I need to claim back the tax I paid when I was working April 2007 - Sept 2007 and for July 2008 - Oct 2008. Both times I went back to being a student.

I was reading on the gov tax website, and it got confusing. Do I need to fill in 2 separate forms? do I even need to fill in a form or can I just send my p45? do i need to send payslips? are copies ok?

Understandably its writen in a confusing way, as they would rather not pay you the money, so could someone please help me in plain english!

Cheers

There is companies about that do it all for you.

When I was a student some guy on my course went down this route and they reclaimed £900.....I think the company took 5p for every pound reclaimed.

They do everything and make sure you dont get screwed over.

the Ir are not bad these days if you call them direct. Just have the dates and details to hand so you can be helpfull to them, or if you dont know what they need give them a call and ask.

Nothing but helpfull when i call even if they tell me They dont owe me anything... :-(

I have tried to claim tax back once but got confused and they werent helpfull. Thankfully it hasnt expired yet, was 4 years ago, so i think i will take G's advice and get a company to do it, google gives lots of options, so i will talk to them and see what happens!

from reading, the companys seem to be charging around 10% and I dont fancy letting them take that much for somthink Im sure I can do myself!

I have found this form that I think is the right one to send.

any accountants out there?

would I need to make a different claim for each tax year?
It asks for a tax referance, what is that? Is that the final tax code?

That looks like the one we used to claim back my son's tax he paid while working, after going back to college.

Yes and you cannot claim back tax paid in this tax year (Apr 2008/2009) yet.

The tax reference is the code for your tax office and your employers scheme. It should be on your payslips and on your P.45. It is of the format nnn/xxxx

Note that I am not an accountant or tax person, the information is offere in good faith.
