not a fan of the x-factor but hey to each their own. dont need this dribble on telly as a talent would rise to the top anyway.
saw a clip last night, DISCO night, and this young girl tried to pass BLONDIE off as disco:spiderman::spiderman:!!!!!!!! CHEAT CHEAT CHEAT, OR JUST LACK OF KNOWLEDGE. never the less the performance was insulting to dear debbie who should sue forthwith. right rant over.

Foxy

The young girl is Diana Vickers, my friends cousin. Granted Debbie Harry does sing it better but I did quite like Diana's version albeit the set let her down. Blondie was a mix of new wave and disco ;)

Gene genie
02-11-08, 10:54 AM
no way, blondie was never disco.

Foxy
02-11-08, 10:55 AM
Was ;)

in this link it describes her as incorporating, disco pop and reggae ....

http://ginasmusicmemories.blogspot.com/2007/01/punky-ladies-of-80s.html

Heart of Glass was originally recorded in 1975 under the name "Once I Had a Love," and was much slower with a blues/reggae vibe to it. The song was frequently performed on tours, then was re-recorded with the same title in 1978, when the song was made a bit more rock-oriented. When Blondie recorded the album Parallel Lines, disco was big on the music scene, and producer Mike Chapman decided to give the song the disco twist that made the song what it is today, and one of the best-known Blondie recordings.

Gene genie
02-11-08, 11:06 AM
i am not denying disco was 'BIG' on the music scene but by 1978 was on its way out. artists have recorded songs from different eras and different styles and will continue to to pay the rent.
however blondie was not disco. blondie was more electric punk if you like, she had a unique style that set her apart from anyone else.
i grew up in that era and blondie was in nearly all my mates collections, and believe me if they were classed as disco there would defo been a suicide pact in clayton.

Foxy
02-11-08, 11:09 AM
You are quite right of course, however, her best sellers were the disco versions and blondie was also part of my collection. I too grew up in that era

Now I hate to admit this but I watch x factor occasionally.

I think Diana Vickers is serious up and comin talent (it helps shes a little petit blonde) and i hope she wins :-)

Im sorry you felt like that about the song though.

Gene genie
02-11-08, 11:20 AM
oh no no no. i am never right, ask the wife.:p
you've really got me thinking now wether blondie had a disco slant to it. my teen years are now as embarrasing as the rest of my life.:( thanks foxy.:thumright:

foxy could you please ask her to put some shoes on and stop the hand gestures? :D

Foxy
02-11-08, 11:29 AM
LMAO, of course your wife is right . For the wider market they put a disco slant on it albeit she remained known for being Punk Rock.

I hope you are not thinking of joining that suicide pact ;) :D

Saturday night wouldn`t be Saturday without the x factor!!!! is one of the very few programs I watch. The talent this year is better than the last couple of years. Daniel needs to go tho as does Rachel

dizzyblonde
02-11-08, 11:55 AM
Daniel does need to go, but Rachel no. In the right genre, her voice is amazing, but she has to jump the hoops of xfactor. She has a real soul voice.
As for Diana, sorry but if she puts on the false wail at the end of every note anymore i'm going to jump through the TV, A-ha style, and push her over with her own jazz hands. She is a good singer and did an almost convincing Blondie track, but spoilt it with the constant high pitch wail at the end of every note She puts it on, I can see through..seems nobody else can.

Oh and Blondie/Debbie Harry stood on the fringes of the punk era..HTH.....not disco

Sorry Foxy..just my thoughts, no offense on the girl as a person, don't know her from Adam

Hey Db, you are allowed your thoughts and many others will be in agreement with you ;). I personally prefer Laura :o.

Yes in agreement with you about Blondie, however, the disco versions turned out to be some of her best selling hits...

the whole format for the show is quite easily recognisable as drivel, but it's hugely popular and even more successful.

I can see how if you've tuned in for the first time and see some young blond bird with a wierd hair do singing a blondie track, you could well think "What's this? Stars up their ar5e?" but if you've watched it from the start, you'll have been pulled along on 'the journey' from the first time you see the hopefuls come into the auditions and then almost being dropped at several points along the way to the live shows. Each week is a different theme and it's meant to test the flexibility and talent of each of the contestants to see how many different styles they can pull off (and therefore demonstrate their potential revenue capabilities)...

