Well do you still ride and SV650? Are you lingering here even though you have moved on to a different steed?

I think if there was a survey of % of people who no longer have an SV, it would be quite interesting and I reckon easily 20% of the people on here (regular posters only) would no longer own an SV

Just for you Job. lets see.

Nope. :)

I'll be splitting the cases to get to the 2nd gear i knackered when I went out riding with you. And while I'm in there, I have to repalce the selector forks, the final drive chaft and the inner clutch basket. Incredible how much damage one gear tooth can do! :)

THEN I'll get around to the shock. I think it just needs relocation away from the 'zorst.

Then I'll sell it and buy an R6 :)

Before its said... I ride a girls bike, and I like riding a girls bike, and I ride the girls bike hard. It keeps me happy, goes well, is cheap, sounds nice, and has character.
Its 7 years now man (sorry girl) and bike from new. In fact I liked it so much I bought another, and now with 66k on the clock. As you can see if you look right.
Now, back to the riding of my girls bike everyday except weekends...

If you say bad things about it, I'll just ignore it, cus I'm like that... la, la, la... not listening.

I would have had it 9 years On Dedember 2nd :) It still makes me smile everyday. I still think its possibly the best LONDON commuter bike there is. Its quick, its narrow, and witht he right adtitions loud as well.

I still hanker after a larger bike that doesnt give me cramp on long journeys...hmmm, tiger :)

still have two actually, one served me very well for just over a couple of years and 153,000 miles, the other has served as spares for a load of people over the years and will never be a whole bike again.

Foot note:- my original is being build up by Michelle, so should be back on the road next spring sometime after laying about for 4 years, shes got the engine in and running already (sweet 4k lump).

Got mine new in 2002 and still loving it!

No it's not the biggest or the badest or the newest....

But ..
It's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than it is to ride a fast bike slow.
And I generally frail the little SV for all she's worth....and she likes it.

I could afford something newer, bigger, etc. but I tend to like all my bikes better after I've had them for 10,000 miles or so.
After that the riding gets easier...less thinking and more reacting as both the bike and I seem to know what to expect of each other.

I've still got it, and I think I'll always have it. Sometimes I get annoyed with it and want to trade it in for something else. Then it uses its V-twin charms against me and I fall back in love with it.

I'm still going to get an SV1000 though, but as a second bike when me and maria get a place of our own

Viney, i think you are right about the SV being the best london bike. Its not such an extreme sporty riding position that your body aches after 2 minutes of filtering, and with the added fairing it makes going down the north circ at 60mph comfortable.

Now that is BS mate, everything????

Now haven ridden and owned both I think I am probably in a good position to back that claim up. Yes EVERYTHING!!

Brakes, radially mounted with far more stopping power.
Suspension- Far better unit’s front and rear, showa all round full adjustable with USD forks.
Engine- Well power is 105 at the rear wheels tested, and a top speed of a genuine data logged 162 MPH. Personal taste may cause people to say they prefer the V-twin. Fair enough I am dealing in facts for this argument.
Handling- a world of difference, the Kwak is far far more capable than all but the very best riders out there. Certainly none on this site including me could push it to its limits.

The only thing that is subjective is the looks really. I am not slagging off the SV, I had one loved it and would have one again as a second bike. I am simply stating facts that the Kwak is better than the SV.

Cheapr to run? or buy?

Buy yes agree with you 100% .

To run well that is arguable. I have had better MPG on the Kwak than the SV at times. can get almost 200 miles if i ride sensibly on the Kwak.

Consumables are more expensive like tyres , and yes it will go through them quicker. However servicing costs are almost identical.

Insurance that is a bit of a dodgy argument, as it depends on your circumstances person to person. but i found getting the Kwak it only went up £100 a year fully comp. not bad for a jump of 5 insurance groups.

As for town ridng, i have never found the Kwak a drama, no need to leave 1st. but that said it gets very hot very quickly in town.

I think the SV will probably be lighter... though the fact that it feels heavier probably doesnt make this a point of contension.

As for tyre's, well tbh your tyres could be vertually the same price. There is nothing stopping you going for Pilot road 2's or the like. Its a common misconception that sports bikes need sports rubber. I have no drama with grip or feel from the Pilot road 2's I use.

I just think that people change for personal preference and when you find a bike that is your preference it becomes the dogs danglies. With regard to the SV,been there, done that, got the T-shirt. I have never bought the same bike twice but since I have had the ST it ticks more boxes for me than the SV. Admittedly it looks like a curvey but definately better for long distance, comfort stakes and weather protection.I don't ride any faster or slower than when I had the SV,just a more relaxed style of riding. What would I replace it with, nothing at the moment as I have still to find something that ticks more boxes for me,thats why I'm riding a seven year old bike.

Hence this post...
True but I was not comparing it to other SS600's I am saying it IS 100% better than the SV at EVERYTHING.

I'll keep my SV till it goes bang (and even then, I'll probably just chuck a new engine in it), as it has reached that point where it is worth more to me than its market value. If I get a new work bike at some point (GS800F is a contender), the SV will be kept, even if it's only relegated to hack status.

From my SV I got around 45MPG I can get nearer 50 on the Kwak , and low 40’s if its used a bit faster.

The SV is heavier I think the kwak is 167KG dry.

