I haven't smoked for 7 years now, was on about 10-20 a day. The money I saved from not smoking paid for me to get to Oz for a month, had a great time, much better way to spend me cash.

The smoking ban in pubs has actually made me become a smoker again after over 10 years free. All the best social groups now congregate outside the pub instead of mixing inside, so I've joined them.

The worst sort. an ex smoker. 20 years fag free and wish I had never started.

I saw my mother going through hell a few years ago. She had not smoked for over 40 years and they decided she had lung cancer. Removed a 1/3rd of her left lung and the path labs then said it was clear. So a mis diagnosis, thank god

Non- smoker me but I do see what you mean Tigersaw. If I go out for a drink or few with YC I'd probably not see him for most of the night if I didn't venture out into the cold with him occasionally, although admittedly I don't go out every time he wants a puff (ooooh errr), sometimes I prefer to stay indoors and leave him to it.

There's nowt worse than going out with a load of smokers and then suddenly finding there's no one left in the pub cos they've gone out for a communal fag, so might as well go out too. However, and then I might as well be smoking, passively and all that  Thankfully a lot of my mates don't smoke so tis alright really.

Jo and I have dabbled with stopping smoking several times.

We are both now non-smokers. Anyone that ever catches me with a fag in my hand again has free range to punch me in the face.

Jo's mum has just been diagnosed terminally ill with double lung cancer. She's not reached 60.

For those that smoke and have no intention of quitting. I'd suggest you double up so you can make the most of it now. You know, just in case.

I wish you all good health.

Smoker since the age of 12. I'm now 38 and don't have any intention of giving up. I enjoy it and its about the only vice I have these days. Don't drink very often, and as for the other, well, I'm married so, well, nothing doing!!!

Last roll up was 4.5 yrs ago. Im Indoors smokes them like no tomorrow, sounds like a bloody 70 yr old in a morning. I never used to be bothered about other peoples fag smoke, even in the beginning when i stopped, but recently I hate it, it chokes me, and Im Indoors smells gawd awful after hes just had one. He has no intention of stopping. Even when he was supposed to stop for his op, he didn't....horrid.
Make him smoke outside, even in the rain and cold!

Not a habit, but i enjoy it nown again..
Some days i wont, others i will..

College is depressing, and so is work..
Helps to pass the time..

Always have a fag when am out on the bike, and drinking..
Seems to go hand in hand..

Can quit anytime i want, not got a habit, its if i want to or not.
The social aspect is another reason.

I am a non smoker, but Wifey Carol was a roll up smoker. She quit two weeks ago when a nasty cold turned serious and left her unable to breath. It was scary hearing her wheeze and pant and her Doctor gave me permission to beat her if she starts again.

It worries me that she smoked for so long, but she is very strong willed and know the consequences of fags, so there was no way I could have stopped her just by objecting to it. While she was smoking though I asked that she smoked outside in the garden, come rain or shine.

I hate the smell of fag smoke and find that it triggers migraines in me, which is why I am an ex smoker too. Smoked at Uni for a couple of months, but not a lot.

I gave up 6.5 years ago, from smoking 20 bensons a day. Saved the money and bought a Porsche 944 s2 (always wanted one)...........don't know where the money goes now though, just disappears. The biggest thing I noticed was that my legs stopped aching for no reason, well that is until I started running.

HATE the smell of the Filthy things.......

Old man died of lung cancer at 59, when I was only 21 a slow wasting lingering undignified death, for big strong guy who served on a destroyer out of Gibralter in WW2......a bloody waste.

know 2 guys who've recently had to have BOTH legs amputated due to blood circulation problems caused by smokin' bacca's.... and a friend of the wife's was told the same would happen to her unless she stopped as she was heading the same way (40 year old)

NO THANK YOU.

non-smoker.

Never have smoked and never will. Its a nasty habit. Why puff away on something that is going to eventually kill you  Went to the Body Exhibition at the 02 arena which showed a smoker (white) vs non-smokers lung. The smokers lung was a lovely shade of black...

Id much rather spend my money on better things and keep my health intact ta very much :-D None of my friends smoke so I dont have the problem of being left behind in the pub while they congregate outside

Odd, I thought smokers were supposed to be over-represented amongst motorcyclists, but 27% smoking is almost exactly what you'd expect in the general population.

Not that many really.
Based on your numbers above 1.35% of the entire population are bikers who also smoke, 3.65% being bikers who do not.
If we take the population as 60million then it's 3million bikers. 810,000 of whom smoke, 2,190,000 who do not. 16,200,000 smokers overall the UK
15,390,000 of whom do not ride a motorcycle. :)

I quit a few years back. still have the odd fag if I'm out with mates who still indulge but normally regret it the next day. all of my house mates and my Mrs smoke though so it's really hard sometimes not to start again - plus I have the joy of my house stinking like an ash tray :-( Ah well, they have to put up with my welder sat in the dining room and various bike parts round the lounge :p

Depends how many you smoke, no?

If average 20 a day = £5.50/pkg

= 2 X 365 X 5.50 = £4,015.

Or, if you prefer, enough for a new SV.

Puts it in perspective...

What you can't calculate - and sorry to sound preachy - is the cost to your health.

Smoked since I was 12, then had my accident, thought to myself that I hadn't had one for 2 weeks while in hospital, so didn't need one & haven't smoked since. That was in January this year.
Dont get me wrong - there are times when I could still murder one, but resist.

Smoker here too, used to go to the lengths of figuring out how to get the cigarette around the chin guard of my flight helmet (not easy to do but with some practice......)

The worst is while in a bar (pub)with friends , drinking and smoking go hand in hand but now they banned smoking in any public building so i no longer go to bars and thinking of giving smoking up too.
