I have been asked by my boss to investigate cat flaps! yep, that's right, cat flaps!!

At Broadreach we seem to have adopted a cat! My boss wants a cat flap put into a window so that the cat aka Misty can come and go in and out of an office.

I have googled cat flaps but I don't know what im doing!! Can anyone help!?

He wants the flap to go into a window. The pane itself is 12" x 9"

What has my life come to?!!

A friend just bought a cat flap that's designed to be installed in a glass door or window. It does have to be installed by a glazier.

Shame you live so far away I could've done it on the cheap. If you wanted to use the existing glass unit all that needs to be done is the unit cut down, glue cleaned off both pieces of glass, the section of the tunnel for the cat flap cut out of both pieces, bend some bar (the stuff in-between the glass) round the whole, seal the hole, seal the unit, job done. :D

If it's a small bit of glass then just whack a bit of plastic panel in there and cut it out for the cat flap.

Before you go any further, is the window on the ground floor?
Also, if Misty can get in and out will there be anything to stop any Tom coming & going as he pleases?

Get a magnetic locking one to only let in the one cat that you put a magnet on it's collar.

I happen to know far more about cat flaps than is entirely desirable. My other half works for a veterinary body :D

And I replaced ours at the weekend.

What your boss wants is a "Petporte" or similar. They're pricey for a cat flap but if your boss is too busy to use google then I'm guessing (s)he has money to burn.
They're like the magnetic collar ones Stu mentioned - but the problem with the magnetic collars is that (a) you find the cat wandering through the house with rusty nails, teaspoons and god knows what all glued to it's collar; and (b) if they lose the collar, which they do, all the sodding time, cat can't get in.
The petporte thingies have a microchip reader like the one the RSPCA use when they find strays that can read the microchip you have (or should have) inserted into your cat's scruff; can hold the codes for more than one cat (can't remember how many, up to "mad cat lady" numbers at any rate) and it doesn't matter if your cat loses it's collar, it can still get in.

Disadvantages - it remains locked if there's a power cut; and the cat needs to approach the flap level - ie. not climbing up a step (if it was sited in the back door for example) so the reader is perpendicular to the cat and at close range - ie. you might need to build up a little ramp/step to ensure cat arrives at the right angle.

EDIT:
I really should read the question before answering :D Didn't spot that it was an adopted office cat rather than a home one. Looks like you've got an answer already, one point tho, it's a pretty small pane of glass, most flaps seem to be around 8*8 inches including the frame (with the hole being about 7*7) - this is just a guess btw, I'm sure there are smaller cat flaps, tho you might have to stop feeding the cat treats till it slims down to fit in :D

That's gotta be worth it for the comedy value alone :D
