View Full Version : Cold fingers!

Over the last 2 mornings I've noticed my fingers getting bluer and bluer from my hour's commute to work at 7am. My gloves certainly aren't up to the winter (I suspect they're aimed more for the summer months).

Chatting to a fellow commuter with thick gloves and inners, he says his fingers still get very cold...

What's my best course of action? I don't want to fork out for winter gloves only to find I still have very cold fingers!

P.S. He said one thing he was going to try was some latex gloves (which don't have seams) - could these be the answer?

Would they really have that much affect? I'd imagined most of the cold was from wind chill, so all the cold air being forced onto my fingers...

They do help a lot. That or hand guards to deflect the cold air

Relocate to Arizona. In the dead of winter I sometimes see frost on car windshields.

Latex gloves over your riding gloves cuts out the wind chill...

Absolutely nothing to do with keeping you warm - only keep you dry in the rain (if fitted over your gloves - ayou will have to have small hands to achieve that) And your hands will sweat as they are not breathable - and so be colder again!

OK edit for DD I find that not many gloves will have wind blowing through them. yes to start with they were marginally warmer with the extra latex. But I soon gave up again because not breathable.

Wind chill, not the wind!

So how would an airtight barrier eliminate wind chill? :???:

yep i agree with bibio - heated gloves are the way to go.

Forget heated grips - they are pants. Your palms will be warm but the backs of your hands where u get the wind chill will be freezing.

Quality heated gloves apply the heat right where you need it and right to the ends of your fingers. I've got the ex02 gloves from the link above and love them, but i think northwind got a pair and found them so uncomfortable he sent them back. If you don't like the exo2 gloves there are plenty of other makes such as Gerbing etc.

They might seem expensive, but will probably be less than a set of heated grips and winter gloves, and they WILL keep your hands warm.

My thoughts, based on the experience of last weekend's rideout, though gales, sleet and constant rain like riding into a fire hose, are:

I tried two pairs of gloves, latex gloves underneath, I even bought a couple of those wee heat-pads from the outdoor shop in Fort William, and they were great (for about 30mins....).

Get a pair of decent, WATERPROOF - gloves - I bought a pair of those mad looking HG Pathans, the lobster man gloves on Saturday, and they were great until they got soaked and the wind-chill just battered my hands. They didn't leak, but the waterproof shell-tex is a liner, so the outside got soaked. That said, they were really warm on the run up when they were dry.

I'm seriously looking at a combo of:

Pathan gloves (or equivalent)
Hand Guards to block the worst of the wind-chill
Headed Grips

That, in my opinion, is the only solution to freezing hands.

Heated grips (NOT OXFORD) for your palms, handlebar muffs to keep the windblast off the tops of your hands (else read new leaf's post...), summer gloves to keep up the blood flow (i find winter gloves make my hands cold because with my finst clentched, the blood flow is restricted a bit)

Happy winter riding

...you're gripping too hard.

MR Alipne mann, Did you have muffs on a 650 'S'? I've only ever seen them on naked bikes.

easy on / off able?

I've tried heated grips on two bikes but find them pretty useless, roasting palms and freezing fingers!! HG Pathan (lobster) gloves cured the problem. Nice n toasty this icy morning.

I have HG Pathans and some HG inners.....on my 22mile trip to work today I was toasty the whole way.....this included nearly the whole journey being on the mway. They do take some getting used too, but I find the controls still as easy to use.

Well the new ones with the digital controller are good...but they cut out. At least, they kept switching off on me today in this cold weather, i guess my battery isnt able to keep above 12V in the cold with lights on then putting the brake lights on. New digital controller switches itself off when it detects a battery voltage of under 12V. You may be better off finding an alternative, I might get daytona heated grips or even source some honda ones
