O.k so this is a quick rant.

Was in Blackpool yesterday to see the illuminations with my g/f and her 2yr old daughter, went to a chippy and asked for chips with scraps, this is how it went...

'Hi can I get chips with scraps please?'

'We don't do scraps'

'Why not?'

'Health and Safety reasons...'

'Are you kidding me?'

'Nope, sorry..'

Cue me walking out flabbergasted. What has the World come to?

rant over, thanks.

'Health and Safety reasons...'

The answer for everything, when there is no real answer.

:D

I used to get scraps when I was younger , probably almost twenty years ago now mind! I think one day I realised that they are just pretty much pure fat and stopped asking for them.

Pretty ridiculous that they won't give you any if you ask though

The problem is that in this time when obese kids is becomeing front page news someone has obviously seen it fit to not allow people to buy scraps of fatty batter that have been sat in oil frying away for the last 3 hours. lol.

The best scraps are the ones that are crispy and crunch when bitten but you still get that trickle of oil round your mouth as you do......yummy.

the health and safety lot have hit my local chippies. they want them to replace all the salt shakers with ones that have less holes to stop people getting a salt overdose with their chips.

Best chippy Blackpool way is the cottage at Marton. (http://www.whelansfishandchips.co.uk/cottage.htm)

In my South Wallian patois, they're refered to as, "scrumps". I used to have them all the time, till I threw up after eating too many one night and have since not asked for them. :)

So you were speachless about scraps........

I'm a Southerner and the other half is a Northerner. In his efforts to make me fall in love with the Noth and understand their strange ways we went to Whitby Bay for Fish n Chips. After finding the 3rd chippy it became apparent that Northerners do not 'do' gherkins. How can it be a proper chippy if it doesn't stock GHERKINS FFS!

You cant have nowt green with ya fish bait....green things tend to be healthy, we will be having non of that up north. Unless it comes from a green can (see avatar). Good luck to your other half in there efforts to covert you :D

I moved to leeds from suffolk and got the strangest look when I asked for savaloy and chips....

that was me told...

keithd
31-10-08, 04:26 PM
and the northern way of asking for them makes me smile. the future ex mrs keithd is from leeds, we went into a chippie and she said "twice please". i asked if the assistant was a frickin mind reader. twice what? once and a fish. whats that? just random words thrown together

Luckypants

Nah, the correct term is one of each, or two of each etc.

tactcom7
03-11-08, 07:24 PM
I totally agree with the "twice please" method, plus no you can't have gherkins in a chippy!
Now not having gravy, that is a criminal offence. Plus down south you get the strangest looks when asking for a chip butty, and things go from bad to worse when you explain it's just chips between a breadcake!

That's means you must have moved down here from up't north! No one I know in Basingstoke knows what "scraps" are! I only know cos family is from up't north!

I'm always having arguments with folk about what the name is for these, apparently there's loads? Bits and scraps is what I'm used to but I think scraps is more southern?

Tis like different households having different names for the remote control. In my house its called a diggy, in others I've heard it referred to as a plonker and zapper :smt104 Of course there are those with no imagination who just call 'em remotes  :p

It was scraps when I were a kid in Norfolk, also a sausage in batter was known as a "battered chap" (think about it.............)

Can't say i've ever been myself but it always seem packed whenever i'm down that way. Usually end up at the cafe by Alton train station, thats always a goof laugh. Until you get a puncture after 5 mintues and have to wait 5 hours to be towed back the 6 miles to work and end up being late......