Think JLS could well win it this year - they're a good all round package. Failing that, ruth has massive talent but she's a bit boring to listen to  (I've been forced against my will to watch this btw, and I use it as a bargaining tool for watching stuff I want to watch)

Lol, Im Indoors uses it as a bargaining tool too. I watch Xfactor, hes sat with MP3 player on and using my laptop to fill it up some more! After its finished i have to watch what he wants...which usually means falling asleep in the chair.zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Although watching Hanibal gave me nightmares:-|

Don't think JLS will win, i think it'll be an all female final, so far i an't been wrong whose gone each week

You think our X-factor is bad, i watched the german version, oh oh oh oh my (insert word of choice here), it was ruuuuuuuuuubish. mabey 1 out of the 10 semi finalists could sing, the rest were crud and seems like the judges liked them.

now i know there has been opportunity knocks and new faces etc., but they weren't dragged out over a 4 month period. i dont need to know their family history, if i was interested i'd know it already. :smt017
the cruel pleasure the judges cherish is quite perverse when it comes to evicting one act.:smt102
and most of the acts are very fickle, insecure, nervous and very thin skinned. none of these qualities are required.
yeah ok i watch quite a bit mainly down to the wife, so i have studied it. she will watch it on itv then turn it over to itv 56 then watch it all again, WHY!!!:smt102

as a talent would rise to the top anyway.
.Absolutely disagree with this quite strongly. It's quite amazing to see some people come along to the first auditions and be so nervous that they would never pass a recording contract audition but to see them grow week on week in confidence and ability.

The young girl is Diana Vickers, my friends cousin. Any chance of an introduction  :smt054

foxy could you please ask her to put some shoes on and stop the hand gestures? :DNo way, she had shoes on this week & obviously couldn't walk in them as she teetered off the stage. & I love the hand gestures, they're not as bad as they first look if you really study them

I agree with Stu and its brilliant to watch these people grow in confidence and get better (in some cases :D) week by week. How can anyone think that performances like the following are lacking in talent?

Oh you can't argue with the fact that these folks talents and stage presence grows from week to week, They get a vocal coach and alsorts of things thrown their way to get out the full potential.

I knew Austin would go pretty soon as he jsut hasn't got any stage presence, and although had a good voice just couldn't cut it, or indeed didn't grow like everyone else, he just had no personality that anyone could relate to on stage
Pretty much all of them probably didn't have a clue about what goes on behind the scenes and actually how complicated it is, its not all about the singing, its a whole new world to them. If anything they go home having had a really good experience of it all

A bit harsh there. I think Rachel has a voice that is unique Unfortunately it is only suited to proper soul, not disco or pop. I think her rendition of Nina Simones track last week was perfect for her, and although not keen on her facial expressions in her Mary j Blige track last night, she kicked Austin out of the league well and truely. Austin just didn't have what it took, his voice is too watery and same old same old

Good entertainment. The only thing I didnt like was the sob stories through the first episodes - bit OTT. Otherwise I only watch it cause the kids enjoy it - and Cheryl of course. Can't say Danni does Aussie birds any favours though...

The final...Diana vs Laura. Going to be a tough one i can tell ya.

However, the only reason why Daniel is still in it, is because Louie and Simon keep slating him, therefore the public feel sorry for him! God help us...

As for the original post. I never put Call Me as a disco song at all. Its not down to the person singing to choose the song, but thier mentor, so Cheryls fault there, and shes only 20 somthing so she wouldnt know really ;)

AS for Diana, i thought she done a pretty good rendition of the song. Verna hates her much the same reason as Dizzy, but i think its no worse than the lead singer of the Cranberries who also does the waily bit, as does Kate bush!! Not original, but distinctive enough to make her different.

JLS need throwing out of an upstairs window! They are utter rubbish.

Stu
03-11-08, 06:23 PM
so Cheryls fault there,
Surely that was Cheryl being astute enough to pick a song that best suited Diana that almost passed as being Disco

Very clever I think.