Tyres, err hello the kwak has a 180 profile not a 160 so even the same brand tyres are going to cost more. I don’t use sports rubber on it. I prefer sports touring type on it.

Sound, the SV does sound quite good but I do now prefer the sond of my IL4 screaming through its open Scorpion can at 12K + and the induction roar is far far better sounding than the SV’s

DD, LOL bottom of its class maybe now but when it came out in 07 was at the top. It won Fast bikes 600 bike of the year title and came quite high up in the overall bike of the year. And I am not comparing it to its class in this argument. I am comparing it to the SV, which ever way you cut it, it wipes the floor with the SV, and yes I feel qualified to say that having owned both.

Comfort, the Kwak for me is far more comfy, practicality mmmm maybe the pillion isn’t as good ill give you that.

Hehe, this is beginning to sound like Greek's Falco thread. :)

I have to say also after owning both and SV and a ZX6R the Ninja wins by miles in my very own humble opinion. Better handling, better brakes, better only about a grand more expensive if you shop about, insurance is not too much more, same MPG depending on your right hand but just as uncomfortable.

Hope that helps.

Besides, the Kwak comes in Green which makes it better by default!

I nor anyone here has said the Kwak or any bike is best for everything in the world ever. What i have actually said is its better than the SV at everything. And unless you have ridden both you cant really comment on the comparison.

People are thinking i have said the Kwak is the best bike in the world. Its not by a long shot probably, however, and i am getting bored of stating this now, haven ridden and owned both a K3 SV and a P7F ZX6R Kwak i can 100% catagoricly say the kwak IS a better bike my a long mile.

You're right I haven't ridden your bike, have ridden a 2001 and a 2005, and I'd still say the SV, especially the naked beats it hands down in town. Nice motor for an IL4. So really, it's not better than the SV at everything... it's just better than the SV for the things you do with it :-P
IMO no such thing as better bikes, just ones that are fit for purpose. Given choice (the money!) I'd have lots of bikes for all the different uses. SV is a cheap way to do all the uses quite well without really excelling in any of them.

And here we go.......teh Hornet still wins in my book. :smt019

There you go, an all-round bike that you find suits you. That's my point... one mans trash another mans treasure and all that.

Have a Yellow Curvy, owned it now for 2 1/2 years, have owned 30 bikes over the last 25 years, and I have no plans to replace it with anything, it does everything I wish of it, reliably and economically....

Most importantly it makes me smile everytime I ride it.......;)

Ah yes but if i was to put a top box on mine LOL ;)

but are you man enough to do that?

I am

I'm well 'ard

Actually, nieo - I am going to agree with you that your bike is probably better in all area's than the SV. I know my dad's GSXR is faster and better handling than my bike, thats just a matter of fact. What I forget is how light it is and how decent the riding position is on it. Most people thing GSXR = bum up, head down. To be honest, whilst its more sporty than my SV, its not tooo bad. I reckon I could live with my dads GSXR in london (I doubt he could live with me living with it in london though). The throttle isn't as heavy, the clutch is way lighter, the bike is lighter (I once got home, jumped off my SV after a 100 mile ride and sat on my dads gixxer, off the sidestand...oo this feels light, has he drained all the fluids? a quick swish side to side and nope, full tank o' petrol, damn, light bike!) and the brakes better.

The only reason I won't have a GSXR or something like that is the insurance I'd have to pay. Fuel economy is about the same between his gsxr and my SV (my sv slightly better....but I rarely use full throttle, my dad likes to use alot of full throttle!) and my dad has had good milage out of his tyres. We do oil changes just as frequently (every 4500 miles) and chain and sprockets probably last about the same. Tax is also the same I think.

I really dont get people getting 45mpg out of the SV650... Even thrashing it around North Yorkshire on the outing with the PM I managed over 40MPG! We certainly wernt hanging about and 3rd gear was the gear of choice for the vast majority of it.

I know the ZXR has the bigger tyre... makes only like £5 difference if I remember right from my last change. :) What do you use Neio? Tyre's that is? Pilot Road 2's are the way forward. Got 8K out of mine Te he. :-D

I use BT-015's on my 3rd set in a year now:(. that said the next set will be sport touring ones like storms.

the 0-15's are sh*t hot in the dry and warm.

I get 45 mpg in town (about 10 miles per litre), but thats stop-start riding for you. On far longer runs the SV is more economical - but thats true for any bike or indeed engine when you keep the revs up and use smaller amounts of throttle to adjust your speed.

I often wonder how much fuel I would save if i stopped blipping on down changes

Just got rid, but depending on what I end up doing after my PhD, I might get another to commute on - they are just so cheap to run, I love em.

Worst I got out of an SV rear was 1680 miles, three rears and two fronts this summer, not super cheap.

Yes but you use full on sports rubber. The sport touring sort last loads longer.

see: +7500 miles from MEZ6 rear for me, +8000 miles from MEZ6 front. Probably both a thousand more than that, I am being conservative with my estimates

so what your saying is......you ride like a big girl in the wet, and you want some confidence inspiring rubber;)

Now please can someone tell me what department the SV is better in please.

Granted I probably ride on totally different type of roads than most here....but here goes.

I primarily ride on mountain roads with tight bends...and my SVS eats ss600's for lunch. Any (and all) of them....
They have very little torque or power in the lower rpm's and none can come even close to keeping up with my SV in the mountains.

Of course it might just be me....:riding:
