How do you measure a ring finger without her knowing, bear in mind she is a light sleeper, and how do you measure it?

missyburd
08-11-08, 06:32 PM
does she already wear a ring on that finger? If she ever takes it off find out where she puts it and measure that?

Get one of her best mates to find out when they go shopping. That's what I did with my ex. Girls are always up for a bit of devious romance.

go to the jewellers and choose a ring and then pick a lady who looks the same size as your girlfriend and play at trying it on lots of ladies in the shop, they love trying wedding rings on, very romantic.
you'll probably get the wrong size but at least you would've enjoyed yourself.

get some of those measuring rings that jewellers use.....a good jewellers will send u a set of them (if they think ur buying from them)..get her rat arsed so she passes out...and see which one fits?

is this for the left hand?? good luck if it is!! :-)

remember that some women have different size ring fingers on each hand, they are not nessesarily the same size

Good luck Dave :D

tell her you are getting some hand made gloves for her as its winter ... but you need to take all the sizes of each finger and palm/hand etc.etc ...

if she says i dont want them ... say but darling your poor wee hand in this weather.. and besides someone on the forum makes them and they are giving a really good discount...

Could you just not buy the ring and then get it altered afterwards?

bought my wife a replacement wedding band a few years back. gave her the money, she went to the jewellers by herself, she chose it and bought it.

I had my wedding ring refashioned into a charm for my ex-wife's charm bracelet. It's in the shape of a small clenched fist with the middle finger extended.

Apparently she wasn't very happy when she discovered what the gift had been made from.

OOOh, someone planning on popping the question!!!!

Get her friend involved, my friend has just done this, took the other friend shopping, went to jewelers (how do you spell it?), to get supposed ring for self and said to friend, go on see what size you are, I'm sure you're smaller than me! She fell for it.
Sorted!

does she not wear a ring on the same finger on her other hand or is that too obvious? Presumably that finger must be pretty much the same size

Aye but not as permanent. Not a very good symbol of a relationship should it break or just stop working. A ring however is solid, secure - as in shouldn't be taken off - and will therefore mean considerably more to the lady in question. You don't hear of women getting emotionally attached to kitchenware now do you? Or am I treading on dodgy territory here

Aye it is, me and Becks have been together for over eight years now. We haven't really discussed, or even had it brought up, before about getting married. It will also act as an insurance policy for her following recent events down here, she is not overall happy with my return to work but she is fully supportive.

A set of vernier calipers (warmed to 30 degrees so the cold metal doesn`t wake her up) and measure with a light squeeze over the knuckle of that finger that should be good enough . You can then lock it in place and take it to a Jewellers and offer it up to the required ring :D

Drew used the help of my mum with her getting me to try on her rings and see if any fitted me as mum was going on that i never had any jewellery on but a necklace. It was using my right hand as well which turned out to by a ring size up to my left hand. (if that helps)

To answer Miss YC- i only take my engagement ring off to shower, and when i do take it off i can feel it not there and start panicing so have to keep it in my sight lol (it is also as it is a family ring and think i may get in trobule if i lost it)

Aye well that's understandable, its just I was always under the impression engagement/wedding rings were a sort of permanent fixture, a sort of symbolistic bond between you and your partner, maybe I'm just old-fashioned lol.

Obviously in some professions this isn't always possible for practical reasons and a lot of men can't stand jewelery of any sort.

Your not old fashioned Miss YC.

Becks would take her ring off when at work, she is an A&E Nurse and constantly putting on rubber gloves and stuff. I cannot wear jewelry at work on most duties, but thats not to say I won't carry it with me.

The advice I was given by my sister and my Mum (for some reason they both want me hitched asap :takeabow:) was to hold my palm up against my girlfriend's when cudling or whatever other romantic reason I can come up with and compare the thickness of our fingers and then get the ring tried on my finger that looked the closest in size.. if that makes any sense...;)

Just buy a one which you think is pretty close Dave, my better half has tiny fingers so even the shop didnt quite trust me when I said what size she was. In the end I bought it 2 sizes too big and when she got it, we took it to the Jewellers and we got the right size.

Hmm ok then, just most folks I know keep theirs on. Obviously people do stuff differently nowadays.

I wear mine all the time I can, but it's just not possible 100% of the time. Well, not if I'm being reasonable, anyway - I've got a tungsten carbide ring so just about the hardest material (although that doesn't seem to apply to the finish), it applies even more to people with gold or other softer materials.
If I wore mine all the time it'd be beaten up now, from the times I work on the bike - there are other situations too though.

Anyway - wasn't being argumentative, just pointing out it's not that feasible ;)

Obviously unlikely, but some materials (e.g. mine - tungsten carbide) can't be resized. Probably won't apply though, it's only a few materials (maybe only tungsten carbide and titanium?, not sure).

Get a bag of Hula Hoops Dave and ask her to see how many she can get on her fingers, then see which ones fit! Obviously don't eat them off her fingers as this would defeat the object entirely! ;)

Get yourself down to the offy and buy loads of different can of beers. Open then and enjoy and whilst in a state of eternal joy try placing the different ring pulls on her finger. She might even be satisfied with the ring pull, saving you a few bob and you get rat a**** on the beer so its a clear win win scenario.

Rings are very easy to resize, so don't worry too hard if it's not quite right.

Over time, fingers change size anyway, so it probably won't be the first time it will get resized.

The silly sod :smt008 took me out for a meal in the restaurant we went to on our first date, we go out for meals every now and again but this one was a real surprise to me. He isn't very good at these things, trust me, but afterwards we went down for a walk along the beach. We used to spend a lot of time walking on the beach when we first met, he told me he loved me (I started to worry for a bit then), he got down on one knee, and showed me the most beautiful ring in the world... YES, YES, YES, what else could a girl say, I will say he took his blooming time in asking.

I was asked to keep you informed as he said there had been a lot of interest on here; unfortunately Dave was paged and dispatched at 3am :makelurve: this morning. Godspeed my love, make sure you come home safely. :salut:
