I hope so. I've got someone who's gonna ring me when they're done so I can put the telly on see him accept the presidency.

And I hope the queues don't cause any problems with polls closing before people have cast their vote. It looks unlikely to affect the outcome, but it would be another blow to democracy.

AFAIK, if you're in the queue when the polls close, the polling station HAS to let you vote.

It'll be nice to hear the end of the speculation, that's for sure.

being able to vote is nice but at the same time sort of worthless nowadays , keep in mind this is only a popularity vote and the electoral college gets the last say no matter how many votes one gets.

I no longer vote because i get to pay more taxes and higher gas prices no matter who wins .:(

You're right i hope he wins too , it's definitely time for a change but at the same time, only time will tell what sort of changes , then again you won't have to deal with those changes as most of us will (here in the US).

Every politician so far always promised you anything you want to hear as long as they get into Office and then turned around and suddenly my Property Taxes soared , Income taxes Soared , our Economy is so messed up it will take a hell of a lot longer than 2 terms for any president to make much of a difference in the modern day nightmare of war and foreign affairs witch in turn will dwindle down to money only to be made by more taxing BLAHH..

I really hope he wins.... but tis' too early too call right now.

IMHO I don't think the economy of the US (or the rest of the free world) can take 4 more years of those **** republicans in the white house.

I disagree with you hang man.....

If you follow recent events it's clear that the US economy does very much affect the economy of all nations in the free world.

Clinton had surpluss budget at the end of his first 4 years....so yes....it can be turned around.
We had billions in surpluss when Clinton left office....now thanks to GWB....we are Trillions in debt.

And yes...after 7 years it's time to bring home all the soldiers in Iraq...a war that's esentially been over for 5+ years.

whatever the system , to not vote at all in my book negates any weight to opinion you may come out with as you aren't prepared to do anything about it just expect others to do it for you.

I would of said it was perhaps just a british view, but having seen the turn out over there, you are in the minority.

That is not a Presidential decision, if they do come home I am sure he will take the credit and then deploy them to his next chosen target.

I assume that there are safeguards in place to prevent W from bringing the Doomsday Clock to midnight between now and January?

Fantastic news. I bet Bill Hicks has stopped spinning in his grave now. Or at least, changed direction of spin!

I can guarantee that things like that will be said in 8 years time about Obama if he lasts the full term!

I for one have a view on it all that I am not willing to discuss due to the context I may post it in! But it's definately not what I wanted to see.

He didn't win by 270, that was what was required to take the win.

was actually 338 by about 7am, he needed 270, looked like he'd pick up a few more undeclared as well.

Time for change, yes but only if it is for the better which I doubt by all the ambiguous statements that have been made. I seriously hope this guy has good personal security due to Americas past with Presidents and racism over the last years. There seems to be factions within America who do not want him as President.
Before I get shot down in flames I think the race card has a lot to do with it,not necessarily coloured for coloured but more to wards the correctness and liberalism that most want to see, not just in America and perhaps, just perhaps this has had more to do with the voting than the actual politics
Who ever gets the job is going to have an uphill struggle to reverse the economic downturn in the world economy. Somebody has called him "Moses"but he has one helluva job in making America "The promised land" again.
All I can say in hope is GOOD LUCK Mr President

A terrific win. I think he has such a difficult job with the trillions of $ debt. Bush has pulled the rug under most of his plans given the bank bail out. I wish him well.

If he is half as good at being a president as he is at the big motivational speeches he will be a bloody good one. Everything he says is positive and patriotic. Keeps talking about change but never explores what kind of change he means or how he proposes to fix the world.

Still have an underlying doubt he can follow though on it though, reminds me of Blair in some ways, all the smiles and chat but no firm direction.

Nah, I don't think the US has been infected by PC culture as we have.

This may get branded racist but to be honest, I don't care. I wonder how many of the black electorate voted for him because of his party or his policies and how many of them voted for him because he's black?

My impression (someone who doesnt follow polictics or current news to closely)

Obama is the most exciting thing for peace and stability around the world today. A statesman and someone the US people can aspire to be like and/or be proud of. I doubt he will let his people down like his predecessor did - who is probably set to go down as the worst leader in the history of the US!

markmoto
05-11-08, 01:55 PM
im not sure he has got what it takes to be the leader of the most powerfull nation in the world but only time will tell he has to right his own history...

My worry is for his safety to be honest he is a braveman...

Needs to bear in mind that the US is not always in control of world events. If someone attacks US interests overseas, Americans will almost certainly insist on action. I'm sure that there will be no shortage of people testing Obama mettle in the coming months.

It was reported here in the Metro that 94% to 4% of Black voters were voting for Obama. (11% of the electorate)
But Obama also had the majority of White voters too by 7%

Edit: sorry I've not answered your question. I've no idea WHY 94% of the Black electorate voted for Obama.

Warthog
05-11-08, 04:04 PM
He's only brown anyway, why does everyone say he is black?! his mum was white. Anyway, interesting about the percentage black voters choosing him. It's got to be race involved to at least a certain degree.

As for me, I am overjoyed he made it in! Black, brown or white, he is 100 times more intelligent and nice than McCain.

...just perhaps this has had more to do with the voting than the actual politics

So, there I was standing in the voting line for almost an hour; six in the morning. (yawn) And I noticed something was different than all the other times I'd been in that same line. THERE WAS FAR MORE TWENTY-SOMETHINGS THAN HAD EVER VOTED BEFORE. THERE WAS FAR MORE AFRO-AMERICANS VOTING THAN EVER BEFORE.

Dickey, you are correct. More people voted this time because there was something new and fresh; not the same old grey-haired wealthy white man (no offense Mr. McCain). This was not a race thing; it was a NEW thing.

FACTS: George W. Bush did not ruin the country; Obama cannot save it.
The unconcionable and destructive partisanship in the Congress has eroded the trust and hope of Americans in their government and in the future of the political system.

If Obama has done anything yet that he said he would do, it is that he has inspired the masses to get off their apathetic @sses and do something to change their lives.
