View Full Version : Should a tyre crack after 4500 miles?
I had a set of Roadattacks fitted at Easter, lovely tyre, but the front has started to crack in the tread. It's not severe but the rest of the tyre has good tread all over, and I only commute 40 miles a day on A roads so it's not had a hard life. The rear is fine (although squaring off) and I regularly check and adjust the pressures (34psi front and rear).
Is this the end of the tyre or shouldI find someone to moan about it to
Cheers.

A tyre can crack quite early in it's life if it's run at a very low pressure, or if it's left near flat for a while, (although this usually only causes cracking where it's distorted, ie; on the floor), assuming you've done neither of these, take it back to where you got it and point it out, if your concerns are realistic, (not to suggest you're wrong - simply that I can't see the tyre), the supplier should help you out.

36/42 is probably a better set up although I run 38/42 for some reason.

You got a pic? Im wondering how extreme because little cracks in the tread groves shouldnt be a worry.
As to pressures. Id run 32 front and 36 back for the sv :)

Realistically 2psi either way isn't going to cause instant tyre meltdown.

Road Attacks did that to me, but a lot earlier. Just keep an eye on the tread in the centre, it deteriorated (sp?) very quickly on my set that I had. Nonetheless (sp?) they were a great tyre.
Cheers fellas. I'll keep an eye over the next week or two but I'll also let the guy know where I got them. The cracks aren't vast but is seems that most of the centre tread pattern has them. I remember my BT020's did the same and the feel from the front end went awol quite quickly. I don't fancy that happening again, especially in this weather :(
When I do come to change, is there a good dual compound tyre to hold off the squaring of the rear?

Pr2 ftw

noticed my front is starting to crack in the treads.2000 miles
Just been reading back threads in the tyres section and it seems that several people have had this issue. Would I be best contacting the fitter or going direct to Conti?

Go to Conti, they may give you a reasonable answer. I think it was Grinch who e-mailed them before, not sure though. Pr2 ftw = Pilot Road 2 - for the win :)

The michelin pilot road 2 is an excellent tyre if you can afford them, if not get yerself to an off-road school, put some absolutely sh1te tyres on the SV and let the fun begin
Yeah thats what I was trying to say Chris, thanks mate :)

Yeah I think I will do that actually, but who needs a school? After you fall off a bit you soon learn. I am actually looking for a set of dual-sport tyres really though.

Yeah all seriousness, tis the best way to go, after reading Baph's review on the PR2's they seem the better option. I did have some Pilot Sports (yeah the cheapy deal ones), oh how nice and suprising they were, they only lasted a few miles, but still not a bad tyre for the wet, the best I had, and thats rating them above the road attacks, but to be fair they were on a different bike :)
Yep the Conti website states that they should be run 36/42 on the SV, which surprised me.
Though its how I run them and it seems fine.

The Avon Storms seem to be getting as good miles as any dual compound because of the reactive footprint thingy it has. I went for them and so far so good have a read in the Tyres section mate.
Yep, Avon's plan to be my next tyre.

My avons have worn on the shoulders on the front, like Luckypants said his had :(
I'll be conacting Conti real soon then as I checked today and every tread valley on the front is cracked. The rear is exactly the same age and looks fine. I'll let you know how I get on.
Continental UK said that I should get a new tyre fitted and they will look over the old one. They will then measure the remaining tread depth and refund the percentage difference i.e. 70% used = 30% discount off new tyre. They didn't sound concerned on the phone (maybe they have had to sort out quite a few people already?) a bit worrying really if it has happened that much :smt107
I'm getting the new tyre fitted on Friday so hopefully I'll get a result sometime next week.
