what he just did. If it was'nt for the car behind seeing what was unfolding and giving me the room to slam on my brakes it could have been nasty. I let the car behind get along side me and gave him a little wave to let him know I knew what he did. So far (touch wood) thats my only close call in my 5 months riding.
