anyone ever had to remove spraypaint off a wall? Some little **** (or as gordon brown would say, poor misguided youth) has spraypainted their initials on the side of my house. The wall is painted a cream colour and the graffiti is black, so i want to try to remove it before repainting to save multiple coats on a big wall. Im thinking acetone might work, but im not sure what spraypaints contain to find the right solvent.

3 coats should probably cover it. Keep on painting over it (preferably in a colour matched paint) and eventually grafitti stops, at least until the next scrote comes along. Reason being, cans of paint for graffiti are reasonably expensive (if you do it a lot and bearing in mind, most scrote's limited financial resources) and it is cheaper for them to mark their territory elsewhere, where the owner can't be bothered to paint over it.

I've seen them buying it down Halfords. :)

Even if they're stealing it, having to steal 1 can is preferable to having to steal 5.

'Should' being the important word. They said they wont do it. They dont some too bothered as apparently 'it's just some kid tagging', its not offensive so they dont really care.

I guess I will just have to paint many coats over it if the acetone doesnt shift it.

take it to your councillor and MP as they should be interest in the spirit of partnership working they should have a protocol in place with the local police that willl help them identifiy 'tags' and help the police collate a database of tags to help in future crimes.
the councillor should be interested in to hear why the council are not going to do that for their members

i reported it and gave a description of the tag, so you never know, there could be a 1,000,000:1 chance they get caught doing it somewhere else.

if its a council house they're legally obliged to remove it, if its private then i think there is something under the social charter that covers it meaning they should still reomve it (they'll paint over it an aproximate match to the wall) which you can paint over. ALso make sure you report it to the police, crime no etc, and report it everytime it happens or even if the scroats are loitering, eventually the cops will move them along, its also another unsolved/ umsolvable crime for their stats and they dont like them.

I think cleaning it yourself with acetone etc may tend to make it run and deface more of the wall, someone on here should have more experience od spraypaint properties.

One of the pubs in town had this problem, so they simply invited all the local sprayers over to come and do it properly. Ended up with some really well done murals instead of scrawled "dave woz ere" etc.

not really an option on the side of my house!

theres a proper designated place nearby where they can spray what they like, which is often covered in actual art which looks good.

i think i had a talentless scrote whos stupid enough to put his initials on there. i suppose he might come back and put his full name and address next time, and make finding him easier!

Or spray after the tag "sucks c*ck" and then lay in wait.

If i had to remove that kind of thing id try pressure washing (hot) first, then graffiti remover.

That said, you take it down immediately itll probably come back....it becomes a game.

Oven cleaner ...the foaming kind...works like charm.
May need to scrub with brush if it is on brick.
Rinse off with water.

Take a picture of the tag and report it to your safer neighborhood branch. They log these kinds of things and link all the incidents so if or when the scrote proresses to vandelising cars as he did in our area there will be a case ready and waiting for them when they hit the court.

I used brake cleaner to remove the spray paint off of my wall..... but go with the repainting over option and do it quickly after each attack.

Acetone will probably work, it tends to dissolve all sorts of carp

But before you bring out the big guns, always sensible to use something a bit more environmentally friendly - so go with bannanaman. Also, with the amount of solvent you might want to use, you could feel a bit giddy after a while  might also take your paint off too

.

or police

as we have posters in in work that were given to us by the police, showing 4-5 "tags" and asking if anyone knows whos they are

tried acetone, didnt work. i looked up some graffiti removers online and they contained N-methyl pyrimidinone and some propellents, but the N-methyl pyrimidinone didnt work either.

i will just stick with the paint over its approach, fingers crossed it was a one off

sounds like it wants a non-polar solvent then (something like hexane or soemthing)
