View Full Version : How long would you give a non payer on ebay?
Someone bid on my dakar with 5 seconds remaining on the auction & won.
Hooray.
In the auction I asked for £100 deposit to be paid within 24 hours of the auction end.
I sent an email at 12.39pm the day of the auction end requesting the deposit within the enxt 24 hours.
24 hours of auction end was yesterday at 12.15pm.
After 24 hours he hadn't made contact.
I sent an other email yesterday (around 5pm) asking for him to get in contact as it was over 24 hours since the auction end.
Still no response.
He lives in Germany and has a feedback score of 10.
I'm thinknig that he's just decided not to buy the bike and, as you can't give negative feedback any more, he's just deciding not to make contact.
I'm thinking this as he bid with 5 seconds to spare so he was definitely online when the auction ended and he therefore knew he had won.
Should I give him till 12.15pm today (i.e. 48 hours after auction end) to pay the deposit. Would you give longer than that? Woudl you just say, forget him & offer it to the next higher bidder - Who has emailed me since the auction end to say he's still interested??

If you're feeling generous then I'd give him a few days as not everyone is online 24/7. The guy who bid on my Ducati did the same thing, he bid within the last minute, then claimed his son used his account and that he didn't want the bike. If I could have been arsed I could have looked into forcing him to pay, but life's too short.
If he ends up not wanting the bike, make sure you get your listing fee from him.

Not necessarily, he could have used something like lotsnipe (http://lotsnipe.auctionstealer.com/home.cfm).
However, it's out of order if your instructions were clear. I'd send him a polite message giving him a bit more time, and then relist or offer to the second bidder.
in a Jason Stathem type way *Zee Germanz*
Dont trust em.
If i give terms and no none repsponds by then, a second email, then if still no reply, non paying bidder.

Report it to Ebay and then relist.

I'd offer it to next buyer now - he's had more than enough chances.
Well, I've just tried phoning the bloke in Germany and I'm not getting thru' my phone keeps coming up with Number Not Recognised.
Looking at ebay's rules on Second Chance Offers, if I offer it to the second higheset bidder, I'll get charged for 2 listings, unless the highest bidder says tha he backed out of hte initial auction, and as I can't get hold of him I doubt he'll do that!
Does anyone know the button to press on Ebay to find Fees incurred for an item?
Dirk
Life's too short to faff about with idiots. Offer it to the next highest bidder.

It's rules like that, that make Ebay ridiculous - clearly you only offer a 2nd chance offer when your bidder backs out or causes problems (very unlikely to be something the seller WANTS). So why do they make you pay for the privilege of being shafted?

P.s. I say offer it to the second bidder, OUTSIDE of Ebay.

The 2nd bidder would be a diddy to accept that though - no comeback either way.

What comeback do you mean? What does he have in Ebay? It's not as if using Ebay confers greater rights on the buyer - it's still sold as seen, etc as it's a private sale. I'd just be saying "listen, the top bidder seems to have mysteriously disappeared, if you want it for £X let's agree a deal, cash on collection".

You're buying a bike... there's never any comeback. eBay is just a useful, if expensive way to advertise one.
Dirk, 2nd chance offer will be free from listing fees but you pay the final value fee. you can report the non paying bidder so you don't pay final value fees on the winner in Germany. I would do 2nd chance properly through ebay, you don't want to scare the guy away by coming across as some dodgy shyster (Muffles ;))
Forget the winning bidder he's never going to come over from Germany, just be thankful that he pushed your price up :D

Well, if you aren't paying extra due to the winner taking the p*ss, then I advocate using the Ebay 2nd chance...BUT Ebay's so dodgy as it is, I don't see that doing it outside of Ebay would look bad (especially if you were explaining the situation, that you didn't want to pay fees twice).
I've never had a bad experience on Ebay myself, but that's because I deliberately use Buy-It-Now with the shops that are on Ebay, as it's generally more reliable. I just recognise what a con Ebay is :p

I sold a car on there a while ago and it was won by a non paying scumbag. Who got in touch the next day to say her babysitters boyfriend was bidding and didn't want the car anymore. So I asked them to pay the fees at least and they refused. So I had to pay them. I decided to email someone out of ebay and offer them it for cash (they snapped it up) so it ended up alright in the end.
I decided not to report the non payer though as they come from a particularly rough area and they had my address and I really didn't want my new car getting smashed up.
You lives you learns I suppose. Just offer it to the second highest bidder outside of ebay then you wont get stuck for double fees.
I offered it to hte second highest bidder & he was all set to come round....then his better half told him off.
I may have to relist with the words, "Please only bid if you're in the UK & your ball n'chain doesn't mind"
